  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course not. Their gender does define certain genetic traits that accompany it, though.
Cool! So we agree :) I know there are some genetic traits which are defined by gender, such as the ability to produce certain reproductive cells by the organism.:)

As well as others, one might say that some of those stereotypical masculine traits are also determined by genetics to a degree.

Some men are very manly or masculine where are some girls are very girly or feminine

However I do think there are some people who just are neither-- I am so not a girly girl.. but I am in tune with a femmy side

That's very true, the essence of gender is something that's hard to put one's finger on, but it is there nonetheless.

I think it comes down to personal preference in life, everyone is entitled to their own preferences in the people they spend time with. There are no set standards as to what's best and what's worst in a relationship, or in a significant other, for instance.

I think that we love to over analyze at times. It sounds like we're disagreeing, but in reality we're arguing about different things. I can throw up drywall and still look like a woman. I may not wear a dress to do it though.
Yeah, but what motivation would you have to do it? I think that's the key note.

The women that turn me off the most are the ones that go out of their way to prove something about how they can do the same things as men - I know they can! I don't need them to try to compete with me, I don't even compete with other men. :D

I used to work with a woman at a metal warehouse who was like that. Everything we had to do during the day, she would do it with this attitude of trying to prove something to everyone else around her. We got into a lot of arguments, and I ended up quitting because I got so sick of dealing with it. I've also met a lot of women like that in moving companies and UHAUL places. Life is complicated enough without senseless competetion.

To be honest, the women who turn me on the most are the ones who can do things like that without wanting to prove something about it... and who know where to draw the line. Afterall, I really love being able to enjoy a camping trip, or hunting, or fishing with someone I'm seeing - but I also like being a protector and provider from time to time. ;)

I do work around the house and I'm building a potting shed in my backyard because I want to and I can. I don't do any of these things for an audience. My dad was a do-it-yourselfer and my brother is one now. I don't like messing with plumbing, but I'm too frugal to pay someone to do it for me if it's something I can do for myself. It seems ridiculous to pay someone to put in new faucets, but the guys at the hardware store stand there with their mouths open when I tell them I'm doing it myself. My ex-husb. broke things and wasn't the type of person who got pleasure out of a job well done.

I also decorate cakes for fun, like to garden, and I paint my toe nails. I'm a nurse so I'm in what is still a predominantly female profession. I like it when a man treats me differently because I'm a woman. I'm happy to let a man open my door and be my protector. Please don't ask me to take a fish off the line. When I find the godly man that God has for me, I will consider it an honor to submit to my husband.

This is something I have to work on... Sunday morning, a guy in church said he would take a bunch flying over town in his plane. All the guys were like "heck yes!" Immediately, my mind went into that competitive mode. I started thinking of the 'stereotype' that girls don't like to fly. I thought 'I have to prove myself'.

As the hours went by, I realized that the only reason I wanted to do this was to 'prove myself'. I was sick with a cold, I had eaten something the night before that didn't agree with me, and I hadn't slept the night before. What I really wanted to do was go home (I was having lunch at a friend's house), dope myself up, and go to bed.

Well, that's what I decided to do. I stayed home. I realized that nobody really cared whether I went flying or not. I decided I'd wait until he asked again... I'll probably feel better then... And I would do it because it'd be a fun opportunity and not because I was trying to 'prove something'.

I love the way you word this. I find it intoxicating also. I can lose myself in a man who loves God unabashedly.

I like masculinity but it shouldn't be a guy's first priority. It shouldn't be his

It shouldn't be his priority to be MACHO, but I think being manly/masculine is something different. IMO Macho is an attitude, manly/masculine is more of a way....does that make sense?

My friend talked about bullies in school who wanted to prove they were a 'man' by picking on this guy. He gets done telling me how hurtful that was and then turns around and says, "I want to a 'manly' man".

See, IMO, the former, is being "macho" - trying to PROVE you're something. It sounds to me like your friend doesn't think a real man - or "manly" man would do that, and he wants to emulate the latter rather than the former. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Irascible, excellent points on jealousy...I've heard it put like that before.

Does that mean you're not into women who can change their own oil/tires (can change my own tire, but figure that's what my brothers are for); can fix the leaky toilet better (I CAN do this), and quicker, than you; can wield an ax like Paul Bunyan ( I really, REALLY wanted to be able to cut my own wood for camping, but two of my brother's just laughed when I asked to borrow an ax & lent me a hatchet instead!   & why is it that they get all the good power tools for Christmas and I get....perfume and sweaters! ); can out shoot you; etc, etc.

They are, IMO . I got the impression, however, that you didn't think so because you took issue with the word 'manly'. If you think they ARE the same thing, then I think most of us are on the same page:) .

I'm beginning to think so myself... I've always just put manliness next to Godliness. Macho, though, is a different thing. Macho is a turn off.

I agree..."macho" can be a turn off if it's a constant. I think, however, that some godly men can have periods of time where they display "macho" characteristics because of insecurities in certain situations, or because they're new to godliness. But then again, I think femininity is great, but I have a problem with "girly" because I attribute that to "prissy" and "shallow", neither of which are attractive to me, in girls I choose as friends. "girly" brings to mind the era when it was considered "feminine" to swoon, and play coy, again, both turn-off's when considering friends.

It's all in the connotation of the words as people understand them. Some people probably like the world "girly", I don't. No big deal. To some, it simply means feminine. A bit of clarification is all that was needed.

I definitely think 'girly' girl is the other side of the coin in this issue. 'Girly', to me, means shallow and that's not Godly. To be a Godly, feminine woman, all you need to look at is Proverbs 31.

I'm a 27 year old male virgin who has never kissed or seriously dated a woman either (although I have held ONE hand) and am loking for just what you are, a life-fulfilling relationship.

To that I have to say there is a popular saying in the church of "let go and let God." I think with regard to relationships some of us have to remember not only that but "Let go and let your hormones" as well. I'm not saying that we should totally disregard rational thought, but this is an area where you just have to 'feel' your way through sometimes. In my later years I'm finding I do much better when I just 'do' and not 'think.' Still not there yet, but I'm working on it.

As far as gender roles, it's very clear in the biblical account of creation that God made us male and female with specific roles and identities, a theme carried through the entire bible. Certainly those have blurred in the last few decades due to both humanity's needs as well as our own percieved intelectual superiority and independance from an awesome creator, but they are still there and functioning. No mater how much I might call a car an airplane no mater how much I drive it down a runway at high speed it will still stay firmly attached to the ground, a recent episode of Monster Garage notwithstanding.

The point is that design points to both a function and a creator. We ignore both at our peril!!
