  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just unistalled SP3... made XP too slow to boot & starting a few programs. Went back to Microsoft and installed the latest SP2 updates... running much better now.

Anyone else on an Intel Core 2 Duo type setup experience anything similar? I know AMD systems were having troubles with endless reboot cycling. Think I'll wait till they get this one figured out before reinstalling SP3. :(

thanks for heads up....haven't installed the SP3 yet.

even with SP2, I have slow boot up and slower shutdown, and can't imagine having SP3 making it worse. (I have Intel Pentium 3)

I have a very powerful and fast machine. Sp3 has made mine Quicker. I also use FF. If you are running at P3 level you may want to stay away from this, Remember the larger the Scuirity systems grow then so does the machines need for Ram.

Allot of people have not tuned their Computer for there personal taste. The boot time is slowed up by reading Ports and devices that you may never use anymore.
Things to turn off in the Bios Cmos: warning Danger Get help
1. If you are not using a old 9 pin serial mouse or the serial port for anything then turn them off, Some computers have serial port A & B.... 9 pin mouses went out 8 years ago.when they they went to ps2 inputs.
2. Everything now is almost USB2.0 input.soon even pS2 will be Void. Printers, cammeras, Ext drives, add in Devices have all gone USB2.0
If you are not using the old type of printer with the old biggest pin port on the back, or if you are using a printer with a USB hook up then by all means turn the parallel port OFF
3. If you are using a usb Mouse and a usb Keyboard the turn off the PS2 hookups.
4 If you dont Boot with a Memory stick Turn off Boot From USB DEvice
5. IF you no longer use a floppy drive and floppy Disks, You are Right TUR THE off. You have to turn The Floppy off in a few places, IF you ever need floppy use again you can always turn it Back on
6 IF U dont know how to do this stuff get help. Changing the Wrong ITEM in the BIO'S Setup could cause your Computer not to start.
7. I believe we have a post in this forum on how to speed your computer up.
Most people With Stock Computers are running and loading up a ton of stuff they never use or need. SLOWING DOWN THE COMPUTER AND THE BOOT UP TIME. If You are not using Netmeeting Dump It If you are not using your computer as a SERVER then kill those features
There are pages and pages of thing you can remove out of you Computer that is no longer valid or of any use to you. Dead end Shortcuts that point to nothing. folders with Zero bytes in them, Keyboard settings for the folks in transelvania. I have a headset and steer my friends over the phone how to disable all the junk a computer is packing, I wish I could do this for all the brothers and sisters...remember these thing were made so even the farmer in Bosanwana could use it. I have seen XP computers with as manny as 2000 dead entries things pointing to things that are not there, when you un-install a program from your computer XP leaves all kinds of left over folders and files it will never use again and keeps a useless log of all of the junk inside. your prefetch folder in windows, you can safely delete everything in there once a week. I recommend a better uninstaller a freeware program that does a much better job. it is called REVO UNINSTALLER. you just would not believe how much faster your computer will run when you toss all the needless excess weight overboard.
SP3 has all the Hardware Fixes in one package unlike SP2 installing a piece at a time. SP3 has all the Scurity updates, Hot Fixes, CPU updates MIrcode updates. VB62 updates many many ups all in one package incluiding all of the SP2 patches and Fixes.
. Trim the Sails matee and Gods speed ahead....

Me too on the quick machine. I don't do Internet Explorer... have been on Opera since ~version 3-4.

Believe me the sails are trimmed... it's just that it's like SP3 takes the wind out of my sails (Bermuda triangle effect).

I'll probably install SP3 when I reinstall Windows in a few months. Right now though, I see no reason to install it, since it really doesn't bring anything new to the table when compared to an SP2 install with all of the hotfixes.

And mrghost, if you really want to "trim your sails", then I would suggest using nLite. You can cut out any XP components/services that you want to, and you can slipstream SP3 directly onto an SP2 install disk.

