Good thing the US has religious freedom or the EO would be out on their butts.

I had a priest once who went to Russia for something or another. The Russian Church sent a monk to stand in for him while he was there. That was back during the JW episode in Russia. The monk's visa was tied up because the US government was pressuring Russia to allow the JWs in so they were withholding visas for Orthodox clergy.

But anyways. The Russian Church was active in Alaska before the US bought it from Russia.

Guess we would have to break it down state by state on only allowing the first flavor of church to get there to stay there.

Europe went through that for hundreds of years. So did Egypt for that matter. Nothing good came of it.

Russia seems to have a hyper neo-con culture and it's reflected in its church as well.

Not too many Russians go online and say "I'm Russian, and people have no idea what they are talking about when supporting a tyrant like Putin"

"Or I'm Russian and I think Putin should resign; and stop provoking and nuclear black-mailing".

Need more of that.
That's a quick way into prison.

Non-westernized authoritarian regimes can tend to have, for lack of a better term, "watered down" versions of the religions (that they claim to allow the practice of in order to appear "free" to the rest of the world)...where either the religious figureheads are in cahoots with the regime, or they simply make revised "approved" versions of the texts and disseminate them and make the actual texts harder to come by (or even illegal to possess) in some cases.

Opinion | The Gospel According to Xi

For instance, there are efforts in China to have what they call "authoritative" versions of both the bible and quran where they want to strip things out that are "deemed incompatible with “core socialist values”". Or rewrite certain stories so they are in-line with "core socialist values".

In a nutshell, non-westernized authoritarian regimes tend to espouse that they support freedom of religion, but what they actually mean is "the version of the religion that doesn't allow you to question me, and doesn't present any challenge to my authority"

Be careful in drawing broad sweeping conclusions, especially from the Wall Street Journal.

The Three-Self Patriotic Church in China is a national church. It predates Mao- the Chinese state did not create it, merely accepted it as the recognized form of Protestant Christianity in China. It's theology has always tended towards liberal Protestantism, similar to mainline Episcopalian or Presbyterian churches in the US. It's never had an individualistic emphasis like you'ld find more commonly in US Evangelicalism, and the transcendentalism of traditional Protestantism downplayed in the transition of the church from foreign missionaries to indigenous clergy. It has more to do with East Asian humanistic cultural values than specifically Communist ideology.

There is a blog from a Russian Orthodox priest who is against the war on Ukraine & has been posting since the war started. Fr Ioann is in a tight situation but has persevered in his faith. The link is in Russian but translates within CF when accessed.

Some lower-level clergy in Russia have been outspoken over the years in criticizing the government. Higher level clergy are tainted by the KGB's legacy of infiltration.

"I'm no fan of evangelicals, but are you saying persecution of evangelicals in Russia is okay because the Russian Orthodox Church exists?"

Yes, that's pretty much what I'm saying. I don't think anyone should be put in jail for it, but they should be treated just as the Jehovah's Witnesses were treated: They were made to leave the country.

Russia's war on Christianity also extends to members of the Russian Orthodox Church. Priests who criticize Putin's war are arrested.

One can't be pro-Christian and pro-Russia.

Yes.
His answer confirms a war against Christianity by Russia or Russian apologists.

I can't speak for the poster. Nonetheless, any sect of Christianity that aligns itself with the force of worldly powers is, by definition, anti-Christ. We don't have to worry about the Russian Orthodox; we have plenty of it in the US and anywhere else nationalists, coupled with Christian institutions, are vying for political power.

Very true, indeed.

However, there are some living outside Russia who we don't hear enough from.
It's time for Putin to resign. His incompetence has shown in Ukraine, which is why he has to make nuclear blackmail threats. again.

Biden's incompetence showed in the disastrous Afghan withdrawal. You would think Putin would use that as a warning not to get into his own Vietnam, but he did. He needs to withdraw from Ukraine.

Thanks for sharing.
Russia arrests Russian orthodox priests when they speak out against Putin's war.

It's just total war against anyone Christian and non-Christian who speak out against the KGB Deep State.

The russian state church, led by a former KGB member, has become nothing but another tool for putin to control the masses.

Yes. The leader of the Russian Church is KGB.
The Russian Church is a Deep State Church.

In the US, we have a "Deep State" intel community that colludes with one political party; and decides what is Russian "misinformation"; then colludes with tech companies to censor info. Very KGB-like.

In Russia, the KGB is their own "Deep State"; but it does not collude with the State. It is the state.
Russia is a Deep State country. and the Church is a deep state church.

Conservatives who are against the Deep State in US; cannot support another Deep State in Russia.

Patriarch Kiril is either a deluded madman, or a wolf in sheep's clothing. But I disagree about the whole "deep state" conspiracy theory stuff. It is well known that the Russian Orthodox hierarchy is just a tool of Russian nationalists, even inside Russia to those who are informed. The moral posturing is just that, posturing and deception, a bit of Christian piety to gloss over a blood-drenched agenda.

They certainly can.

Conservatives would support the US "deep state" in a second of they thought it aligned with their values. Many are quite sympathetic to the Russian "deep state" because they mumble about traditional values and stuff.

Russia is an anti-Evangelical country.
One can't be Pro-Christian and also pro-Russia.

And Russia is the largest state-sponsor of Islamist Terrorism.
Supports Hamas, Iran, Hezzbolah, Syria.
One can't be Pro-Israel and also Pro-KGB.

Note: Many are being deceived by the likes of Tucker Carlson & his guests Jimmy Dore & Glenn Greenwald (both are followers of Fidel Castro & Marxism). This is Fox News today: relying on marxist sources. Just as bad as MS-NBC & CNN.

Better conservative alternatives that are anti-Russia but also pro-MAGA.
The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN News), Hannity, Newsmax, & The New York Post.
just forget about africa? middle east? where refusing to deny Christ gets your head lobed off wife murdered and children (young enough) stolen to be future fighters ...from what i see politics (world wide) has been ran by lucyfur (mispelled on purpose) and his followers...
