Why do you hate Rap???

Depends on the kind of rap. Because of the rise of rap in the mainstream; most rap these days sounds like pop music - catchy samples with a geezer with some decent flow. In the past rap the rap was more instument based and the flow exceptional and poignant; not to mention a quick wit and irony in the music and lyrics that could only be found in this genre.

The interested should look into artists such as Jurassic 5, Pharcyde, Roots, Ugly Duckling, De La soul and the old skool artists from sugar hill records - the sugar hill gang and Grandmaster Flash. Note should be taken of rap's musical complexity and propensity for interest before judgement is passed based on the more commercial forms of the product.

All rap is not hip-hop. ICP raps, they're definitely not hip-hop. Fred Durst tried to rap, definitely not hip-hop. And yeah, rap sorta comes under the hip-hop umbrella. It's part of the culture, of the whole that's hip-hop. Graffitti artists are hip-hop; b-boys are hip-hop; and of course, DJing is hip-hop. Hope that's clear.

ICP rap iswn't rap but rap-core so was fred durst's music. Big difference between rap and rapcore.

I don't hate rap, but I don't listen to much of it for two reasons:

1. Endless thumps get boring quickly. Gotta have guitar. Gotta have chorus and harmony.

2. I can't identify with the lyrics. I'm not black. Gangsta: I didn't spend my youth dealing crack or shooting cops. What I'll call "Modern": I don't drive a Lexus, not a huge fan of Hennessey, and bling-bling is tacky.

and that's not just my favorite songs, they are the only ones I can tolerate.

I don't hate rap, but I don't recognize mainstream rap as an honorable art form, either. The type of rap that I'm talking about is the kind where rhymes is stretched just to fit some awkward form. I don't think of rap as poetry because most rap that I hear doesn't express life like Shakespeare or Donne have; instead I think of rap as cop-out poetry because it doesn't express any particularly deep thought about important life themes.

Well me personally... I just don't like rap, just isn't my cup of tea if you know what I mean. I don't like all the talking about gettin' drunk, high, having sex... all that stuff. And don't get all up in my face because "not all rap has that content" because yea I already know that, it still just isn't my thing. The repetative beats just keep going... and going... and going... and...... going. The lyrics are sometimes really degrading, and ever watch the videos for some of this mainstream stuff? Jeez... they almost always take place in either some exotic club, or some "crib" in the "hood." Totally stereotypical if you ask me, and generalizing... for some people at my school, it's like... that's what they listen to because that's what they "would listen to." does that make sense at all?

I'm a heavy metal fan personally, rock on.

I definitely agree with Sava lol. My main reason for not listening to it is very shallow and immature, but it is simply this - It promote illiteracy!! lol. But yeah, I don't agree with most of the messages in their songs, usually revolving around pu-tang and bling bling and shoot-um-up and stuff like that.

What do you think would happen to today's teens (10 through 25 I suppose) if all of their negative music was removed from them (including their personal collections in their houses, computers, radio, etc.), and the only thing they could listen to was positive music (not necessarily all about Jesus and stuff, but things that don't promote or talk about violence being cool and whatnot)? Just an interesting question .

last time I heard Shakesspeare i didnt recall YEAH being yelled over and over again by a man with no artistic talent and a mouth full of ye olde "bling"
Rap to me has no artistic appeal or value. My own opinion.

I am a musician and played flute for 5 years in the Army Band (contrary to popular belief, we do play more than just marches LoL). Well, one thing I learned is that music has a magic to it, if you will allow the elaborate word choice. We can play a piece with NO lyrics and have the whole audience smiling, laughing, angry, frustrated, any emotion we choose to portray in the music. Music is just like that. I think why rap gets a bad rap is that if that is ALL you listen to, then the tone of the music can make a mark on your moods. The music can affect your mood. I don't know if there is any scientific studies on it, but it is true. So just be careful as to your level of saturation into any ONE style and mood of music.[/QUOTE]