Hmm did they remove SP3 from updates? I didn’t download it at publish since it said it was only a culmination of all the patches since SP2 which I already have. I don’t see it on the list any longer though. Kind of a useless update if you already have all the patches…
Not sure why people are having problems, maybe M$ dorked the build from all the existing patches, which is possible.

Its a littler easier for some folks, It contains all the SP2 stuff and plus. I always do all my updates manual. Sp3 just makes it easy instead of having to do a 100 plus small installs, one at a time. My Oem already has sp2 built in, Like most people it is just a pain to install all the extra updates, Hot fixes, Secuirty. So most people just use auto. I am anti-Auto, Cant help it. I have allot of power programs that can force windows to run as I want, But most people dont know these exist or even how to use them if they had them, or even what to trim. I have been focusing on fast boot up times by turning off all the hardware in the bio's that are no longer needed, that you dont use. You may know Heely Joe But allot of folks dont, Hence forth the Forum to help each other set thing up. I hope that does not annoy you. Slow poor performing computers annoy me. So l Like many, I try to help out cause I have been into this stuff from 1970. It seems to annoy some people when they come across someone like me, old with decades of experience. Just stick to the plan and help who you can.
It looks like so far some are benifiting from SP3, other are not. If you are running a older Computer with under 512 mb. I dont believe I would install the SP3 update. When you force a computer into virtual memory mode it slows things down. Most boards 5 years old will and can take a 2gb boost. The ram prices are low in price lately. I recommend 1gb minimum. Now days 512 mb is just enough to run XP and a Good Printer, to do more multitasking you need a Bit more to keep up a fair speed. 2 gb is really great. Nobody likes their computer to run slow. Mrghost the Old guy..lol..

well, pooey.....my 2001 Dell 4100 is OEM, and I'm only allowed to go up to 512 MB RAM. I have an Intel P-3/933 mhz, 40 GB HD. that's pretty old, LOL
when I got the Dell, I had ME, and then upgraded to XP, and patched in SP1, and just almost 4 years ago, patched in SP2. But those damned hot fixes are what cluttering up my add/remove list.

I don't network, I do have floppy disk, but RARELY use it...it's mostly CD's or flash drives now. I do have some weird files that were pre-XP when I upgraded XP and I'm def. sure my printer is USB-based, not sure about my keyboard/mouse (I can look them up via 'properties')

your prefetch folder in windows, you can safely delete everything in there once a week.

could you define prefetch folder? I'm somewhat computer savvy, but not where it's buried deep in the XP muck LOL

it'd be great if I have a dumbed down walk thru to get rid of junk that I've inadvertently accumulated over the years.

To see all of Your folders in your computer some are hidden. You have to go to the control panel Click on folder options, the second upper tab called views, check or uncheck display all hidden folders, just dont click on the last in the list, windows will give a warning. just checking the correct one will allow you to see 99 % of the files and folders. then close it after making your choices. open up windows explorer then windows/prefetch, and select everything in there and delete it. do not delete the folder. These are useless log files and can grow to 120I never let them accumlate that high. One of my power programs auto dumps them now anyway, but you can do the same manualy.
Also go to my computer, Rclick on the C: or Root drive and uncheck indexing service. useless. it for speeding up searches at the expence of eating up your ram. Also disable hibernation if you are not using features where you need to leave your computer in a sub-dormaint state.
I just ordered a new motherboard for a friend a nice little unit, I built the same for my wife 2 months ago . It is a Msi 2.8 Cpu Comes with a Fan and a Stick of 1gb DDR2 ram for 109.00 us If you have a friend that can build it for you. has AGP 8x video, May have onboard Video has 4 usb2.0 ports on the back and 4 extra on the board to run to the front 3 pci slots Very important it is at 3btech.net Check it out, It is real fast Its a P4 you may have to change your Power supply for 15.00 at the same site. This little board really flys and the lan is faster than my intel. Her boot up time is under 60 seconds, Excellant value for the money..Mrghost,.. the old guy lol.

not sure where I can find that in my 'root drive' and get to the indexing service.

