Could you please post the scripture?
If God created everything in 6 days AND RESTED on the 7th day...The seventh day is the day of rest. The day of rest is the Sabbath.

Sabbath [N] [E]

The origin of the Hebrew sabbat [t'B;v] is uncertain, but it seems to have derived from the verb sabat, meaning to stop, to cease, or to keep. Its theological meaning is rooted in God's rest following the six days of creation ( Gen 2:2-3 ). The Greek noun sabbat [savbbaton] translates the Hebrew noun sabbat [t'B;v]. The noun form is used primarily to denote the seventh day of the week, though it may occasionally refer to the Sabbath week ( Lev 23:15-16 ) at the end of every seven Sabbaths or fifty days, or the Sabbath year ( Lev 25:1-7 ) in which the land was to be at complete rest.

The Old Testament. The observance of the Sabbath is central to Jewish life. Of the eight holy days (Shabbat, the first and seventh days of Pesach, Shavout, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the first and eighth days of Succot) proscribed in the Torah, only the Sabbath is included in the Decalogue. Though not holier than other holy days like Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanah, the Sabbath is given special attention because of its frequency. Yet despite any significance that accrues on the basis of its frequency or inclusion in the Decalogue, its importance rests ultimately on its symbolic representation of the order of creation. For, according to the Genesis narrative, God himself rested on the seventh day, thus making it sacred ( Gen 2:1-2 ). For the pious Jew, keeping the Sabbath holy is a mitzvah, or duty, before God. Indeed, The Old Testament takes Sabbath observance so seriously that profaning it results in the death penalty ( Exod 31:14 ; 35:2 ; Num 15:32 ).

The meaning of the Sabbath institution comes to light against the background of several key facts. First, Exodus 20:8-11 makes a clear connection between the Sabbath day and the seventh day on which God the Creator rested. Sabbath observance therefore involves the affirmation that God is Creator and Sustainer of the world. To "remember the Sabbath" meant that the Jew identified the seven-day-a-week rhythm of life as belonging to the Creator.

Sabbath (n.)

Old English sabat "Saturday as a day of rest," as observed by the Jews, from Latin sabbatum, from Greek sabbaton, from Hebrew shabbath, properly "day of rest," from shabath "he rested." Spelling with -th attested from late 14c., not widespread until 16c.

The Babylonians regarded seventh days as unlucky, and avoided certain activities then; the Jewish observance might have begun as a similar custom. Among European Christians, from the seventh day of the week it began to be applied early 15c. to the first day (Sunday), "though no definite law, either divine or ecclesiastical, directed the change" [Century Dictionary], but elaborate justifications have been made. The change was driven by Christians' celebration of the Lord's resurrection on the first day of the week, a change completed during the Reformation.

The original meaning is preserved in Spanish Sabado, Italian Sabato, and other languages' names for "Saturday." Hungarian szombat, Rumanian simbata, French samedi, German Samstag "Saturday" are from Vulgar Latin sambatum, from Greek *sambaton, a vulgar nasalized variant of sabbaton. Sabbath-breaking attested from 1650s.

Question: "What does shabbat mean?"

Answer: Shabbat is the original Hebrew word for our English word sabbath. It comes from the root Shin-Beit-Tav and means “to cease, to end, to rest.” The word is invariably linked to the seventh day after the six days of creation, and that is how we see it used in the Old Testament.

Shabbat is the most important holy day on the Jewish calendar, though it is kept every week by observant Jews and some others, and not just once a year. God put great emphasis on the Sabbath, as it is referenced in Scripture numerous times, such as in Exodus 20:8–9—“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work” (see also Exodus 23:12 and Leviticus 26:2). Shabbat was so important that God imposed the death penalty on those who refused to observe it (Exodus 31:15).

Two themes govern Shabbat: to remember and to observe. It is a commemoration of God’s six-day creation of the universe (Exodus 20:8–11) and of being led out of Egyptian captivity (Deuteronomy 5:15). So, the Jewish observer also remembers that freedom comes with following God.

What you're doing is substituting another word. The word used in Genesis 2 is shabath, a verb. You read shabbath a noun. Please note the spelling.

But everyone feels they can just follow God by their own thinking. However, there is a way that seems right to a man but the end thereof is death. Many people just do their own thing and think God is leading them. But we have a more sure word of prophecy. The Spirit of God had written the New Testament through men of God and there are many, many many NT Commands given to us directly from Jesus and His followers. One can make a list of these commands and obey them. In fact, the Lord our God wants us to obey them. For Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15).
You make a relationship with God work and work based. The Christian life is more like a tree. It automatically bears fruit. It can't help itself. It makes no effort to bear fruit.

