Jeez, the internet irks my whole soul sometimes!
I've been online since about 1995 or so and a lot of people on the internet back then were acting almost like they were drunk or on drugs due to being anonymous. I don't think that the average person was online as it wasn't that popular at the time but rather I believe the people that were not socially "normal" in their functioning. People who had problems some of which were serious were on back then and nothing has changed sadly as instead of people getting online with problems people are now getting online and it is causing them to have problems by the nature of the internet and the people on it with........ problems causing problems.

Everyone, if you remember Someone's Angel from a few years ago here, she and her husband are still going through uncertain times. Please consider helping them financially, as she has asked me to share:

I bought a DVD only to find it was region-locked. I read Blu-Ray players don't have region-locked, so finally bought a Blu-Ray player!

But it still didn't play the DVD!!!

I ended up watching another DVD I had on it, & the picture's nice, better than on my old DVD player, not gonna lie!

So I'm moving up in the world: I'm getting streaming platforms in a month & now have a Blu-Ray player!

I know a lot of people say nerd culture is acceptable now, but I really don’t see it that way. I think that’s just Mainstream people trying to pretend everything’s okay now.

I think it's all about what people are familiar with. If I only read obscure comic book characters most haven't heard of then I'd probably get blank stares when talking about my comic reading habits. But every year more comic characters are becoming mainstream. (The Sandman being among the most recent.)

Another thing is how you present what you're doing. If I mention playing a Digimon game, many won't know what that is. But if I say, "It's like Pokemon with really crazy evolutions" they might think it sounds cool.

The only format that was not region locked is 4K Blu-Ray. For now the best physical media player for the buck is a Blu-Ray player as they can play CDs and DVDs also and 4K players are a lot more expensive and by the time you do get a decent collection of 4K discs the price of those players should come down. Blu-Ray players tend to be higher quality in the picture output as they have improved upscalers and converters. I will however still recommend those who have a large DVD collection and watch series/seasons a lot to consider Sony's DVD changers as they make for a lot less hassle switching between discs and all of the ones I've ever had remember the stop position of the last 6 discs in the player. They last changer they made supports 1080p upscaling but I don't think the 1080i of the earlier models looks any different on today's TV sets and the 1080i players are a lot more common. The only drawback to the changers is they take up a lot of space and without the right remote you can't switch discs remotely as universal remotes typically don't map a button for that function.

I want a 4K player but there are many second hand players that are mediocre and don't support all formats too like Dolby Vision and Atmos etc. The better ones run around $100 used or more and new ones $150 and way up. Samsung and a few other companies have stopped making Blu-Ray players entirely and there is most likely not going to be any more advances in the technology as the market for 4K players is shrinking even though the format has become more common now younger folks are less interested in physical media these day as streaming quality is competing well with Blu-Ray and 4K streaming has become mainstream although for most folks the quality of streaming at that resolution is no bargain.

On my 24 inch 1080p TV I have to almost get a magnifying glass to tell the difference between 480p (DVD) and 1080p (2K BR) and on my 55 inch TV you can equate 2K to 4K for the most part streaming but I have a low tier 4K Vizio TV and the picture is very good for the price at the time.

I hope physical media doesn't die. I like it gives you more options. Paramount things you can only get on Paramount+, Disney things you can only get on Disney+, etc. A physical media player can play it all. I go to the library & borrow things for no charge other than what I pay in taxes.

If streaming kills it b/c people think streaming's cheaper, they're not doing it right.

I think that online vs in person social presence differs considerably as online some folks have different personalities than in person. I am a little more outgoing online and perhaps more talkative but that is because for the most part people in person may be looking for different conversation and topics vs online and are perhaps more reserved as to what they say also. If you go to dating sites the nerds only get favor if they are rich and the attractive bad boys and girls get the most attention. I've been a nerd all of my life and I find few people want to hang around with me at all and nothing has changed over the decades except that I'm more picky about friends as some folks who are nerdy and not very sociable have issues that make them that way that also make them hard to deal with.

I don't think it will ever die.... look at vinyl and even cassette tapes now they are making a comeback but I am unsure if the cassette tape thing will truly last as it is most useful for portable music and few have portable cassette players these days but most have a smart device and streaming. I think the major consideration for physical media is movies and series that will likely always cost to stream or are less popular and will likely never stream at all or media that never got a decent quality region 1 release. I've seen a few movies that I cannot find on physical media in a decent quality format but can stream it in a better quality format for free. Older titles that were mastered before widescreen (anamorphic) tvs were common and Full screen (4:3 or 1.33:1) tvs were the market that have not been rereleased in a better format can now and then find a decent 720p widescreen streaming version online for free (commercials). I've picked up several library movies second hand stores that were hard to find and added it to my collection so you could find media that they have in their collection that hasn't been sold since the 90s and out of print also perhaps.

Since the pandemic started it was at first a boom for physical media as people were not allowed to work and were allowed to go to big stores for food and bought physical media to entertain themselves since you couldn't go out to eat or a movie or any other venue where people congregated. After the lockdowns started stopping all the people stuck at home that signed up for streaming or went to streaming for free got into it a lot more and used to it and media in stores that had risen greatly in availability dropped even lower than it was prior to the pandemic.
The issue with everything digital (no hard copies) is that you don't own anything you are essentially leasing it for free and hoping that the company is still around that has rights to it.
You can't resell digital copies or transfer ownership either, but you can inherit a blu-ray or cd collection

I forgot to say that certain DVD players can be hacked to all region but you may have to buy a certain remote and go through a process to make them all region. They also make region free blu-ray players but they aren't from the manufacturer and cost a lot more not worth it for a few discs but for someone that has a lot of other region movies like 2 or 4 here in the US it can be a wanted item.

Apparently when you reach 40, your body just starts breaking down. Or maybe it's just me
Nope.... it actually starts happening before 30 but isn't noticeable for most till around 40 and it keeps going and going unless both your living habits and genetics don't combat it well enough. Lots of stuff out there to mess you up.
