CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess. I don't like tattoos much myself, positively symbolic or not. But that's an aesthetic opinion, not because of what they symbolise.

The OP was concerned with a particular tattoo that she now dislikes strongly; some posters have suggested she get it changed, in order to blunt the negative image that she feels about it; some ppl would go a stage further, generally speaking, and like the idea of becoming tattooed in order to have a pragmatic faith tool in conversation which certainly works.

Don't you think that as some Maori become more Westernized, they might receive less tattoos? while in turn Western people seem to get more and more tattoos?

Not my experience, rather the Maori seem to becoming more tattooed of recent times, perhaps as their culture finds a renascence in NZ and internationally.
What is changing is that the ritual nature of tattoo is becoming much less predominant, and that tattoo is being promulgated as more of a secular art form for both Maori and Pakeha.
The other difference I see is that the traditional Ta Moko is as much a scarification as it is a tattoo:
The marks in general are spirals drawn with great nicety and even elegance. One side corresponds with the other. The marks on the body resemble foliage in old chased ornaments, convolutions of filigree work, but in these they have such a luxury of forms that of a hundred which at first appeared exactly the same no two were formed alike on close examination.
Whereas the modern form is probably significantly less of an ordeal to obtain.

Maybe then it's the case that Western and tribal Maori tattoo traditions are gradually merging?
And maybe Maori who might have wanted to integrate with Western society which formerly did not get tattoos as widely, feel less of a pressure not to get tattooed?
Re. the ordeal aspect which you mentioned: I think the sheer prevalence of tattoos among Western women (59% - 70% or more of parlor clients now in North America are female) proves in some way just how tough women can be, or otherwise just how strongly motivated so many women are to do it. As if it has become a natural thing to do; in a sense, not unlike for Maori traditionally to do. (If this makes any sense?)

Maori used to be cannibals but they stopped the practice thanks to the influence of the gospel.
If you were a missionary back in the day there was a real chance you would be killed, but they wouldnt eat you cos missionaries didnt taste very nice. They would go for the most tattooed person, having the most mana.

This is why you see lots of tattooed ppl in prison. Its a thing with crims to have tattoos. Why should a christian want to emulate a criminal?
I dont know. Because of my short sightedness, all tatts end up looking the same.
I mean, when i went into prison i wasnt about to ask each and every inmate about their tattoos. Im sure if given the oppoirtunity they would have boasted about them to me.
It is usually done because someone died. Whther it was by their own hands or someone elses. Or tragically.
If you read the Bible God told the israelites NOT to practice this custom.
Ironically those that were in the holocaust and survived were given prison number tattoos. It is to their shame they still have them.

And it's also a demographically very significant thing to do among, for example, 18 year olds as a coming of age thing, the military (I saw a quote from a platoon chief who said around 90% or 95% of his platoon received ink), military wives (on the forum a military guy said his wife has been urged by other military wives to have it done - and it's often in patriotic, family or faith themes), etc. I think the rite of passage thing is demographically very significant, whatever other significance receivers might also put on it.

Re. names being covered, yes it happens! and among new Christians some ingenious solutions are sometimes achieved; e.g., a Christian woman with the name of an ex-bf tattooed (e.g., 'Bill') might opt to have 'Bill' changed by a good artist (like your daughter) to something like 'Bible', etc.
The tattoo artist profession used to be heavily dominated by men, but this is really being rectified and more and more women are demonstrating their professional inking skills. In a sense this is quite logical because I saw someplace that now 59%-70% or more of parlor clients in North America are female.
So does your daughter have any siblings who are also into rings and ink, etc.?

I actually had a lady come up to me before bible study started to day to ask me about my tattoos. She had heard me talking about them before. I use them to strike up conversations that could lead to witnessing opportunities. It was really cool that she appreciated that and didn't just judge me for the ink...

My wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite Bible verse and mine also; and I'm sure other conversations have also arisen as a result of her willingness to have it done.
