Hi LGW
Could you please expound on no. 4,
About keeping the Sabbath.
Why does scripture say that the Sabbath was made for man?
I read what you have in parentesis, but it sounds like it was made for man to rest.
Now Jesus is our rest.
??
Thanks.

In Hebrew scripture two verses are relevant:

Exodus 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy

Deuteronomy 5:12 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

I have bolded relevant portions. Which is the correct reason?

Hi GodsGrace101, I love your user name. Big welcome and very nice to meet you. Always happy to share God's WORD and good questions.

Jesus is indeed our rest and our peace as we seek him through his Word but not as some people teach that he is the Sabbath. There is no scripture for this teaching. The Gospel of Christ however is the POWER of God unto salvation to all who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD (Romans 1:16; John 8:31) and it is by BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD that we have rest in him (Matthew 11:28-29) because he is the LIVING WORD of GOD (John 1:1-4; 14). This however is NOT the Sabbath. Hebrews 4 teaches none enter into God's SEVENTH DAY SABBATH rest without first entering into God's gospel rest by BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD.

All who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD are God's people. Gentiles are now grafted in to God's ISRAEL (Romans 11:16-27; More scripture here linked).

So YES God's rest is found in his WORD to all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD by FAITH. God's POWER is in his WORD and is given to all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW it. (1 John 5:4). Those who have FAITH in God's WORD do not practice sin because they BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD by FAITH (1 John 3:3-10; Matthew 11:28). This is the rest of BELIEVING and FOLLOWING the gospel (God's WORD).

God's LAW (10 Commandments) which is a part of God's WORD, gives us a KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is. (Romans 3:20). God's WORD says that if we break ANY of God's 10 Commandments we commit SIN (Romans 7:7; James 2:11; 1 John 3:4).

Now let's expand a little further.....

God's 4th Commandment which is to keep the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH as a HOLY DAY (Exodus 20:8-11) is one of the 10 Commandments that give us a KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is if broken. None of the 10 Commandments can make us perfect but their role is to point us to the Savior to show us that we are all sinners in need of salvation (Galatians 3:24). We are ONLY saved by GRACE through FAITH and not of ourselves it is a gift of God and not of works lest anyman should boast (Ephesians 2:8).

In the NEW COVENANT God's promise is to write His LAW (10 Commandments) in the HEART of those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD (Hebrews 8:10-12). LOVE is the fulfilling [doing] of God's LAW to those who have faith in God's WORD (Romans 13:9-10) and the fulfillment of the two great commandments of LOVE to GOD and LOVE to man (Matthew 22:36-40) and is why Jesus says if you LOVE me keep my commandments (John 14:15).

God's 4th commandment in the NEW COVENANT is one of the ten (Exodus 20:8-11). If we knowingly break it when God asks us not to we stand guilty before God of committing sin (James 2:8-12). If we do not seek him in repentance and forgiveness we are in danger of the Judgement (Hebrews 10:26-27)

Sunday worship is a tradition and teaching of man that has led many to break the commandments of God. Jesus says that if we follow the traditions of man that break the commandments of God we are not following God (Matthew 15:3-9)

There is not one scripture in all of God's Word that says that God's 4th Commandment is now ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day.

Many UNKNOWINGLY break God's 4th Commandment because of what they have been taught by the Mother church (Roman Catholic Church).

God is calling his people out from following man made traditions to worship God in Spirit and in truth.

In times of ignorance God winks at but when as knowledge of the truth has come God calls on all men everywhere to repent and believe his Word (Acts 17:30-31)

Hope this helps sister and may God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

I have bolded relevant portions. Which is the correct reason?

Hi JackRT, both are correct. To understand God's 4th Commandment we need to understand the ORIGIN of it, which was the SEVENTH DAY of the creation week. This is what your first reference from the 10 Commandments is referring to in Exodus 20:8-11. The second reference is to the same God that created all things and that he was the one who delivered his people from the hands of the Egyptians when they were slaves in bondage. The first reference it to REMEMBER God's SEVENTH DAY and that it was God that is the creator of all things in Heaven and Earth. The second reference is that this same God was the one who delivered his people from slavery. The SABBATH is a sign of sanctification to God's poeple (Exodus 31:13)

Let's have a look at the scriptures on the ORIGIN of God's 4th Commandment...

