So what was that clear purpose again? Don't get hung with requiment or lack there of, the question is about purpose not requirement. I also do not mean to isolate Sabbath law but am using the word cover to the broader context of Sabbath.
The purpose is listed in Exodus chapter 20, 31, 35 and also in Deuteronomy chapter 5 and elsewhere. What purpose are you looking for that you feel was left out?

The purpose is certainly NOT for all mankind to keep the sabbath day as a ‘legalistic prescription’ for salvation as some teach. (Galatians 1:6-9)

What you've presented is not that clear to me where the purpose is. Are you able to reduce it to a few lines to state what the purpose of the sabbath is? What about creation? Does the 7th day have the same purpose as the 4th commandment, if not are you able to state a purpose that in is inclusive of both?

God’s purpose in regards to rest (Genesis 2:2-3) is now revealed and fulfilled in its final sense through our ‘sabbatismos’ rest found only in Christ. (Hebrews 4:9-10)

Hebrews 4:9 - So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. (NASB) Notice that the Greek word "sabbatismos" here is used no where else in the Bible!

W. E. Vine, Greek Dictionary points out:

Sabbath rest (4520) (sabbatismos from sabbatízo = keep the Sabbath) literally means a keeping of a sabbath or a keeping of days of rest. It is used in this passage not in the literal sense (meaning to keep a specific day, the "Sabbath" day) but to describe a period of rest for God’s people which is modeled after and is a fulfillment of the traditional Sabbath.

SABBATISMOS a Sabbath-keeping, is used in Heb. 4:9, R.V., "a Sabbath rest," A.V. marg., "a keeping of a Sabbath" (akin to sabbatizoµ, to keep the Sabbath, used, e.g., in Ex. 16:30, not in the N.T.); here the Sabbath-keeping is the perpetual Sabbath rest to be enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, in contrast to the weekly Sabbath under the Law.

Because this Sabbath rest is the rest of God Himself, its full fruition is yet future, though believers now enter into it. In whatever way they enter into divine “rest,” that which they enjoy is involved in an indissoluble relation with God. (Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words)

If I understand you the purpose of the Sabbath (in its full sense) can be found through the Hebrews 4:9 use of sabbatismos which is a "perpetual Sabbath rest to be enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, in contrast to the weekly Sabbath under the Law."

Here you are using the word Sabbath as you define the purpose of the Sabbath which would make it circular. So then what is the purpose of this "perpetual Sabbath rest" as revealed by the word sabbatismos?

I'm not interrupt this great sharing here but just to add something in regards to Hebrews 4..this is the real meaning of the Sabbath rest and how it should be understood in the light given to the apostle in the NT...

What about the purpose? What purpose of the Sabbath does Hebrews 4 reveal? (try not to use the word "Sabbath" in your answer)

Purpose is to enter into God's"rest" (the rest He had on the 7th day in creation..Heb 4:10

Sabbath rest is a "spiritual" rest Not a "physical" rest just as a "spiritual beings or Spirit (God) in contrast to physical beings or human..

In Hebrews 4, shows the Sabbath rest (God's rest) as a complete rest which fulfilled ONLY when the work is fully complete ie 7th day Sabbath (Rest) comes when everything were complete in creation week.. Genesis 1

Scripture does call the work in Christ in us a "new creation" (2 Cor 5, Gal 6) so it is paralleled back to creation itself to which the 7th day is a part of. 2 Cor 5:17 says "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

if we can establish the purpose of Sabbath in creation it should translate into the purpose of Sabbath in the new creation. That of course warrants more study

interestingly the "new creation" reference in Gal 6:15 says:
"Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation"

one can't help but compare this with 1 Cor 7:19 which is very similar

1 Cor 7:19
"Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts."

so between Galatians and Corinthians "what counts" is the new creation/keeping God's commands and it would seem "God’s commands" and the "new creation" are used synonymously here. I'll let the scripture speak for itself regarding what this means.

I am not sure @Danthemailman if you realize this, but you added a word that is not in this scripture, which changes the meaning of this very important verse. You quote the meaning of rest here correctly, but than for some reason you introduce a whole new word that is not in this verse, which changes the meaning of this scripture.

This is the scripture:

Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

This is what you did to the scripture

Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a Sabbath Perpetual rest for the people of God.

Do you see how inserting this word that is not in the scripture changes the meaning? We are warned not to do this. Proverbs 30:5-6

The Sabbath is the seventh day according to God. Exodus 20:10. God defines the meanings for us through scriptures- not us. God said the Sabbath is His holy day. Exodus 20:8-11, Isaiah 58:13 and the only day God commanded us to keep holy Exodus 20:9 and the only day that is blessed by God and sanctified Genesis 2:1-3

Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.

