In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Context is that the Native Americans decided to walk into the school kids to try and intimidate them.

Holy Moly! An old man walks towards a group of dozens of teenaged boys and that was supposed to intimidate them?

Are you getting this garbage from the histrionic Gateway Pundit garbage piece based on a 6 second out of context clip?
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/20...alked-up-and-got-into-our-friends-face-video/

Instead, these kids weren't at all intimidated by the Native Americans, and stood their ground and openly mocked them.

Yeah! Show that old brown man you're not going to be intimidated by him daring to be in your presence! What a bunch of tough guys MAGA!

I wouldn't expect anything less from trying to push through a high-spirited crowd of teenaged boys.

Yeah, he's one "spirited" young fella respectfully doing the tomahawk chop.

This response verifies my claim that this article is all about politics.
It is posted in a political forum, and the young men in question are wearing political slogans on their heads...

Your response verifies attempts to excuse bad behavior by blaming others. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? I guess it doesn't apply to young white males.

Nothing I've said up until this point has verified your claim.

This video, which occurs in the context of Liberal adults counter-protesting high-school teens, who are marching for Pro-Life, being Catholic.

And yes, the teens are acting immature, and I condemn it.

But to believe that a teenager acting stupid is such a major news story to the point that it's posted here, when there are actual problems of real-racism that actually affects how people can function in society (including Donald Trump supporters) that aren't reported to nearly the same extent, is disgusting to me, which is the point of my post.

High School students are often idiots. That's just a fact of life.

And you disgust me by thinking that a teenager acting stupid in the context of counter-protesters is emblematic of systemic racism.

I'm not making it about Trump, the article is.

Actually the dude bros did that when they decided that MAGA hats would be an appropriate sartorial decision for the anti-Abortion march.

in your mind perhaps but in reality this is about monsters attacking people's rights to live.

It is of the highest dishonor to disrespect a tribal elder. I can guarantee you that these insolent and smug Christian boys would have received an ear full from me if I had been there too. I don't care if they are teenagers or not. I don't tolerate disrespect and rudeness that is shown to my elders. There is no excuse for their racist behavior, especially if they consider themselves to be Christian.

And it's an absolute embarrassment for elders to go out of their way to counter-protest teenagers, and then cry oppression when the teenagers act immature.

EDIT: From further research, it seems that the kids were the ones who started it, my bad.

Where in the article does it state that the elder counter-protested the teenagers? I read through the entire article and I must have missed it. I even used Control-F and typed in counter-protest too.

I have a better idea - let's make an entire news story about how white teenagers go out of their way to oppress Native American elders.
as opposed to you trying to make a news story about how everything is an attack on trump and that as long as trump is protected you are willing to sacrifice all the morals in the universe tolerating any sort of monstrous behaviors you come across.

"Liberal"? With a capital L even? You seem to be making a lot of assumptions about Mr. Phillips. And protesting? Really? Mr. Phillips had been participating in Indigenous People's March which took place on the same day and in the same venue as the anti-abortion rally. You make it seem like he was there specifically to harass these dudes.

And yes, the teens are acting immature, and I condemn it.

First off this is the American Politics section, not News and Current Events. We've literally had threads here with no other purpose than to mock a recently elected, but not yet sworn in freshman member of Congress.

Poor oppressed white people.
That's a "Tomahawk" chop to you? Seems like a reach. One could say his half-committed raising of his hand to the chants similar to what most do at crowded metal concerts.

And while I'm sure there are multiple versions of this lame story, what I do know is that the Indian vet walked into the school kids not the other way around. Though I don't condone such acts from the kids, I'm not at all surprised by the reaction. Getting up in someone's face and chanting, is a well-known taunt in New Zealand culture (Haka war dance among schools) and though I could be mistaken (unlikely), I'm probably correct on the vets motivation to chant at the crowd.

Where in the article does it state that the elder counter-protested the teenagers?

The entire article:

A group of teens wearing “Make America Great Again” hats harassed a Native American Vietnam War veteran during Friday’s first Indigenous Peoples March. Now the Native American elder is speaking out about the ordeal.

