  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From here: Trump lobbied Fifa to lift Folarin Balogun suspension for World Cup game v Belgium

'Donald Trump lobbied Fifa to lift the US striker Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban for a red card received in the team’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, preceding Sunday’s stunning announcement that he would be available for the cohosts’ last-16 clash against Belgium in Seattle on Monday night.

Sources have told the Guardian that Trump made three calls to Fifa, starting from Wednesday, to ensure that the change was made.'

The red card was considered harsh in the first instance, but rescinding it after three calls from Trump stinks to high heaven.

Maybe it’s a perk given to FIFA Peace Prize W(h)inners?

Given that the president spent the prior week whinging about not getting to deport US born citizens, and he and his top henchmen spent the week complaining about people exactly like this player, I am skeptical.

It should not have been a red card to begin with. That was the consensus with most commentators and analysts.
I think it was harsh myself. But once given, unless there are extenuating circumstances, then it must remain. Trump ringing Fantino three times is simply not on. Well, actually, he is in his rights to ring him as much as he likes, but allowing Balogun to play after those phone calls...that questions the integrity of FIFA. Fantino in particular. As if he had any integrity to start with.

...the integrity of FIFA.
Did you just say the integrity of FIFA? :ahah: The FIFA that increased the teams to 48 this year? So Australia wouldn't have even been in if not for that? Trump deserves his face on Mt. Rushmore for this.

I thought it was a bad idea. Just a money making exercise. But...watching the quality of the games, I've now changed my mind. I was wrong. It's worked out well.

Actually I agree with you. More teams is more fun.

Are we talking about the same FIFA that was mired in fraud, money laundering, and bribery scandals back in 2015?

Getting a red card stuck from the record seems like small potatoes in comparison

I think international sporting (where it's country vs. country) seems like it'd be more prone to this sort of thing than domestic sporting leagues, as there's not only a lot of money moving around, and unlike domestic sporting, there's an element of "national pride" attached to it.

Even just getting hosting rights means big bucks.

As a soccer outsider, officiating seems like such selective and subjective garbage.

It doesnt help that players are incentivized to all sorts of unmanly histrionics.

What I really do like are the close ups of the ball handling. The skills are mind blowing.

But all the acting in soccer is really really irritating.
I know, all that flopping. You don't see it as much in high school and American club soccer, but the higher up you go, the more of it there is. If America really wants to succeed on the world stage they need to take acting classes.

Since nobody's brought race into this yet...England got a red card last night, and it was even worse than America's. The ref was said to be Australian. When I saw him and heard him, I thought "He sure doesn't look or sound very Aussie." So I looked him up, and sure enough, he's Iranian. Just sayin'.

I tend to agree about the problems within FIFA. But this action directly affects one of the games. I can't recall any similar type of incident. And when it appears that it's a result of a number of phone calls between Fantini and the US President about a US player, then...it smells really bad.

Apparently, not since 1962 has a red flag been suspended. But the political interference may be new.

At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, star Brazilian player Garrincha received a red card during his team’s 4-2 semifinal win over the hosts. At the time, a red card did not lead to automatic suspension from the next game – a disciplinary panel would examine the evidence and decide on the punishment. In the case of Garrincha, the panel decided to let him off with a warning. Garrincha played in Brazil’s 3-1 final win against Czechoslovakia, as the South American football giants won their second World Cup in a row.
More recently, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to play his side’s opening World Cup matches after FIFA suspended the final two games of a three-match ban he had received last year after receiving a red card during a match against the Republic of Ireland. Before he received the reprieve, he was poised to miss the first two games of the World Cup.

Check out any video of Messi. The best player the world has ever seen. And still playing brilliantly. But yeah, the histrionics are laughable. A total embarressment to the game.

Unwarranted? No way! I'll admit to my bias against England (being Welsh and Australian), but he caught him on the lower leg with studs up. He could have broken the guy's leg. 100% red.

No pun intended, but this is a whole new ball game compared to Garrincha and Ronaldo.

I don't believe for a minute that no pun was intended
