Ironic - my praying has been especially good lately. But my husband is upset and think I am in idolatry because of having icons and candles.

I understand the feeling! It took a long time for some family members to realize I wasn't participating in idolatry after I became Orthodox. Come to think of it, some of my extended family still believes that. My parents have come around though (not Orthodox but more understanding of our perspective) and my siblings understand to some extent, which was the most important thing. I'm thankful that I became Orthodox before meeting my husband so that I can share Orthodoxy with him. Praying for you and your husband!

I've also experienced the phenomena as I became Catholic.
I live at home with my parents (who are non denominational and pentacostal) and as I bought a statue of our Lady of Grace and created a home altar to honor and pray to her they got really suspicious.

I put flowers on it and everything and combined with the fact that I admited that I pray to her and honor her (But of course NOT worship her) they accused me of idolatry as well.
To their defence they didn't know anything about our Marian devotions and adding this to their way of faith (prayer is for God only) makes them ignorant and nothing else.

As time has passed they've come to realize that I worship only Christ, but I ask for interseccion from Theotokos.
They're still not to found of my Marian shrine, but at least they consider me to be christian as much as they are.

Their acceptance is really important to me as I'd hate to be condemned by my folks.

You are in my prayers Kylissa and I pray to the most Holy virgin that she'll come to your assistance and show them the faith and help them grow in understanding of our customs and traditions.

Yes, we certainly want our families to accept us. It's not easy otherwise ...

Matt, I'm going to have to look for that. The lamps might be very helpful. I'm not remembering a mention, unless it's in the fashioning of the temple implements ... I know there are lamp stands. And candles for the Churches in the lamp stands in Revelation.