Video posted online captures the unsettling incident in Washington, D.C., after a group of teens surrounds Nathan Phillips, mocking and harassing him as he sang the American Indian Movement song on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Phillips served in the Vietnam War and is the former director of the Native Youth Alliance, according to Indian Country Today.

One teen, in particular, is seen blocking Philips, smugly staring at the elder as he performs his song. Teens in the background appear to encourage the harassment.

Users on social media identified the teens as students from Covington Catholic school in Kentucky because of the insignia on some of their clothing. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington confirmed the teens were from Covington in a statement published Saturday:

“We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general,” the statement, obtained by WLTW, said. “The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.”

There also appeared to be at least one student from an Owensboro Catholic School saying on video that “land gets stolen all the time, it’s how it works.”

Friday’s Indigenous People’s March took place on the same day as the anti-abortion rally March for Life, and Covington Catholic’s website shows that students and faculty attended the rally. The school’s Twitter was made private following the viral video. Owensboro Catholic’s website also said its middle school students attended the rally.

HuffPost reached out to Covington and Owensboro Catholic schools for comment but did not receive a reply at the time of publication. President of Owensboro Catholic Schools Tom Lilly told the Owensboro Times the student seen wearing his school shirt made a “flippant remark” when he talked about land being stolen.

“Was that comment any more than a cynical remark? I hate for a kid to have made a flippant remark and get lumped in with Covington Catholic,” Lilly told the publication. “If the kid hadn’t had an Owensboro sweatshirt on it wouldn’t be an issue, but he did. He’s a good kid and I hate this.”

A video of Phillips’ response that appears to have been recorded Friday was posted Saturday to Twitter.

“I heard them saying ‘build that wall, build that wall,’” Phillips said while wiping away tears. “This is indigenous land, you’re not supposed to have walls here. We never did for a millennia. We never had a prison; we always took care of our elders, took care of our children, always provided for them, taught them right from wrong. I wish I could see that energy ... put that energy to making this country really, really great.”

Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) ― one of the first Native American women to be elected to Congress ― said the students displayed “blatant hate” against Phillips.

“This Veteran put his life on the line for our country,” Haaland said on Twitter. “The students’ display of blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance is a signal of how common decency has decayed under this administration. Heartbreaking.”

Phillips also faced racial discrimination in 2015 when he said Eastern Michigan University students were dressed up in feathers with their faces painted, mocking the elder leader.

“[The students] started whooping and hollering,” Phillips told FOX 2 News at the time. “I said that wasn’t honoring, that was racist. Then at that time, it really got ugly.” Phillips said he was subjected to racist slurs from the group during that incident.

This story has been updated with comments from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington and Owensboro Catholic Schools.

I assumed it was so from watching the whole video, and I apologize, I'm incorrect. The fact that the Elder approached that student and there were people behind the elder antagonizing the teens led me to believe that it was a counter-protest to the students, but it seems that the students approached the elder to make fun of their march, which is a non-partisan march asking for indigenous rights.

My bad, I apologize for it. The kids are unequivocally in the wrong.

Try again. Yes, the teens were there for a pro-life march but the Native Americans were there for a total unrelated reason, an Indigenous Peoples March. Beyond that, this Native American Elder goes to the Vietnam Memorial annually to "pray" (through the drum and song) for his slain comrades. This was not teens harassing counter protesters, these were teens harassing a Native American there for a completely separate event.

Did you happen to notice URL at the top of the screen capture? The one what starts with https: And has youtube.com in the middle? Followed by a series of numbers and letters? That's the actual video which you can watch for yourself.

Go ahead... I'll wait. And after you do, please come back and tell me he's merely waving his hand like a rowdy teen at a rock concert.

Tomahawk bro can be seen between 25 and 35 seconds in.

Boy, I don't know, man. You're really reaching on that one. But I don't think you're stupid, I think you lack attentiveness to details and are blinded by confirmation bias which has made you intellectually dishonest.
