We know that memory, in general, is unreliable. There's plenty of well-controlled experimental data to support this. People unwittingly embellish, exaggerate, and merge memories; they can even be made to create personal memories that never happened. Every time you recall a memory it is reconstructed from fragments, and the way you reconstruct it can change it. Even so-called 'flashbulb' or 'snapshot' memories, vivid images of some experience, can change with recall."I know that I know nothing"

And none of them provide any RATIONAL reason why we should discount flawed memories as an explanation.

So you claim that the thousands who say that New Zealand is to the northeast of Australia should convince me? How about the hundreds of millions who say it's always been to the SOUTH east? Why are you asking me to ignore them?
Don't ask me to accept an argument from popularity when the vast majority of people claim you are wrong.
