i just read the last couple posts. i haven't read the whole thread. but i'd like to chime in...

for me, no word, in itself is offensive. the way you use words can be offensive. but there is no particular word, that is bad, all the time.

and alot of people say, "well, would jesus use curse words?????????????"

my reply is this: yes, he would. When jesus got mad at groups of people, he didn't just go in a corner and pray for them. He called some people some pretty serious names.

but to me, there is no such thing as a "bad word". Even the "bad words" can be used in good ways. But i will say that most of the "bad words" that i've heard in rap/hip-hop aren't used in good ways.

Yes there is, if you use words with the intent of offending someone, then that is a bad word. Jesus didn't use vulgar language, he used the truth to convict people. He has the right to convict, but not us.

Just chucking in my tuppence here....

To all the defensive ppl on both sides of this argument, erm, isn't it just possible that you appreciate different things in music and you have different personal tastes. And that's a good thing, imo, otherwise the world, music or otherwise, would be boring and lacking variety. So why not just agree to disagree, to use a cliche.

Colossians 2:16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Check out 1 Corinthians 10 as well, good stuff: 23“Everything is permissible”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is constructive. ... 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

As for me, personally I don't listen to a lot of rap, and freely admit to lacking a wide knowledge of rap and hip-hop culture. I dont hate rap or think it is evil, it just doesn't contain the elements that I personally prioritise in the music I listen to, so I choose not to pursue an interest in it. It really doesn't matter to me what any of you choose to listen to, and I don't reckon you'd like everything in my music collection. Big deal. I like it. You like your music, does the whole world have to like the same to validate your taste?

im am setting up a townhall meeting to discuss about how right winger conservatives use coded racism to attack rap music.
dont hate, participate!

What did I say that was racist? I protest the misogyny, the objectification of women, the drugs, immorality, violence, etc.

I see both sides so here is my take, first I MUST address this, and as I haven't read all the posts forgive me if I repeat someone else.

but when you make up words like "shizzle" and "skeet" and stuff like that to rhyme, you have no talent. Making up words so you can rhyme is idiotic and sad.

e'er----ever, found in many classical poems
o'er----over also found in many classical poems
ere----before found in many classical poems

and the list goes on. This is not new, just new words.

As far as rap goes, I don't like the overbearing beat of it. It gets to my stomach, don't know why, but the pounding just doesn't sit well with me. That and most the time I hear it, it is blaring out there with the bass all the way up, can't stand that. I am more of a mellow personality so that does just bug me.
I can't understand many of the lyrics and this bothers me because I don't know what I am listening to. I can't tell if it is something I want to be in my head or not because I don't understand it.

I understand why some people like it as well. I am sure that if you understand the lyrics, then you can relate to them, much like people relate to country, (in all honesty, most pop I have heard lately is too sex oriented so I don't listen to that). I also understand that some people may enjoy the heavy bass and really loud drum beats. Especially if they like to dance (personally I have two left feet).

My main concern would be the content. If you are listening to some stuff that is about negative things, then you are putting negative content into your mind and if the lyrics get "stuck in your head" (this happens to me and I end up singing a song all day), then you are repeating that negative influence. BUT... this can occur with any style of music, so this is a warning that everyone should take into account.

I am a musician and played flute for 5 years in the Army Band (contrary to popular belief, we do play more than just marches LoL). Well, one thing I learned is that music has a magic to it, if you will allow the elaborate word choice. We can play a piece with NO lyrics and have the whole audience smiling, laughing, angry, frustrated, any emotion we choose to portray in the music. Music is just like that. I think why rap gets a bad rap is that if that is ALL you listen to, then the tone of the music can make a mark on your moods. The music can affect your mood. I don't know if there is any scientific studies on it, but it is true. So just be careful as to your level of saturation into any ONE style and mood of music.

This is the smartest post in the whole thread, in my opinion. Everyone has different musical tastes, so let's let people listen to the music they want to, without bashing them or their musical preferences. I don't like country music, but do I go around saying stuff like "country sucks don't listen to it"? Of course not. Everyone's different, and musical preference doesn't make someone better or smarter than anyone else.

But lyrically, I have nothing against hip hop. Hip hop is rap's goody goody brother. Rap is the one I hate lyrically and rhymically and just musically all around.
You have no idea what you're saying. Do you even know the difference between hip-hop and rap?
