President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that America formally recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, changing decades of U.S. policy in a brief afternoon speech and casting the move as a bid to preserve, not derail, aspirations for regional peace.

Appearing in the White House's Diplomatic Reception Room against an elaborate backdrop of Christmas decorations, He also said the United States embassy in Israel would, over time, be moved there from Tel Aviv.

Israel is the only country where the United States has an embassy in a city that the host nation does not consider its capital.

'I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,' Trump said. 'While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today I am delivering.'​

One suspects that Trump's support base will go up because he finally fulfilled this campaign promise which prior presidents said they would do, but never did.

Anything involving diplomacy he doesn’t recognize or understand and the real reason was mentioned above.

The Congress passed the resolution the 90's and the Senate reaffirmed it by a UNANIMOUS vote this year. What Trump has done was to refuse to sign another waiver of US law.

Trump acknowledged Jerusalem as the capital as it has been since 1948. Trump supported a TWO state solution. He made that very clear. He also made clear that the boundaries of the Israeli portion of Jerusalem are subject to future negotiations between the parties.

BOTTOM LINE
Trump acknowledged the status quo, and made clear that we would support a two state solution with Palestinians controlling part of Jerusalem. I'm not sure that this position of the US has even been made clear.

Probably more likely in coming weeks when he gets tired of repercussions of this latest brainstorm ; he will just declare that rest of the world has fallen to zombie apocalypse, close the borders and call incoming international transmissions as false news and ask funding for a wall completely encircling the USA.

Most of his base would probably believe and support such actions.