GENESIS 2:1-3
[1], Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
[2], And ON THE SEVENTH DAY God ended his work which he had made; and he RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY from all his work which he had made.
[3], And GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY, and made it HOLY <the 7th day>: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

RESTED H7673שָׁבַת shabath
(shaw-ɓath') v. to repose, i.e. to cease from exertion.
{used in many implied relations (causative, figurative or specific) [a primitive root]KJV: (cause to, let, make to) cease, celebrate, cause (make) to fail, keep Sabbath, suffer to be lacking, leave, put away (down), (make to) rest, rid, still, take away. Some points to note from the scriptures...

v1 God completed creation in 6 days and RESTED on the 7TH DAY
v2 God RESTED on the 7TH DAY
v3 God SET APART the 7TH DAY and made THE 7TH DAY a HOLY DAY
v2 The 7TH DAY is part of the FINISHED WORK of the CREATION WEEKLet's now look at

God's 4th commandment...

EXODUS 20:8-11
[8], Remember the SABBATH DAY, to KEEP IT HOLY. [Why?> Because God made it Holy for mankind and commands us to keep it as a Holy day]
[9], Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
[10], But the SEVENTH DAY IS THE SABBATH of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: <WHY>
[11], For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the SEVENTH DAY: wherefore the LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH, and HALLOWED IT.

SABBATH H7676 שַׁבָּת shabbath
(shab-bawth') n-e. 1. intermission, a period of temporary rest.2. (specifically) the Sabbath, the seventh day being the day of rest.[intensive from H7673]KJV: (+ every) Sabbath. Root(s): H7673 Now who did God make the 7th day a Holy day for? Is he making that day a Holy day for himself? Of course NOT God is already Holy. He has made the day for MANKIND as a HOLY DAY.

Who was the SABBATH made for? Let’s see what Jesus says…

MARK 2:17 [27], And he said unto them, THE SABBATH WAS MADE FOR MAN, and not man for the Sabbath.

The Sabbath was made for WHO? The Sabbath was made for MAN. So here we have the God of creation telling us why the 7th Day was made a Holy day. It was made for MANKIND [Not the Jews]

STRONGS Greek MAN
G444 ἄνθρωποςanthropos (an'-thrō-pos) n.
1. (literally) man†-visage (i.e. a man-faced being, a man who has visibly come of age).
2. (concretely, in Hebrew) a clay being (a classification of beings made in the image of God, who made them male and female). 3. (generically, in English) a human being. 4. (indefinitely) a certain man (i.e. someone). [from G435 and ops “the countenance” (from G3700)] KJV: certain, man Root(s): G435, G3700

So the Sabbath was made for Human beings; clay beings (we are made out of the dust); male and female

So God made the 7th day of the week a HOLY day and blessed it for MAN this now ties in very nicely with the 4th commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) God says that it is a specific day which is the 7TH DAY OF THE WEEK that he has made to be a HOLY DAY.

Jesus says it was made Holy in the creation week for mankind. All scriptures connect and are in harmony. Genesis where God made the Day a HOLY DAY;

God’s 4th commandment to His people that says to REMEMBER the Sabbath day to KEEP it a HOLY DAY and Jesus stating that the Sabbath was made for MANKIND (Human beings; male and female).

Now if God made the Sabbath for mankind then obviously Adam and Eve had the Sabbath. The GREEK Word for MAN G444 ἄνθρωποςanthropos (an'-thrō-pos) n. is a clay being (a classification of beings made in the image of God, who made them male and female).

There is only two people made out of clay (dust) and that is Adam and Eve
.

Yep God's Sabbath was given to mankind in the Garden of Eden and made in the Creation WEEK. Only God's Word is true and we should BELIEVE it. Those that do not BELIEVE God's Word are UNBELIVERS and UNBELIEVERS have no part in God's Kingdom.

