  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Things can get rough when reporters offend sources and readers...

The scandals surrounding the life and work of the former, now disgraced, cardinal Theodore McCarrick rumbled in the background of Roman Catholic life for decades — starting in the early 1980s. Insiders whispered, but nothing was done.

What precisely went on in those New Jersey shore houses that were bought and sold for the use of McCarrick, and others? There were some documents, linked to lawsuits that were handled behind closed doors. There were letters sent to Rome, as well as private telephone calls. There were rumors that reached reporters, but nothing made it into print.

That went on for decades, while McCarrick climbed the ecclesiastical ladder in the power cities of the upper Atlantic coast. Check out this detailed timeline at the NorthJersey.com website.

What Pillar published about other 'news sources' failures to investigate McCarrick because they didn't want to get on the bad side of him is really coming to roost. There was another famous religious commentator that knew a considerable amount of things about McCarrick but held back for years. He was finally so disgusted by McCarrick that he left the Catholic Church and became Orthodox. After doing nothing to protect us all from McCarrick. It's another instance of spinelessness. Insiders whispered.

McCarrick has had an oversized effect on the appointment of bishops, on the appointment of cardinals, on the appointment of a particular pope, on seminary formation, on the text of the New American Bible, on Catholic colleges and universities, on Vatican China policy, and who knows what else. And insiders whispered.

The Pillar is hard hitting. They are punching way above their weight. They don't cover things up. They go deep. And they create deep waves. They really do need people to subscribe so they can maintain independence and depth for their tiny staff. So I would ask anyone who can to spend $8 per month to subscribe to The Pillar. There is no more insightful factual reportage at the moment within Catholic circles. If they have to close their doors it will be a huge huge loss. Support them.

Agreed, I really hope that can all be undone somehow.

Yup.

There has been so much damage done. We have disciples of McCarrick all over the hierarchy, and their disciples all over the place. It will take a lot of uprooting the weeds and that will require a lot of hard work by people with spines.
