THE LAW OF GOD


19.1 God gave to Adam a law of universal obedience written in his heart,1 and a specific precept not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.2 By this he bound him and all his descendants to personal, total, exact, and perpetual obedience. God promised life on fulfilling it, and threatened death on breaching it, and he endued him with power and ability to keep it.3

19.2 The same law that was first written in the human heart continued to be a perfect rule of righteousness after the fall.1 It was delivered by God upon Mount Sinai in TEN commandments (written in two tables) the first four containing our duty towards God, and the other six our duty to our fellow beings.3

19.3 Besides this law, commonly called the moral law, God was pleased to give the people of Israel ceremonial laws containing several typical ordinances. These were partly concerning worship, and in them Christ was prefigured—his graces, actions, sufferings, and benefits.1 They also gave instructions about various moral duties.2 All of these ceremonial laws were appointed only until the time of the New Testament, when Jesus Christ abrogated them and took them away, for he was the true Messiah and only law-giver, and was empowered to do this by the Father.3

19.4 To the people of Israel he also gave various judicial laws which lapsed when they ceased as a nation. These are not binding on anyone now by virtue of their being part of the laws of that nation,1 but their principles of equity continue to be applicable in modern times.2

19.5 Obedience to the moral law remains forever binding on all, both justified persons and others,1 both in regard to the content of the law, and also to the authority of God the Creator who gave the law.2 Nor does Christ in any way dissolve this law in the Gospel, on the contrary, he strengthens our obligation [to obey the moral law].3

19.6 Although true believers are not under the law as a covenant of works to be justified or condemned by it,1 yet it is of great use to them as well as to others, because as a rule of life it informs them of the will of God and their duty, and directs and binds them to walk accordingly.2
It also exposes the sinful defilement of their natures, hearts and lives, and as they use it to examine themselves, they come to greater conviction of sin, humiliation for sin, and hatred against sin. They also gain a clearer sight of their need of Christ, and the perfection of his obedience [to the law].3
Similarly, it is of use to the regenerate to restrain their corruption in that it forbids sin. The threatening of the law serve to show what even their sins deserve, and what troubles they may expect in this life because of their sins, even though they are freed from the curse and undiminished rigors of the law.4
The promises of the law also show believers God's approval of obedience, and what blessings they may expect when the law is kept,5 although these blessings are not due to them through the law as a covenant of works.6 If someone does good and refrains from evil simply because the law encourages the former and deters from the latter, that is not evidence of one's being under the law and not under grace.7

For those whose only concern is trying to find the best way to downsize the TEN Commandments of God "to nine" - please notice that the list of sources above are all Sunday-keeping sources....

In light of the Revelation concerning the last-day is depicted in the Image of the woman standing on the moon, and she has a crown of twelve stars.

The present condition of the world depicted in the prophecy indicates a violation in the Law of Yahweh. The premise made about the ten commandments being reduced to "9" is incorrect for our time. You might be seeing a past condition of historic mankind but it's different today as the ten commandments have been reduced to only the last three commandments

While agree that there is indeed a large "dowsize or demolish the Ten Commandments" group out there - that would gladly either ignore them altogether - or downsize them a peg or two - or as you say possibly reduce them to "just three".

But it can hardly be said that R.C. Sproul and Andy Stanley are not well accepted contemporaries in our own day. In fact there are a large number of Baptists today that tend more toward the Calvinist side of the fence - which accept Spurgeon's version of the "Baptist Confession of Faith" as well as the one above.

And there are also one or two Arminians today who follow D.L. Moody's model - for the Ten Commandments still in force today.

I see no proof at all, I've read Paul's writings carefully and he doesn't affirm but rather he rejects the 10 commandments upon believers calling it the Law... ministration of death, condemnation, etc.

This flips things around 180 degrees on what you are thinking it means. You are condemning others here but guess what? I'm in Christ and he doesn't condemn me. There is two laws here being talked about.... the law of the spirit of life (Jesus), and the Law of the flesh (Mosaic Law). Those who set their mind on the flesh (Mosaic Law) are not in the law of the spirit (Jesus).
You advocate people reject the spirit (Jesus) for the Law (flesh, 10 commandments).

Very great mistakes have been made about the law.   • The same law that was first written in the heart of man continued to be a perfect rule of righteousness after the Fall, and was delivered by God upon Mount Sinai in the TEN COMMANDMENTS, and written in two tables, the first four containing our duty towards God, and the other six, our duty to man.

  • Besides this law, commonly called the moral law, God was pleased do give the people of Israel ceremonial laws containing several typical ordinances. These ordinances were partly about their worship, and in them Christ was prefigured along with His attributes and qualities, His actions, His sufferings and His benefits. These ordinances also gave instructions about different moral duties. All of these ceremonial laws were appointed only until the time of reformation, when Jesus Christ the true Messiah and the only lawgiver, Who was furnished with power from the Father for this end, cancelled them and took them away.

  • To the people of Israel He also gave sundry judicial laws which expired when they ceased to be a nation. These are not binding on anyone now by virtue of their being part of the laws of that nation, but their general equity continue to be applicable in modern times.

  • The moral law ever binds to obedience everyone, justified people as well as others, and not only out of regard for the matter contained in it, but also out of respect for the authority of God the Creator, Who gave the law. Nor does Christ in the Gospel dissolve this law in any way, but He considerably strengthens our obligation to obey it.

  • Although true believers are not under the law as a covenant of works, to be justified or condemned by it, yet it is of great use to them as well as to others, because as a rule of life it informs them of the will of God and their duty and directs and binds them to walk accordingly. It also reveals and exposes the sinful pollutions of their natures, hearts and lives, and using it for self-examination they may come to greater conviction of sin, greater humility and greater hatred of their sin. They will also gain a clearer sight of their need of Christ and the perfection of His own obedience. It is of further use to regenerate people to restrain their corruptions, because of the way in which it forbids sin. The threatenings of the law serve to show what their sins actually deserve, and what troubles may be expected in this life because of these sins even by regenerate people who are freed from the curse and undiminished rigours of the law. The promises connected with the law also show believers God's approval of obedience, and what blessings they may expect when the law is kept and obeyed, though blessing will not come to them because they have satisfied the law as a covenant of works. If a man does good and refrains from evil simply because the law encourages to the good and deters him from the evil, that is no evidence that he is under the law rather than under grace.

  • The aforementioned uses of the law are not contrary to the grace of the Gospel, but they sweetly comply with it, as the Spirit of Christ subdues and enables the will of man to do freely and cheerfully those things which the will of God, which is revealed in the law, requires to be done.

In 2Cor 3 Paul points out that when the Law of God remains only external on tablets of stone it is death to those who violate it. - but in 2Cor 3 Paul contrasts that to those with the New Covenant promise of Jer 31:31-33 where the Law is written on the "tablets of the human heart" rather than merely external on tablets of stone.

No wonder then such groups as listed above choose to embrace God's Law rather than be at war with it.

In Rom 8:6-8 Paul tells us that the lost will view the Law of God as if they are at war with it. We can all see that point in the text.

In the dark ages there was this idea that acrimony and vitriol was the only response needed when the Protestant in question brings up some Bible texts that appear to cut across one's preferences.

Thank God we have left those days in the dark ages.

So you don't love God with all your heart and soul? You don't love your neighbor as yourself? Thats the law summed up.

Doing either doesn't send you to heaven, but you want to do it anyhow.
Its alright with me you attack by miniscule point to promote keeping the law.

I responded to the phrase "the law". The Christian isn't obligated to any the law.

Astounding that you can do that with Paul's affirmations of the Law of God.