ALL of God's LAW (10 Commandments) are repeated all through the OLD and NEW TESTAMENT scriptures and this is the teachings of JESUS and the APOSTLES. They are the standard of good and evil, sin and righteousness but they make nothing perfect. Salvation however is by faith alone in God's WORD by GRACE in the lives of those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD.

Thanks for your thoughts Jack, Hope this is helpful.

Whenever the born again disciples followed Jesus, abiding in union with Jesus,
they do as He does. Simple. No question.

Good point Jeff. Jesus is our example and Jesus and all of the disciples taught and obeyed God's LAW through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ and God's WORD which we are to live by.

Thanks Jeff, may God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

I did not think any clarifications were necessary. Your interpretation has very clear inconsistencies which I have clearly pointed out several times. Perhaps your interpretation needs to be reworked?

Sorry Jack, I may have missed this post but this was answered with scripture in the previous post. There is no inconsistancies. The scriptures show that God wrote the same commandments on a second set of tables of stone with his own finger as shown in...

EXODUS 34:1 [1], And the LORD said unto Moses, Cut out two tables of stone like unto the first: and I WILL WRITE UPON THESE TABLES THE WORDS THAT WERE IN THE FIRST TABLES, which you broke

These were the same commandments that he spoke with his own voice in Exodus 20:1-17.

I think you may be getting some of the directions God gave to Moses to write down in the MOSAIC BOOK of the Covenant mixed up with the 10 Commandment (Exodus 20;1-17). Together it was both God's LAW (10 Commandments written on stone) and the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT that made of the OLD COVENANT.

The day of Christian worship was established by the Church through tradition by the authority given to the apostles by Christ in Matthew 18:19. Christians gathered on Sunday for worship beginning prior to 100 AD.

See also the authority of the apostles to "bind and loose". That authority given to the apostles has been handled down to their successors for 2000 years now.

Please Google "binding and loosing". There is a very good article on that Jewish concept at wikipedia.

Hi there HTacianas, you are correct.

Many do not know that there is not one scripture in all of God's WORD that says that God's 4th commandment as been Abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day.

This is a man-made teaching and tradition handed down by the Catholic Church to protestantism and is a made-made traditions and teaching that has lead many to break the commandments of God.

Here is some interesting scriptures from Jesus stating that if we choose to follow the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God we are not really following God.

MATTHEW 15:3-9 [3],
[3], But he answered and said unto them, WHY DO YOU TRANSGRESS THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD BY YOUR TRADITION?
[4], For GOD COMMANDED, saying, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.
[5], BUT YOU SAY, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift devoted to God, whatsoever you might have received from me;
[6], And honors not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment of God void by your tradition.
[7], You hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
[8], These people draw near unto me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
[9], BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING FOR DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN.

We are not following God if we choose to follow man-made teachings and traditions that break the commandments of God.

Who should we choose? The teachings and traditions of men handed down by the Roman Catholic Church or the Word of God?

Thanks for your thoughts HTacianas, may God help you as you seek him in his Word.

These are not "the traditions of men" as you would have us believe, but are the teachings of the Church with the full authority of Jesus Christ. And neither you, nor Ellen White, nor the SDAs have the authority to set those teachings aside.

If you claim that authority for yourself, please tell me what you base that on.

Hi HTacianas,

The Romans Catholic Church does not have any authority to set aside the teachings of God's WORD. The words of Jesus in MATTHEW 15:3-9 would disagree with you here. There is not one scripture in all of God's WORD that says God's 4th Commandment has been Abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day.

God's 4th Commandment is the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH which God's WORD says is the "LORD'S DAY" (Revelation 1:10; Matthew 12:8).

It is God himself that has blessed and set the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH aside as a HOLY DAY and has commanded his followers to keep this day as a HOLY DAY and it is Jesus himself that is the Lord of the SABBATH (Exodus 20:8-11; Revelation 1:10; Matthew 12:8; Mark 2:27-28).

