Well, when it's your time, it's your time...

I woke up to a message this morning from a young woman I have been dating for a little while, which said she's happy and very excited that we're now officially a couple. It feels weird and very alien to me after so many years being happy, content and fulfilled as a single man to type this out, but when I think about how similar we are (both love to travel, both fiercely independent, neither of us needy - or in a rush) it does make sense.

It's bittersweet in a way, because there was a woman last year who I built something with (that I thought had a chance) that will now never come to fruition. Unfortunately, her fear, constant blowing hot and cold, and lack of empathy towards me won out in the end. But, this woman now is a natural fit, and balances out my oftentimes stoic nature with empathy, kindness and tolerance (because I can be a bit of a miserable git sometimes :tearsofjoy:)

Sad though it is to close the door on something, you absolutely have to when the bet has no chance of coming off. I couldn't imagine gambling away this bond now to stake it on mission impossible (I'm not stupid.) I was deluding myself for such a long time, that it's a relief to finally end the chapter and move on. (I know what you're thinking, but no - absolutely no infidelities have been committed on my part.)

We went to a Thai festival yesterday - she's Thai, so it goes without saying I learned a lot about all of these different foods I would have never thought to try, and the chemistry was undeniable.

Of course, I'm no spring chicken, I'm nearly 34 and understand what comes next - a lot of challenges to overcome and some compromises to be made, but she's already given me the green light to continue travelling alone and to take care of my busy schedule first and foremost, so we're off to a strong start.

She's been single for almost as long as me, so we've both got a lot of getting used to. That said, we've been brutally honest with each other since day one, so I think we know how to ease each other in.

You're the first people to find out. Not even my own friends or family know yet - haha, they're going to think I'm joking.

Time always seems to do the opposite of what you want it to do. When you want it to slow down, it goes faster than a speeding bullet. When you want it to go quickly, it is as slow as a turtle.

I was going thru some old magazines I have. 90s to about 2009. . It’s interesting looking at the ads. 90s ads were selling the Internet. Paraphrase, but ‘check out our line store.’ Ones for video games were still selling the idea you could bring the arcade into your house.

I was surprised 2009 ads they were still using ‘he’ pronouns when speaking generically (“Go to his store.” )I was also surprised as recent as 2009 how much they ‘Christmas’ instead of holidays. (“It’ll be out around Christmas.”)

One thing I’ve been fascinated recently is how big smoking used to be, how everyone & their brother used to smoke. I don’t have a magazines that go that far back tho.

Ads used to really sell sex too. Almost every ad tried to sell you on that. That’s something you don’t see as much today. The mainstream finally pushed back on it, rightfully so I think, but now I think it’s opposite problem, pendulum swung too far back the opposite way.

Since I’m on the topic of how times have changed, I was shopping to birthday cards the other day & noticed almost every card is animal-related, especially dogs & cats. Aren’t there more good thing in the world than animals? I also noticed how many dog playgrounds & pet hospitals they’re building.

Time always seems to do the opposite of what you want it to do. When you want it to slow down, it goes faster than a speeding bullet. When you want it to go quickly, it is as slow as a turtle.
Really tough for us time-anxiety people.

You're at a similar age to me, so you're well aware of this. But I work with a lot of young lads (born after 2000) and they can NOT wrap their heads around it when I tell them that the internet used to be this uncool, obscure thing that only geeks got involved with. Amazing really, when you consider that there's only a decade between me and these guys, yet the differences in our respective adolescent days are a century apart.

My mother used to give me a pocketful of coins before I went out with my mates so that I could call her from a phonebox if I had a problem or needed picking up, my colleagues find this impossible to believe.

I have actually found chatroom threads from the late 80s early 90s - and I must say, it makes for fascinating reading. The posts read much more like today's and not like the early 00s slang that came l'8r m8. Btw, wuu2? Plz tb.
