Yes. The use of IBM-card voting speeded up the vote counting, which is what people were clamoring for. Punching out the chad on the card wasn't always tidy, and recounting them by hand was a nightmare, however.I almost forgot about the hanging Chads. I think that's what it was called.
But for most elections, the results were known in short order and people liked that. We've gotten used to being annoyed if by midnight the result isn't ready to be reported.
Now, though, we are preparing to go back to a version of what was our system before there even were the famous phone-booth style voting machines. Or worse. Election day will be a nightmare this year so far as tabulations are concerned, and we haven't even mentioned that the laws concerning how the mail-in ballots are counted differs from state to state.