Rest here is sabbatismos which literally means keeping of the Sabbath. So this verse says there remains a keeping of the Sabbath for the people of God.

σαββατισμὸς (sabbatismos)
Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 4520: A keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest.

If you read the next verse we don’t just receive the spiritual rest of Christ we have to do something thats why the word ALSO is there.

Hebrews 4:10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

We must cease from our works (this is a direct reference to the 4th commandment Exodus 20:8-11). The Sabbath is the only day we are to cease working all other days are working days according to God. Exodus 20:9. We are to cease from our works just like God did on the seventh day. Genesis 2:1-3. Keeping the Sabbath is the door to the Spiritual rest in Christ.

I hope this helps.

God bless

I changed nothing and as I already explained in post #64, SABBATISMOS a Sabbath-keeping, is used in Heb.

Hebrews 4:10 says the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. That person has entered in God’s rest through Jesus "rests from his own work" (in contrast of trying to keep the Law) as God ceased or rested from His works in the seventh day of Creation. God's ultimate, true rest did not come through Joshua or Moses, but through Jesus Christ. Joshua led Israel into the promised land, which was merely the earthly rest which was but a shadow of what was involved in the heavenly rest. The rest in Christ that God offers is spiritual and is superior to that which Joshua obtained. Israel's earthly rest was filled with conflict and attacks from their enemies and the daily cycle of work. The "sabbatismos" rest enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, in contrast to the weekly Sabbath under the Law, is found only in Christ and not Law keeping.

Although for centuries the Jews had found their physical rest in a day, the New Covenant takes the focus off the shadows of the Old Testament signs and rituals and reveals their spiritual substance -- the fulfillment/reality—in the person of Jesus Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17) Christians find complete Sabbath "sabbatismos" rest in Christ's finished work on the cross. The New Testament Sabbath rest is entered into by ceasing from one’s "works" of trying to earn salvation though keeping the Law. Paul explains that the Jewish holy days, including the weekly Sabbath, were merely a “shadow” which pointed to Christ; therefore, Christians should not feel obligated to observe them once the “reality” has come (Colossians 2.16-17). Because Jesus and the New Testament writers never reiterate the Sabbath command as they do the moral principles contained in the other 9 commandments, Christians are not obligated to observe a literal weekly Sabbath day. Period.

The Greek word sabbatismos occurs only once in the Bible: "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest [sabbatismos] for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.

God defined the Sabbath and it is always on the seventh day from Creation Genesis 2:1-3 and will be continue for eternity for His saints Isaiah 66:23 just like God promised…
I’m not sure why you are getting so bent out of shape over the word “perpetual.” Here you are saying that keeping the weekly sabbath day is perpetual through your misinterpretation of Isaiah 66:23. Why would the believers “sabbatismos” rest in Christ (Hebrews 4:9) not be perpetual?

Where is the word "perpetual" in Hebrews 4:9 You keep inserting it but its not there.

The Sabbath is not "everyday" according to God. Exodus 20:10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God which is the argument you seem to be trying to make by adding a word that is clearly not in the scripture. Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

None of your commentary can be supported by the scriptures. I prefer to go by the pure Word of God so we are not deceived.

The Greek word "sabbatismos" here is used no where else in the Bible! You can’t seem to grasp the significance.
Yes, the definition of sabbatismos is the keeping of the Sabbath. Which does not mean every day is the Sabbath. What is the Sabbath? Exodus 20:8-11. "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy" Exodus 20:8 The Sabbath is a commandment of God that we are to keep. Your argument appears not to be with me but the Author and Creator of the Sabbath and of all things.

Prior to the new covenant we see Jesus and the apostles keeping the 4th commandment under the law. Jesus was born under the law. (Galatians 4:4) Yet nowhere in the New Testament do we see the apostle Paul commanding the body of Christ to keep the weekly sabbath day under the law and to the contrary we find Colossians 2:16-17.

Jesus did not walk on this Earth as our example so we can do the opposite of what He taught. I'm sorry you believe this but it's not what the scriptures state. 1 Peter 2:21-25 Jesus commissioned the apostles to follow His teaching. Jesus taught us the commandments of God and to keep them. Paul in Colossians 2 is not contradicting Jesus or himself when He tells us that the Sabbath remains for the people of God.

I'm happy to go through Colossians 2:16-17 but you keep omitting its context by not quoting Colossians 2:14

Colossians 2:14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

The Ten Commandments is God-written (finger of God), the law of Moses is handwritten so right there you have your proof this is not talking about any of God's Ten Commandments.

