I'm a little over 23K right now. It's good to be ahead because I'll be working a bit of overtime this month--My plot is too linear, so I'm looking to add a couple of subplots...Oh, and I'm gonna be killing off a few characters as well.;)

I joined, but I have no idea what it is. I thought is was just a place where I could write stuff, but they asked for a donation. And it only happens once a month? I need some help with this please!

Every November, participants try to write 50,000 words on a novel during that month. That's it. They do accept donations, but you don't have to donate to participate.

All you need to do is write. If, by Nov 30, you have written 50K words, you win. There will be a place to upload your novel so they can do a word count. Also, hit the FAQ tab for more explanations.

Congrats, cat on reaching 50K!!

And don't despair, Lel. you still have time to reach 50K. YOU CAN DO IT!!!:)

Thanks IV! Well, it seems I'll have to shoot for next year. Can it be OVER 50,000 words? And what do you win? I'm fine with writing for the fun of it. Heh... Sorry for all the questions.

Oh, yeah, it can be as many words as you want--I saw over there that some people are shooting for 100K. All you win is a certificate and some winner's icons you can use on your own site or whatever--so it really is pretty much writing for fun.

Also, the forums over there are active pretty much year round. They just shut it down for a couple weeks in September to get ready for the next year.

Okay. Thanks! This has been alot of help! Yeah, I saw the forums. Althought some things were kind of... bad... Stuff I don't think is allowed on this site. But it still has lots of cool stuff. I'm definitely going to try next year! Can you write your story BEFORE November? And does it have to be a specific genre? Thanks a billion times!

I'm definitely going to try next year! Can you write your story BEFORE November? And does it have to be a specific genre? Thanks a billion times!

The rules are as follows:
1. It can be started no earlier than midnight November 1st and must be done by midnight November 30th, so you have exactly 30 days.
2. 50,000 words must be written to be considered a winner, though more is perfectly acceptable.
3. You must start from scratch every year.

Pretty much as long as you don't violate those, anything goes. Any genre, as dirty or as clean as you like, and about whatever the heck you want. Personally, fantasy is by far my favorite genre, so I'm writing fantasy. Just pick whatever you're most comfortable/familiar with.

As for trying next year, why wait? 50,000 words is certainly still possible this year, though very difficult. I know a lot of people who even though they don't have the time to do the actual competition still want to somewhat participate, so they make their own challenges. We're about halfway through the month, why not shoot for 25,000? You won't be considered a winner, but people rarely are their first year even when they're going for the full thing. And it is a lot of fun. I didn't realize how much I was going to enjoy it until I started writing. So give it a shot, even if you don't go for the 50,000, try out something.

As expected, last week was crazy, and I had little time to write. 25,000 words in the first 5 days, and then just over 2000 words for the next 7.

Last night, I got back to it. I had left myself in a rather dry moment of the story, with no idea how to get to the next major plot point. So, starting back was a little daunting. Once I got going, it went pretty well. I was able to write to -- and through -- that plot point, and am feeling a lot more comfortable about some of the unexpected character developments.

The story is going to take quite a bit of work once this mad dash of a first draft is done, but I have hopes the result will be fairly readable.

I'm just over 30k, and feel pretty good about reaching 50K before month's end. Hopefully that will coincide with the end of the story, too.

so, who thinks i can write 50k in 9 days?

you win the sense of accomplishment. :D
It's feasible...but yow! One day of "I don' wanna", and the avg words per day required goes waaaaaay up there. Best of luck! I'll lead your cheering section

There were a couple of people who wrote 50K words in 48 hours as a challenge during the first week of nano. The only way I could manage that would be via unchecked free association and massive quantities of coffee.

Oh wow...50k in a matter of a couple days??? I'd need at least three or four other people in the room writing with me...with many energy drinks and coffee and such being passed around. I wonder if i could do it though...

You all are doing fantastic!! I haven't broke 12k yet and am currently trying to write a fight scene to eat up some of my word count. The only problem is that I don't know what my MCs are going to be fighting. Crud.

Man, if I can make it to 20-30k by month's end, I'll consider myself a definite winner, icon or no icon! :D Not bad for a first try, eh?

Darn... I joined a few days before November and I could've wrote then... I would try to write now, but I have school. If I devoted the whole weekend to writing, then I could probably do it. Cool! You're writing fantasy WM? That's my favorite genre! That is most definitely what I'll be writing. Atleast I'll have a year to think what I'm going to write. I can't wait! I'll be prayin' for ya OWL! Thanks for all your guys help! I'm going to write like I've never written before! WOO-HOO!
