Long time coming..Go... to Microsoft and Download SP3, This Download is for XP only...Not Vista or XP 64 bit. Better, safer surfing, and a better boot up. you will notice only some small changes, but well worth it.
Tell all of your friends and Contacts, Spread the Good News Around, Thanks. Veteran Tech. 38 years.
Its about time Microsoft..Cheers Mrghost........

Continuous Reboots Plague Windows XP SP3 Users

From PC Magazine site:
What are doing this weekend? How about watching your PC continually reboot? That's what some aggravated Windows XP users have been doing Friday after installing the XP service pack 3 (SP3).

The problem appears to primarily affect AMD-based computers, though there are also some cases in which Intel-based machines will also run into trouble, Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote in a recent post.

Microsoft was scheduled to release the XP SP3 download on April 29, but a "compatibility issue" delayed it until May 7. Mention of the reboot problem first popped up on the Microsoft forums on April 23, prompting some to speculate that the poster's problem was due to an outdated version of SP3, but users who installed the final version soon reported the same issue.

"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se," Johansson wrote. "The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."

To Stop Default Booting on Crashes.

Go to the Control panel Click on System, Then the Advanced box to new Box, Then Start up and Recovery Settings/ Uncheck The Last Box, lower boxes in the lower section.
1.
2
3 Automatic Restart on System failure ( uncheck )

If your are Stuck, Hold the F8 key while windows starts, to go into safe mode and make your adjustments, and system changes.

I have installed this on several computers Whit great success, But I don’t Have a AMD CPU.
Both of my Computers are running, There may be a small % of failure on some Systems, So check the Web to see If It Works for You.

The Article Mentioned is ...http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2285971,00.asp

All of the People I know, And Most are Tech's, Have not Seen this reported crash So far, I am a Computer Builder From 1985. Always Proceed With Caution, Always back-up and Create a System Restore point Before making any system change or upgrade.

My Computer is running Faster than ever.

Lets see, If U get into your car today what are the Odds you will be Hurt in a Auto Accident ?

If you Fly in a Plane What are the Chances Your Flight Will Crash ?

If you eat out at a resterant, What are the Chances You will Contract Ecoli ?

I don't use the Microsoft Auto-update feature,I dont like it Butting in when I am in the middle of Something, Or Downloading Stuff You are un Aware of.

If you use the Auto-update feature, and that is the default that most Computers are set at. Then You will most likely get XP/SP3 anyway, Unless MS. Drops it.

This install will change all your Java and Active X settings. It make the net so tight, I could cause You a problem in Some surfing platforms or area's.
You will have to go to the Controll panel and reset your preferences, The major; Idea of SP3 is tight control of the net, to prevent hackers and the spread of Virus based stuff.
So after you install, double check all of your internet preferences in the control settings; As per your Taste.

This is a really tight program to hamper Hackers, mabey too tight for your own needs.

But my computer is Safer and faster now, And I am happy with the install. Mrghost Veteran Tech.

Hunh....what about Firefox? I haven't used IE in ages, but I do use XP. the only beef I have is the slow shutdown. (I have SP2)

(ergh..I do need to dump my fluff in a flash drive, defrag and THEN get SP3.)

That shouldn't be necessary. It doesn't give you a new operating system, it just updates the existing one. It's always wise to back-up data and defrag, but you shouldn't have to worry too much about a crash dump with getting SP3.

Also, this may provide security fixes to Internet Explorer, but it doesn't affect Firefox at all. This is an update to the operating system which, in your case, is Windows XP. Firefox and IE are browsers, so other than whatever fixes Microsoft might include for IE, it shouldn't affect what browser you use at all.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding your post?

you understood perfectly....I've always thought the browsers were intregated with the OS...apparently it does not.

*whew* I'm just concerned with only my OS.

Well it kind of does. IE is integrated with Windows, and when Microsoft releases fixes for Windows, they usually include fixes for IE too. So that part is right.

You're also right to be using Firefox, which is separate and apart from Microsoft and Windows. So good on you for that!

heh..been using FF for 3.5 years and I love it. they do security patches with a much simpler upgrades. never have the need to go into Microsoft's site to download one patch after another (a real PITA) plus, the patches/fixes clutter up my add/remove box and I dunno what to do with them. I'm wondering that if I use SP3...do I still need them?

That's a good question. I don't know the answer. They take up tons of space so if they can be uninstalled, I'll probably do the same. Maybe someone will tell us. ;)

You could use ccleaner
That will disable you from uninstaling the updates- but it will get rid of a lot of wasted space.
It will also allow you to remove all those cookies and everything else you want it to.
