  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Where did y'all learn Elvish? I've picked up a few words here and there from some sites, but nothing that truly teaches is.
Ardalambion is one of the best sites I have found thus far.

They have the Hail Mary and some others as well... Anyone know what the heck Sub Tuum Praesidium is?

Umm... *Blushes* The version of the prayer I found and learned is not, apparently, how Tolkien himself translated it. I will take Tolkien's version over anyone else's, and so I have edited that post to the true translation.

Interesting. Tolkien's looks more succinct. Thank you!

Not to offend, but of course Tolkien's would sound better, because he created the language and thus was the first master of it. Who knows? Some of the stuff floating around online these days claiming to be Elven is just plain junk.

Oh, do I ever know that! Don't even get me started on the "Elvish" created by the Gray Company. I looked at it once, and even had memorized the numbers through 12 at one point, but after seeing actual Elvish again I realized how awful it is. Of course all the LoTR badfic writers adore it and sprinkle it into their fics wherever they can, but I try to stamp it out wherever I find it. Forgive me for digressing but I cannot stand badfics, especially when they claim to be based on a series I know and love.

Oy ve, I know exactly what you mean. I did the same exact thing, and I thought, "cool, now I know some Elven." And then a friend of mine who does Elvish linguistics showed me how wrong I was by going through and totally correcting the, as we call it, "Grelven" dictionary. Now, I have no problem with people speaking it, as long as they acknowledge that it is not true Elven. Master Ravion, for example, knows some Grelven, and I accept that, but if he were to claim that it was actual Tolkien Elvish, I would have to dispute it.
Grelven is strange. It is a mixture of Quenya, Sindarin, and some made-up stuff with a little bit of homemade/Quenya/Sindarin grammar in it. Some of it is good, other stuff, bad. I could go on for hours about it, and maybe I will sometime, but not now, since I doubt anyone here wants to hear me rant. Even if it is about Elven languages.

*Laughs* I'll let you rant about Grelven if you let me rant about badfics loosely based on Lord of the Rings :p

My fellow Elven speakers, linguistics, and interested parties.
I have completed another poem in Elven, but have decided to have some fun with it.
If you all want, I shall post the Elven version of the poem here, in this forum. The first one to translate it into English and PM me a correct translation shall win. Just a little competition amongst friends. I know that not all of you are expert translators, but give it a shot. I am not rich in CF blessings, but I will give the winner 25 CF blessings. I apologize that it is not alot, but perhaps I will increase it.
What say all of you? Would you like to give it a shot?