No one has the right to set aside the Word of God in order to follow man-made teachings and traditions that break the commandments of God. Jesus says those that do this are not following God and it is vain to think so (Matthew 15:3-9). Simply ignoring God's WORD in this matter does not make God's WORD dissappear.

This teaching of Jesus here in relation to following man made traditions (Matthew 15:3-9) links into the rest of God's WORD in the OLD TESTAMENT and NEW TESTAMENT scriptures throughout the bible and the OP here that teach all of God's 10 commandments including God's 4th Commandment are a requirement of Christians through faith in the God's WORD (Matthew 4:4; John 5:24; 1 John 2:3-4).

God's 4th Commandment is one of the 10 commandments that give us a KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is if broken (Romans 3:20; 7:7; James 2:11; 1 John 3:4). Just like any of the other 10 commandments if knwoingly broken we stand guilty before God of sin.

Many follow the Catholic teaching and tradition of Sunday worship over the 4th Commandment out of ignorance as they do not know any better or know God's WORD.

In times of ignorance God winks at but now ,<when a KNOWLEDGE of the truth has come> calls all men everywhere to REPENT (FOLLOW) (Acts 17:30-31).

Only God's WORD is true and we should BELIEVE and FOLLOW it over the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God.

If we are to follow you on this, we'd also have to have all of our sons circumcised, as the Word of God requires it. It was only a group of men who set it aside.

Hi HTacianas, it is God's WORD we are to BELIEVE and FOLLOW no one else. We can choose to follow God's WORD or not all are free to choose for themselves who they will follow. We all answer to God alone come judgment day where we will all be judged by the Word of God (John 12:47-48).

Why do you feel the need to bring up CIRCUMCISION as it is not one of God's 10 commandments? Therefore is not an example for comparison. This was a Shadow law from the OLD COVENANT pointing to the NEW HEART under the NEW COVENANT from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT. These SHADOW laws of the OLD TESTAMENT were prophetic in nature and pointed to Jesus as our great sacrifice and God's plan of salvation.

SCRIPTURE SUPPORT HERE CLICK ME (Part 1-6).

The Shadows are fulfilled in Christ and why we no longer need to offer sin offerings every time we sin. The Sanctuary laws of the levitical priesthood all point to the Heavenly and our new High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary (Hebrews 7-10).

The Shadow laws from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT are not God's ETERNAL LAW (10 commandments) however. God's ETERNAL LAW is the very standard of GOOD and EVIL, Sin and RIghtousness that give us a knowledge of SIN if broken under the OLD and NEW COVENANT and the very standard of the judgment to come in the NEW COVENANT (James 2:8-12). You are getting your shadow laws mixed up with those that are God's eternal laws that give us a KNOWLEDGE of what sin is (Romans 3:20).

Hope this helps.

I disagree with you. It is not God's word you are following but rather the teachings of a person who never had the authority to be a teacher.

And I am only offering circumcision to you as an example of your own logic. The word of God requires male children to be circumcised. A group of men decided we didn't have to do it.

I disagree with you. It is not God's word you are following but rather the teachings of a person who never had the authority to be a teacher.

Indeed you are free to believe and do as you wish. I do not judge you. These are God's WORD'S not mine. God's WORD has been provided to you. You can choose to BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORDS or choose to follow your own words. Only God's WORD is true and we should BELIEVE and FOLLOW it over the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God. You are free to do as you wish. Your salvation is between you and God come judgment day, as it is written...

JOHN 12:47-48 [47], And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.[48], He that rejects me, and receives not my words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day

And I am only offering circumcision to you as an example of your own logic. The word of God requires male children to be circumcised. A group of men decided we didn't have to do it.

The Shadow laws of the MOSIAC BOOK of the COVENANT including your example of CIRCUMCISION are fulfilled in Christ and why we no longer need to offer sin offerings every time we sin. The Sanctuary laws of the levitical priesthood all point to the Heavenly and our new High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary (Hebrews 7; Hebrews 8; Hebrews 9; Hebrews 10).

SCRIPTURE SUPPORT HERE CLICK ME (Part 1-6).

