Elfen Lied = Bloodiest anime ever

Not 100% sure how true that is, but it certainly seems like it.

My username comes from the series main character, who develops split-personality after being headshot by a sniper. She switches between a harmless girl with the mentality of a 4 year old, and a psychopathic sadistic killer. The series has no shortage of gore and nudity, though there is almost no sexual overtones. The nudity that appears by and large is there simply because the character happens to be nude at the moment.

The ending in my opinion completely sucked, and I seriously wanted to throw something at the TV the first time I saw the last episode. Still, a great anime to check out, and the song Lillium will haunt your dreams.

Edit: Just discovered I can't post links yet, so Wiki it for more info.

I didn't like this anime, but a lot of my friends did. It had some interesting things to it, just too many of them were murdering machines.

yeah, pink haired girls with invisible hands [that could pick up really big stuff and crush someone, or tear them to bits [like that one girl who looked like Aeris [NOT aerith] from FFVII on the first ep.]. i'd rather'd watch Darker Than Black or Romeo x Juilet, frankly.

So I'm not the only fan here of Elfen Lied. It's a very bloody series to say lightly. However, I definitely enjoyed its overtones and plot. I liked how it pointed out that humans at our very core are very savage beings.

In fact the whole plot reminded me a little bit of Lord of the Flies.

Also the nudity was used to show how the Diclonius had been demunized to the level of mere monsters. I found the lead male character(can't recall his name) a very Christlike character. He loved unconditionally. Even when he knew all the terrible things Lucy had done, he still loved her because he knew deep down the type of person she really was.

If Lucy had been treated with a little more respect, she wouldn't BE a murdering psychopath. She was just a strange girl that got picked on one too many times. Look at it my way; if you can't or won't help someone who has done nothing wrong, at least don't make it worse.

True enough. The scene were the puppy was being beaten to death was literally heartbreaking.

I like Elfen Lied, but I also thinks that the ending was poor. That couldn't be helped, though. The series was pulled; they had to find a way to quickly wrap it up so that they wouldn't be half-way through something. I got it for Christmas last year. ^^

The art was pretty poor, though, and I think that the children and scenery were drawn better than the teenagers and adults. Their mouths were so high up on their chins. What was up with that? It bugged me constantly. As did the way they walked.

I don't like Yuka at all. She became jealous far too easily and was unnecessarily aggressive toward her cousin ... her cousin who she was sexually attracted to. What is up with that? I can't handle incest.

the lead male character(can't recall his name)
Kouta.

I disagree. The diclonius were also savage; it was explained throughout the plot that at the age of three, diclonius living with their parents would kill them first because they loved them. To me, that's savage. Also, what about Mariko, the third generation girl who took pleasure in long, drawn-out, gory killings? Nana and Lucy never took pleasure in killing, but Mariko, who was certainly not human and took immense pleasure in killing, was certainly savage.

If you thought the animation in the show was bad (I thought it was good for what it was, actually), look at the manga.

I think this depends on your definition of incest. Cousin marriage (even between first cousins) is legal in many parts of the world.

And again, the manga takes that part further. Spoilers!,
as the two of them have a daughter in the final chapter's flash forward. Kouta is also not the unconditionally-loving saint the anime ending made him to be, even though said flash forward at least shows him making some level of peace and reconciling.

*blind post*

there are most definetly bloodier anime... i have seen some of them though their names slip my mind atm... but elfen lied is definetly the most well known of the exceptionaly bloody anime....

i would also like to note that much of the anime you watch is very watered down and edited to take out alot of the blood and gore.... america has very diferent laws on public telivision than Japan does...

as an example my friend is a DBZ nut... he has both the origional unedited version from japan and the version he bought in america.... the unedited version has nudity in the first series... and there was so much blood on some of the episodes i was seeing red spots for days...

Ninja Scroll, Berserk, or X/1999, for starters. But unlike Elfen Lied, those all have gritter animation to go with the blood and gore.

Common misperception. But in most of these cases, the violent anime don't even get to TV in America to have to be censored (X/1999 was played on Sci-Fi once or twice, though, but that doesn't count because Sci-Fi doesn't report to the FCC* - I didn't watch through it, but the only thing I think was definitively censored was the nudity at the beginning, I did see that part on there; what does it really matter, though, I have the DVD).

*FCC compliance is only mandatory for broadcast channels; cable channels have no such obligation, although most do adhere to most of the FCC's guidelines voluntarily - unless you look at HBO, Showtime, etc.

If you look at stuff like Bleach or Naruto or even the finale of School Days, Japanese TV censored all the blood by coloring it black (and in the case of Witchblade or other shows with scantily-clad girls/women, covers them with more of a suit or with rather convenient fog or graphical effects that are only there on TV). None of this exists on the DVDs, though - American distributors for shows aimed at teens are the only ones that do separate TV and original DVD releases. In Japan there are no 'edited' DVDs, but the broadcasts can most definitely be and have been censored. All this may be more of a recent development, though, as it's not general moral outrage that generally drives the push for censorship over there, it's stuff that makes the news instead (the finale of School Days wasn't aired on schedule because of a rash of children/young teens attacking and killing adults, for instance, but it was released on DVD as planned).

Would Elfen Lied be even worth me watching? I know people that either love it, or hate it intensely. I love Berserk, but I still think it is the bloodiest anime out there (at least of the animes I have seen so far) and Blue Gender is by far one of the goriest animes ever. I found the first 6 or 7 episodes of Blue Gender disturbing, but that was what made it such a character driven story. Same with Berserk. Is Elfen Lied the same way?

I'm sure there's bloodier. I don't watch a lot of anime, but I can count many manga that far surpassed Elfen Lied in gore levels. Franken Fran <3

@Eretria90: I wouldn't say it was worth it. Just a dozen episodes of mindless gore and nudity. Much of whatever story there was remained lost in a sea of boobs and blood. The manga is better, but is still just okaaay. You get a lot more out of the characters and their stories. I would say the greatest difference is Bando, who was never granted his shining moments in the anime.

I've studied martial arts since the age of seven, and I find violence of this sort to be very unentertaining. It's like Kill Bill: could have been great, but was ruined by the blood factor.

Great way of describing it.

I LOVE ELFEN LIED! ITS SOOOO GOOD! I WATCHED ALL THE EPISODES AND THEY GOT HOT NAKED GIRLS IN LIKE MOST OF ALL THE EPISODES. I CANT BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY SHOW THE ANIME GIRLS NAKED IN THE SERIES!!!

I'm a Christian but I really shouldn't be watching such bloody and gory things...

Yeah Elfen Lied is by far the bloodiest and most nude anime series I have ever seen. It's very well made though. But I know that God doesn't like it.

btw Parasyte is just as good as Elfen Lied, has naked young girls and blood, but its only in manga series

Your whole post implies that you only watch anime for nudity and gore. I find that horribly sad. Why don't you just go full out an watch hentai, instead scarring the rest of the fanbase.

I really don't remember Parasyte having that much nudity. I remember it being surprisingly good, compared to what I thought it would be.