If you look at what Jesus says what we are to do, it's the same thing the law tells us to do, even Jesus takes it even further, that it's not only what we do but also what is going on in our heart.

  1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shall not have any gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, wife, or property.

Commandment 1 "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Matthew 4:10). "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and the great commandment" (Matthew 22:37). "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment" (Mark 12:30). "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Luke 4:8).

Commandment 2 "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Matthew 4:10). "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Luke 4:8). "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). "But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam...to eat things sacrificed to idols" (Revelation 2:14). "Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, because you allow...My servants to...eat things sacrificed to idols" (Revelation 2:20).

Commandment 3 "pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name" (Matthew 6:9). "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men" (Matthew 12:31). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts,...blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts ... blasphemy, pride, foolishness" (Mark 7:20-22).

Commandment 4 "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:11-12). "And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath" (Matthew 24:20); there would be no reason to pray this if the Sabbath was not going to be in existence. "And He said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath'" (Mk 2:27); this verse tells all who will see which day is the Lord's Day. "And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue" (Mark 6:2). "And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read" (Luke 4:16). "Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths" (Luke 4:31). "The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath...Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?" (Luke 6:5,9). "But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath...The Lord then answered him and said, 'Hypocrite...So ought not this woman...be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?'" (Luke 13:14-16). "'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?'...And they could not answer Him regarding these things" (Luke 14:3,6). "are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?" (John 7:23).
Why don't you provide the passage requiring the sabbath to be kept in the NT (new covenant)?
Commandment 5 "For God commanded saying, 'Honor your father and your mother' and 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death'" (Matthew 15:4). "Honor your father and your mother" (Matthew 19:19). "Honor your father and your mother" (Mark 7:10). "Honor your father and your mother" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Honor your father and your mother" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 6 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder', and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment" (Matthew 5:21-22). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not murder" (Matthew 19:18). "...murders...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:21,23). "Do not murder" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Do not murder" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 7 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery'. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:27-28). "But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 5:32). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...adulteries, fornications...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9). "You shall not commit adultery" (Matthew 19:18). "...adulteries, fornications...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:21,23). "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery" (Mark 10:11-12). "Do not commit adultery" (Mark 10:19). "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery" (Luke 16:18). "You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery" (Luke 18:20). "'Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery'...And Jesus said to her...'sin no more'" (John 8:4,11). "Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation" (Revelation 2:22).

Commandment 8 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...thefts...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not steal" (Mat 19:18). "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer', but you have made it a den of thieves" (Matthew 21:13). "...thefts...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:22-23). "Do not steal" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:... Do not steal" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 9 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord. But I say to you, do not swear at all" (Matthew 5:33-34). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...false witness...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not bear false witness" (Matthew 19:18). "Do not bear false witness" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Do not bear false witness" (Luke 18:20). "And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars" (Revelation 2:2).

Commandment 10 "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on" (Matthew 6:25). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "...covetousness...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:22-23).

From what you write you seem to be a 5-point Calvinist. Are you?

I study and follow Reformed Theology and I am working my way through the Institutes of the Christian Religion by Calvin.

I believe they somehow do, even they think God's decree is bigger than His love and mercy for mankind.

God's attributes work in perfect harmony with one another. God does have a sovereign decree for all things, but that does not nullify His love and mercy, nor does His love and mercy negate His sovereign decree. One attribute does not diminish at the cost of another attribute.

Generally, Calvinists have a very different way to understand God's love. It's more about the decree, than about love.

Some may state that, but as mentioned above, God's attributes work in perfect harmony with one another.

Personally I think the Calvinist view of God is destructive and unloving.

Can you demonstrate how?

God's love for the common man is dimished to almost nothing.

Based upon what? Need some specifics here.

The part I dislike most about Calvinism is the part of diminishing the work of the cross.

Specific examples and references?

From my perspective, I don't think this is the case at all. And often I find those who are against Calvinism base their view solely on what a Pastor or Teacher in their church may have told them in a subtle or gross misrepresentations of Calvinism, and not from actual study of the Bible and what Calvin actually wrote. I have also seen from those who disagree with Calvinism a complete unwillingness to read and study what the opposing side understands and believes. I am not saying this is your situation, but this is what I have witnessed.