Also disable hibernation if you are not using features where you need to leave your computer in a sub-dormant state.
I usually leave my computer on, with the screensaver running. If I know I'd be gone for more than 4 hours, I simply shut my computer down.

not sure where I can find that in my 'root drive' and get to the indexing service.

1.Click on the Icon on the Desktop My Computer

2. IT will show all of your drives and CDROM or DVD DRIVE

3. Rckick on the Main Drive knowen to techs as the Root Drive For your sake it is just labled the ( C: ) if you have a second harddrive it will be ( D: ) drive

If you dont Have a second Hard-drive the the next letter assinged that is( D: ) For the CDROM DRIVE the DVD WILL BE ( E: ) Each unit or device pluged in useualy get a letter assinged to it. like the floppy drive is ( A: ) if you have 2 floppy Drives the next floppy will be( B:)
A B C D E F G see the pattern C: is the main Drive, the Root, The heart of the computer, has many pet names.

SO rclick on the C: drive and at the bottom of the menu click on propetries. Un check indexing service at the bottom of the Property Box, It will take a few minutes to change the Hard drive Dont Disturb it, When it is done youll know.

Next we will kill the hibernation lesson 102
Mrghost,..I hope this is plain enough for you. I believe you can do this.

PowerGREP and xplorer² for me... I know what you mean!
hah yeah, I just have a lot of RAM, so it doesn't concern me. My RAM cost me as much as the sum of the parts of my system. I have mountains of documents, images, audio/sound files, my 3d modelling files and textures, all that I must have a search tool for, nearly on a daily basis.

Disabling the indexing feature does not cripple the search feature. Have you tryed it cause if you havent then you dont know what you are talking about.
I have over 30 gigs of small wav. 30k. to 3mb. samples, and ton's of graphics due to my AutoCad, Paint shop Pro.5 major Music Creation Programs 30 Virtual Istruments and Tons of other Stuff and programs, SATA2 160gb.,...Max ATA100 200gb.7200. 1 ext. Sata2 200gb. 1 ext.USB 30gb. Doesnt stop me one bit. and does'nt stop the search feature when called on, what it does do is assing attributes to each file. I am glad you have all the ram in the world, cause you are wasting it using the indexing system. allot of folks still have computers with 512 mb. of ram. I personally know a few running 256mb.This is a well documented and well known fix among many Tech's and perfectionist Tweakers. I have lots of ram too, Big deal,.. I disable the indexing service so my computer can focus on the task at hand. If you have not tryed this, then go to the back off the buss.DO NOT ASSUME THAT TURNING OFF THE INDEXING IS GOING TO CRIPPLE YOUR SEARCH ENGINE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT.... ENGAGE BRAIN... BEFORE INSERTING FOOT INTO MOUTH.......... LOOK IT UP IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME..............Mrghost the real old old guy.

If you're like most Windows XP users, you've probably read that the Indexing Service is unnecessary and that disabling it will improve the operating system's overall performance. Although these statements aren't entirely true, most people buy into them because they really don't understand the benefits of using the Indexing Service.

If you regularly search for specific content in data files on your multigigabyte hard disk, the Indexing Service will definitely save you time and therefore can be considered a necessary service. In fact, I have literally thousands of articles in Word documents, and I've discovered that searching for content with the Indexing Service turns up results hundreds of times faster than using a standard search engine.

Furthermore, like a screen saver, the Indexing Service is designed to perform its intensive hard-disk indexing operations when the computer is idle. The service pauses whenever it senses activity from the keyboard or mouse, so it will never drag down system performance when you're using your computer.

But not everyone has lots of Ram or a config like you. TO each their own some of the smaller systems don't need this service. Each computer must be custom tuned for the individual using their system, Some need this, some need that. I am trying to help someone with a smaller system, So you just butt in and take over, no problem do it, It is her choice, I have plenty of others to help. This was not posted for your benifit, And I refuse to get into a debate about abouts the specifics for all the different needs of each person.and each system, what works for you may indeed not work for her. The ball is in your court, If she wants your advice, But I believe she was addressing Me and not you. Peace...Mrghost
