Catholic school apologizes after clip emerges of students mocking Native Americans

They released a joint statement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington Saturday afternoon.

"We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan 18., after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C.," the statement read. "We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church's teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person. The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion. We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement."

This is the proper public relations response. I know back in the day in Catholic high school what would follow. And it was not just detention and some essay on how the actions were wrong. Your knuckles would be raw.

Where is the video of the feces and urine throwing youth? The thrown punches?

You must have this thread confused with another one.

I get it. It was disrespectful and that alone is wrong.

And yet we have one person here poo pooing the behavior and I've seen Conservatives all over the Internet saying they did good.

But to strain the gnat on this is quite ridiculous. Whoever the chaperones are need to deal with this.

Again, we literally had a thread in American Politics for the purpose of making fun of a newly elected, but not yet sworn in freshman member of Congress. This might seem like fluff to those in the Salon, but it's a perfectly legitimate topic for discussion of where and who we are as a country in 2019.

Apparently the school is considering expulsion as a punishment for the boys.

Again I get it. It’s juveniles acting inappropriately, rude and frankly not loving neighbor. The school and I’m sure the parents are dealing with this.

When I read some of the initial reports I expected arrests, reports of burning cars and club wielding radicals like some DC protests.

At the end of the day we have punks who need a good paddling and a sermon series on Matthew chapters five through seven and the parable of the Good Samaritan. In fact if they really want to punish the youths, they would ask a pedagogue like me teach it.

Of course. If it’s a Catholic HS worth its salt the discipline options are numerous. Just the bus ride home wondering what that may be is punishment enough.

But I don’t think they allow a lot of what was available back in the 80s.

I've been a Native American activist for almost 28 years and I've never seen Native Americans burn cars or be club wielding radicals. I've attended numerous NDN activist public demonstrations from peaceful protests against DAPL to protesting NDN Mascots at a Dallas Cowboy football game when the Cowboys were playing the Washington football team whose name I refuse to type or say out loud.

>> The contrast between the calm dignity and quiet strength of Mr. Phillips and the behavior of #MAGA brats who have absorbed the spirit of Trumpism--this spectacle is a lesson which all Americans can learn. <<

I don't like the kids at all, and I agree, there is a lesson we can all learn here...using this unjust action towards the Native American as ammunition to fight our own selfish battles, not to mention making a very unfair statement about Trump, is not much better than what the kid did. We already know Trump doesn't have to do a thing to get bashed around here but this is a low step below the norm.

All about opportunity, and the truth be darned, right? I'll be waiting for some type of proof Trump shares the same ideals as those kids do towards the man..

Considering the many many empty accusations I see every day about the man, and that it's very safe to say people lie about Trump constantly, it would probably be a complete waste of time just looking into those to see what "really" happened.

So why don't we simply stick with this case, would you like to offer some proof to what I asked?

Well, let's just hope that the hierarchy at this Catholic college deal with this abuse better than another certain Catholic hierarchy dealt with another kind of abuse. Catholic hierarchy's track record of dealing with problems within their own organisations is not good.

I assumed it was so from watching the whole video, and I apologize, I'm incorrect. The fact that the Elder approached that student and there were people behind the elder antagonizing the teens led me to believe that it was a counter-protest to the students, but it seems that the students approached the elder to make fun of their march, which is a non-partisan march asking for indigenous rights.

My bad, I apologize for it. The kids are unequivocally in the wrong.
Its always refreshing when someone on the internet changes their opinion instead of doubling down. You have my respect for that.

That diocese & school need to take a good hard look at itself and figure out why such a large group of their students thought this sort of behavior was acceptable. I went to a Catholic high school; that sort of attitude and behavior would NEVER have been tolerated there. While sure, there's always going to be idiots, I can't imagine such a large group of my class mates at the time thinking something like that would be acceptable. That's not the sort of thinking the school fostered.

Now, I'm an atheist, as much as I may disagree with the catholic church as a whole and several of its political positions, I always had respect for my high school in its level of education and teaching good community standards. The behavior exhibited by those students is an absolute disgrace.

Sure, disregard any documented evidence that Trump has exhibited racist behavior toward Native Americans and other minorities to continue such unwavering support of him. It's not like he has repeatedly used the name of a Native American girl to slander a political opponent or that he used a horrific massacre where an estimated 300 hundred Lakota were slaughtered in cold blood to slander the same political opponent or that he and his father were sued by the U.S. government for housing discrimination against black people. And hey, look at Trump's African-American standing over there!

Why do so many conservatives advocate violence against these guys? Hitting them is not going to foster respect for anyone, just more anger - plus it teaches that violence is the proper response to disrespect.

That dark-haired kid was menacing. He's a scary dude.

I never said that these kids are in the right; I'm just sick of the media playing up these instances for the sole purpose of pushing a narrative that "this is Trump's America" and "if you support Trump, you support this", rather than any actual investigative journalism.

I don't consider the words "support" and "condone" as all-or-nothing black & white descriptors. Obviously there are levels and nuances to it.

A more accurate way of stating it would be "This is the America of the emboldened far-right". ...and as much as it may not be a comfortable truth to digest for those who are on the right (but aren't in the far-right), it's a reality none the less.

Does everyone who voted for Trump actively support that kind of hateful nonsense? No, obviously not.

However, did they indirectly contribute to it with the way they voted? Yes. They did.

When they stepped into the voting booth, after knowing and seeing what an angry far-right looks like (they had 8 years to see it first hand with how they talked about & treated Obama "Lynch Obama Effigy Day", Tea Party rallies with swarms of people spouting conspiracy nonsense, calling him an secret Muslim, and putting photo-shopped pictures of his face on Bin Laden) and still thought to themselves, "I think that picking their preferred guy and giving them what they want is a less offensive concept to me than having a moderate Democrat in office", they indirectly supported and quasi-condoned that sort of behavior.

At the end of the day, if someone is conservative, but despises what the far-right is doing (but still didn't want to vote for a Democrat), the ethical thing to do would have been to just stay home last election, let Trump lose, and thus...compel the RNC to pick someone better next time.

The fact that I heard so many people say "Well, I don't like Trump, but I have to vote against Hillary" tells me that either a lot of people, deep down, did like Trump (but just used the vote against Hillary shtick to make themselves seem like they had a noble reason for doing it), or they simply fell for far-right rhetoric.
