It was a good speech. Promoting 'Buy American' and unity in the face of global adversaries. Infrastructure and families, paid for by increased taxes on those making more than $400K and corporations.

Tim Scott's GOP response did not seem to address it head-on very much. It was 80% culture war.

Trump did that. He was a billionaire (millionaire since age 8) who lived in a golden palace in Manhattan claiming to stand up for the little guy. It's what politicians and demagogues do.

At least Biden has some blue-collar cred.

I agree with most of the 538 crew's one sentence summaries at the end of the live-blog. These resonate most.

Alex: Jabs And Jobs: The New Democratic Agenda

Julia: Tim Scott Responds To The Fiery Speech On Race That Biden Didn’t Give

Hakeem: Biden Reminds The Country That He’s Just Trying To Get Stuff Done. Oh, And Don’t Worry: He’s Definitely Not Joining ‘The Woke Left’ Anytime Soon.

If any right wing haters want an out-of-context quote to make fun of, I suggest:

"now we are on Mars, discovering vaccines"

Which struck me as funny when he said it.

The full spoken statement was: "Scientific growth took us to the moon and now we are on Mars, discovering vaccines, gave us the internet and so much more."

As published, the line was: "Scientific breakthroughs took us to the Moon and now to Mars, discovered vaccines, and gave us the Internet and so much more."

Most disturbing part of the speech to me – Biden never used the word “ China Virus” , or Biden never said “ Mexico will pay for the wall”

At least tell me he called somebody fat or ugly, or denigrated a woman in some way....

Sheesh, what's the presidency coming to?!?

Really? Spending almost an entire lifetime on the taxpayers dime and making all of his family members wealthy--very wealthy--thanks to his (Joe's) political connections, arm-twisting, influence peddling and so on...

does not seem to constitute any "blue collar" cred!

He wasn't a millionaire at age 8. Trump was. His daddy made him one. Joe was raised in a blue collar setting. While he may be a life-time politico at least he isn't a lifetime millionaire.

The irony is strong with this one...

Ted Cruz said the Republican Party is 'not just the party of country clubs' but CPAC is fixated on Donald Trump — a man who literally lives at one

He also proclaimed the Republican Party is the party of working-class Americans and not just country clubs — but the conference itself seemed to be fixated on former President Donald Trump, a man who literally lives at one.

It's a big tent -- with valet parking and an exclusive members list.

That's not much of a criterion. Plenty of millionaires were not captains of industry, etc. when they were in the third grade!.

Anyway, what you wrote was that Biden HAS "blue collar creds." Obviously, he does not. That's for the reasons already stated...and what he did as a child doesn't change that one bit.

Whet another failure for the he’s too demented to make public remakes or appearances narrative. Perhaps it’s time to retire that one to avoid further embarrassment?

It looks like you misunderstand. It's not that he cannot make public appearances, etc. so much as that he DOES NOT MAKE THEM.

The record establishes that. Of course, he rarely takes even softball questions from the audience, reporters included. Yes, he will make a speech now and then, after a number of days resting or practicing for the big day, but that isn't the issue.

So why is he opposed to doing what every other President does? Is it embarrassment at the pitifully few people who have shown up at his "rallies?" Or is there some other explanation you can offer us that does not include mental or physical limitations?

If you note it relates to the post I was responding to.

Anyway, what you wrote was that Biden HAS "blue collar creds." Obviously, he does not.

When he was born his dad was poor (having lost wealth). Joe and his parents and siblings had to live with their grandparents for many years and then later upgraded to their own APARTMENT in Scranton.

Later his dad became a successful used car salesman which kept them at a middle class level.

Hmmm, that feels like "blue collar cred".

...and what he did as a child doesn't change that one bit.

Seems to me he rose from poor to middle class setting and worked his way up through a legal career. His first political position was in 1971 when he would have been very close to 30 years old.

But I understand: for the GOP losers fail to be born to wealth like Trump and Gaetz.

Is this an English sentence or was it run through a couple machine translators?

At least Biden can speak better than this sentence.

Plenty of them never become "Captains of Industry" at all. Personally, I think it's a tad over the top to assign such a title to Donald.

Thanks, essential saltes, for giving us a transcript from a reliable source.

Biden is not an eloquent speaker, but he is an effective speaker, even when he stutters. What he lacks in oratorical skills, he makes up with his considerable gifts.

He radiates compassion, empathy, and sincerity. He soothes us with his gentle, systematic plans, assembled with a strong team of experts in their field.

He was not my top candidate, but I see that after four nightmarish years ending with a pandemic where, closeted in our homes, we panicked because our leaders only cared about the health of the economy and were willing to sacrifice our collective health for it, Biden is the leader we need.

He craves bipartisanship, but I hope that if it doesn't materialize after a fair time limit has passed, that Democrats will do the right thing and end the filibuster. I, too, hope for real bipartisanship, but haven't seen any efforts from McConnell and company for the past 11 years.