The Shadow laws from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT are not God's ETERNAL LAW (10 commandments). God's LAW (10 Commandments) are the very standard of GOOD and EVIL, Sin and RIghtousness that give us a knowledge of SIN if broken under the OLD and NEW COVENANT and the very standard of the judgment to come (Romans 3:20; James 2:8-12).

Using the example of CIRCUMCISION you are only showing that you are getting your shadow laws mixed up with those that are God's eternal laws that give us a KNOWLEDGE of what sin is (Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4).

To me only God's WORD is true and we should believe and follow it over the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

God's Sheep hear his Voice (the Word).

It would seem that God changed his mind between Exodus 20 and Exodus 34 and then changed it back in Deuteronomy 5

Hi JackRT,

God did not change the 10 Commandments. I think you may have mixed up some of the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT with God's 10 Commandments from Exodus and Deuteronomy. This can be seen in Exodus 34:1 where God told Moses he would re-write the first set of 10 Commandments on two new tables of stone.

May God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

This can be seen in Exodus 34:1 where God told Moses he would re-write the first set of 10 Commandments on two new tables of stone.

Which is what God did and called them the "ten commandments":

Exodus 34:1 The LORD said to Moses, Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No-one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.

Exodus 34:27 ........ And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

OLD TESTAMENT REFERENCE: "I am the LORD thy God, Which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." (Exodus 20:2-3)

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES
: Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. " (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8)

Good example of something in OT being quoted in the NT - specific

3. DO NOT USE GOD'S NAME IN VAIN
OLD TESTAMENT REFERENCE: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES: "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (Matthew 6:9; Luke 11:2)

Not even remotely a quote of the OT prohibition against taking God's name in vain.

Really? What do you make of
Exodus 34: 1 The LORD said to Moses, Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
and
Exodus 34:
28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant— the Ten Commandments.

It would seem that God changed his mind between Exodus 20 and Exodus 34 and then changed it back in Deuteronomy 5

God speaks audibly to all of Israel in Exodus 20,,, not in Exodus 34.

And in Deut 5 - Moses does not say "remember what God told me in secret in Ex 34... but rather -- remember what God spoke to you personally from Mt Sinai".

Ex 34 is not a rewrite of anything.

Hi LGW
Could you please expound on no. 4,
About keeping the Sabbath.
Why does scripture say that the Sabbath was made for man?
I read what you have in parentesis, but it sounds like it was made for man to rest.
Now Jesus is our rest.
??
Thanks.

No text says "Now Jesus is our rest"
No text says "Now we can ignore the commandments of God".
Isaiah 66:23 says that for all eternity after the cross "from Sabbath to Sabbath shall all mankind come before me to worship"

No wonder in Acts 18:4 "every Sabbath" both Jews and gentiles gather for Gospel preaching in the synagogue

As @LoveGodsWord knows very well, I battle with this.
I'm happy to believe that we will not be judged by our doctrine or dogma but by how we've lived our life, to the best of our ability. I do believe that Jesus came to show us how to bring the Kingdom of God on earth.

As to our rest... Jesus said:
Mathew 11:28-30
28“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Rest from what? Trying to be saved by doing only works, trying to follow each and every one of the 613 laws....without any power to. Now we have less laws since the civil and ceremonial laws have been abolished and only the moral laws remain. Some try to keep the O.T. laws also, but I don't see how they can be.

Acts also says that "they gathered on the first day of the week".
Acts 20:7

Now I know this might have been a special occasion since Paul was not going to be with them much longer.

I just am not convinced one way or the other. I pray God will forgive me if I'm breaking a commandment -- which I may well be.

Right now I'm not attending any church, but my holy day still seems to be Sunday.

Zzz Just change your day to the right day silly {God's day} :p

No point in taking a gamble on your salvation if God's 4th Commandment is one of the 10 Commandments that give us a knowledge of what sin is right (Romans 3:20)? and there is no scripture that says it has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day.

Love you sis . Your brother in Christ.

Nice to see you stranger.

PS.
I want to see you being more active here. I saw God using you at CC to share his Word about his LAW and Covenant to those who did not believe his Word.
