My Dad worked for the Navy as a civilian engineer. He worked on the F-14 and engine test cells. I remember he was always having to go in on the weekends because one of the cells went down. When I was 4 or 5 years old we went to his work and they had a poster with a picture of the SR-71. I was hooked and thought it was the coolest thing. I started putting together model airplanes pretty obsessively after that. Plus, there were always fighter jets flying low over the house because of touch and go exercises at the nearby Naval Air Station. The crash at Roswell in 1947 was a balloon, but not for weather, but rather detecting Soviet nuclear tests.
There *is* an Area 51 at Groom Lake and this was the test site for the SR-71 spy plane and at least one of the first stealth projects (F117 & B2).
I saw an actual B2 (or was it a B1, I forget) flying in the daylight over SD in the late 80s.
