To don't think that was the criteria. The whole Bible is weird.

No body really understands the criteria of the Reformers to reject the Christian Bible and accept the authority of the folks who rejected Christ as being more authoritative.

I respect any person of faith but...

One time when Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd proclaimed, "Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed" (Luke 11:27). There was never a better opportunity for Jesus to declare that Mary was indeed worthy of praise and adoration. What was Jesus' response? "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it" (Luke 11:28). To Jesus, obedience to God's Word was more important than being the woman who gave birth to the Savior.

Read more: What does the Bible say about the virgin Mary?

I will address this even though it's off topic. If you believe Jesus is God, then you should believe He already had given her praise and adoration. God sent an Angel, a messenger bearing words for him. What did the Angel tell Mary? Then she visits Elizabeth. The Holy Spirit stirs and what comes out of Elizabeth's mouth? Then Christ wounded and dying on the Cross, shows His veneration (respect and love) by assuring she is taken care of by the Apostle who stayed with him unto his death.

Now if you catch me worshipping Mary, you have my permission to admonish me greatly.

Now back those books of Holy Scripture your frightened of because they appear too Catholic.

Oh wow, a lot has happened while I was away.

I'm a Protestant in the fine tradition of the baptists and the Pentecostals. I have a mixed background. Cherry picking scripture is what this thread is about, not what I do. I'm surprised that people think they have something new to bring to the table regarding books that aren't canon. Do you really think the question hadn't been posed before? Reminds me of cult leaders and their "new revelations ". The fact that this is affecting peoples walk more than the Gospels concerning Jesus should be a red light for everyone...

You really think people here are cherry-picking scripture?

I'll have a proper read of it some time since you asked but I won't be changing my mind on it just yet.

I must add that beauty and emotion shouldn't move us beyond truth and wisdom.

Have a read of some of these book. I didn't read them because I thought they were scripture when I first read them.

There's a completely different attitude towards scripture in Catholicism, predominantly.

I'm not sure what the difference is, but Catholics do take scripture very seriously. After all, it is an infallible Apostolic Deposit.

Tobit is Scripture where Enoch isn't.

It is in the Ethiopian and the Eritrean Churches.

To don't think that was the criteria. The whole Bible is weird.

Yeah, you got that right.

If you're freed from extra biblical nonsense then why are you a Baptist? That whole credo baptism as a witness of your faith before the congregation (the public testimony thing) is extra biblical.
I disagree. Baptism is an important step for any Christian, although it's not necessary for salvation.
I knew you'd disagree for the reason that you stated but that reason is not biblical. The bible does not teach that baptism means a public testimony to your faith. So even though baptism does involve public testimony it is not the meaning of the rite. Hence your belief is not biblical and you have not set yourself free from extra-biblical practises and beliefs.

No one said it was the meaning of the rite.

Carry on your discussion guys.

You've missed the point of what Jesus was saying. He is correcting the woman in the crowd by explaining the real reason why His mother is blessed.
Luke 1:38 (RSV)
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Here is what we know, the writers of the o.t. taught works, NOT GRACE. Jesus taught the disciples GRACE, not works. Paul tried to mash them together in some sort of compromise postition that makes absolutely no sense at all. Here is what we don't know, why the people who selected the books of the bible missed the fact that these 3 groups of writers did not share the same theology.

Wrong ot works by grace...no one in ot was saved by their works... nt perfects your works...but it is God in you both to will and to do his works through you... Paul explains nature of Adam by wich works are powered is slave to sin which law revealed power of new man os adam nature dead. With Holy Spirit living in you making you alive. God speaks his word men dont chose it. Question at presant is are these books mens commentary in wich they can be helpfull but not binding or are they the word of God wich men have chosen as unimportant