But we can keep going.
having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us

This is most certainly not referring to any of the Ten Commandments.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and His commandments are not grievous. So there appears to be a contradiction to Col 2:14 and the Ten Commandments. Since there are no contradictions in scripture, it must be referring to another law. The law of Moses was placed outside the ark of the covenant, written by Moses in a book as a witness against you, Deuteronomy 31:24 God's law is not grievous 1 John 5:3. The law of Moses was added because of sin Galatians 3:19, the law of God points out sin, Romans 7:7, Romans 3:20. The law of Moses contained curses Deuteronomy 29:20-21, Galatians 3:10 and made nothing perfect Hebrews 7:19. The law of God is perfect Psalms 19:7 and brings blessings and peace Proverbs 29:18, Psalms 119:165 the law of Moses in the book of ordinances ended with Jesus being our Perfect sacrifice. Ephesians 2:15, Col 2:14-16, Hebrews 8:13 not God's law which is ETERNAL and UNCHANGING Matthew 5:17-19

It is certain Colossians 2:14-16 is not referring to the Ten Commandments it is referring to the law of ordinances, not the COMMANDMENTS of God. Is there a sabbath(s) in the law of ordinances? Yes, and fits Colossians 2:16 to a tee as is about food and drink and holy days called sabbath(s) in scripture which has nothing to do with the commandments of God that was before sin Genesis 2:1-3 and is a memorial to God's Creation "Remember" the Sabbath day to keep holy Exodus 20:8. The sabbath(s) feast days (animal and food offerings) is what ended, that is in the ordinances in the law of Moses, that was contrary to us and ended with Jesus our Sacrifice -See Hebrews 10 which is what Colossians 2:14-16 is referring to.

Further consideration Colossians 2:14-16 is not referring the seventh day Sabbath

Colossians 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. The Sabbath is not a shadow of anything, it points back to Creation "Remember" the Sabbath day to keep Holy and does not point to Christ on the cross.

Further proof, the Sabbath day continues to be God's chosen day of worship for eternity: Isaiah 66:23 just like God promised Exodus 31:1

I’m not sure why you are getting so bent out of shape over the word “perpetual.” Here you are saying that keeping the weekly sabbath day is perpetual through your misinterpretation of Isaiah 66:23.
It's context. Hebrews 4:9 does not use the word "perpetual" There is a Sabbath-keeping for the people of God which reinforces the 4th commandment, you are changing "Sabbath" to mean "perpetual rest" which is not what Hebrews 4:9 says or means. Isaiah 66:23 tells us from one Sabbath to another we will worship the Lord Isaiah 66:23 which reconciles with all the scriptures on the Sabbath commandment, the holy day of the Lord thy God that has or never will change. Exodus 20:10, Isaiah 58:13

Jesus did not walk on this Earth as our example so we can do the opposite of what He taught. I'm sorry you believe this but it's not what the scriptures state. 1 Peter 2:21-25 Jesus commission the apostles to follow His teaching.

So there is 100% proof Colossians 2:14-16 is not referring to the Ten Commandments it is referring to the law of ordinances, not the COMMANDMENTS of God.

One more proof Colossians 2:14-16 is not referring the seventh day Sabbath

Colossians 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. The Sabbath is not a shadow of anything, it points back to Creation "Remember" the Sabbath day to keep Holy and does not point to Christ on the cross.

Further proof, the Sabbath day continues to be God's chosen day of worship for eternity: Isaiah 66:23 just like God promised Exodus 31:1
We have been over this before and the heart of your error is that you continue to mix the old and new covenants together through scripture twisting which culminates in a hybrid gospel of “salvation by grace plus law, faith plus works.” :(

The word “perpetual” does not need to be specifically spelled out in Hebrews 4:9 in order to figure out that “sabbatismos” rest for believers in Christ under the new covenant is perpetual. In contrast with keeping the weekly sabbath day under the old covenant of law for Israel. Why did you deliberately leave out “from new moon to new moon” in Isaiah 66:23?

Hebrews 8:10 and Jeremiah 31:33, the error appears not to be with me.

Grace is not a license to sin as we sin in Romans 6.

Jesus quotes from the Ten Commandments because breaking any of them is still a sin Romans 7:7, Romans 3:20, 1 John 3:4 and in danger of judgement James 2:10-12, Revelation 11:19, Matthew 5:21 Hebrews 10:26-30 without repentance and turning from sin. Jesus quotes we are to keep the least of the commandments Matthew 5:19, which means all of them. Right now we have time to repent and turn from sin and walk in Christ. Jesus provides us the Holy Spirit so we can keep the commandments. John 14:15-18. And the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey. Acts 2:38 Acts 5:32. We are saved by grace since we all have sinned as it is God's gift, but living in grace does not mean living in sin.

Yes it does if it changes the meaning, which is something you seem to be doing.

I have no issue with the new moon on the New Earth and it changes not that we will be worshipping the Lord from one Sabbath to another, thus saith the Lord. Isaiah 66:23