I seek to understand what those who disagree with me understand and believe, and if one can demonstrate such a view from the whole body of scripture, in context and using proper exegesis and hermeneutics, by God's grace, I hope I am willing to change my perspectives and understanding. By God's grace, I pray my own presuppositions and traditions become subservient to the word of God. Do I do it perfectly? No. But I am being sanctified.

What you say is: There are 100 fishes dying on the beach. I pick up one and put it in the water. Then I go home and watch TV. I choose one fish right, but what about the others? Did I och didn't I choose them to die in the sun? Thinking the way you do, then I didn't choose those to die, since I only choose the one that I wanted to save. But really, I did choose death to the other fishes since I left them dying. Not doing anything is a choice.
Only a person can choose to accept the Messiah. We can't do anything to redeem (give you life) you.

I will agree that Jesus not only wanted us to keep the 10 commandments but he also added this commandment to the 10, to love fellow Christians like a family. Like someone said, before the law was of the letter, now the law is out of love.
Ah, so you admit the law has been changed here by addition. Now why don't you respond to John 13:34 with how being in compliance would mean violating the law. Jesus doesn't promote the law for salvation anywhere. I really like John 10 and John 15:10 to prove my point. There are many other passages I also use for the same reason.

If you are redeemed then it shows though your obedience of the commandments. If you live in sin you are not redeemed. It's not until we are born again we are redeemed.
No it doesn't show through keeping the law. I don't keep any of the law, but I do keep John 13:34. This is why I spend so much time here putting aside other things that need immediate attention for life function.

But how does one know they are being led by the Spirit vs. their own way of thinking?
This is why you need to follow the commands in the New Testament Scriptures.
These Scriptures were written by men of God under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.
They are your instructions on what to do.
Not desiring to obey them is kind of like rebelling against God - IMO.
Unless of course one does not believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God or something. I sure hope that is not the case.
Essentially you claim 1 can't know the voice of the Holy Spirit and we need to follow a written prescribed set of rules. The Holy Spirit won't lead 1 to evil.

Late here and I'm tired. Will get back to you tomorrow morning.
Just want to say that I see where we differ from the above.
You say the carnal nature, or sin nature, has been removed and replaced with His own.
I believe we still have the sin nature but it is kept under submission.
Tomorrow...
I believe we are still in our body of flesh which wars against the soul (the person we are).

The Hebrew word translated rested is shabath
שָׁבַת
and means to cease and desist. God didn't return to His work. There's no indication of a periodic rest such as the sabbath.
To cease and desist.
God rested.
Genesis 2:2
God rested from all the work He had done.
Which work?
ALL THE WORK?
I certainly hope not.
God rested from the work He had done from Genesis 1:1 up to the point of creating man.

Are you saying God rested from there forward??
Then what is holding up the universe?
Instead of posting Hebrew, which I don't know, just please say what you mean.

His statement is nothing more than failure to get the word left out. Often times our fingers fail to do what their told. So why don't you administer some of the grace in your moniker?
What are you talking about please?
He left out the word, what word?
You mean like, coke, grass, liquor.
I'm NOT ON ANYTHING, and his post was slanderous and I did practice my grace by not reporting him.

Hi, I'm American and I know your comments are tongue in cheek.

You also sound pretty upset with how things are going and, I must admit, am starting to lose touch with what's going on over there. Reading or watching the news just doesn't cut the mustard. There's no feel for what's happening culturally.

So yeah, we could get a divorce civilly and the attorneys could even make some money on the deal since most do so with animosity.

However, in God's eyes the couple will still be married.
And HE doesn't even charge taxes!

I guess you mean God is maintaining the universe. God made things to maintain themselves. I live in the country and have to fight nature or it takes over. If I don't trim the trees they get in the way of normal function. If I don't mow the ticks eat me and the dogs alive. Besides that I don't particularly care for weeds. If I don't protect the chickens the wild life will make dinner from them.

You make a relationship with God work and work based. The Christian life is more like a tree. It automatically bears fruit. It can't help itself. It makes no effort to bear fruit.

While I believe God does work through the true believer, they also have to cooperate with God. They still have free will and can sin and or do wrong. Hebrews 3:12-14 warns us by saying,

12 "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end." (Hebrews 3:12-14).

In other words, this warning above would not make any sense if what you say is true in the fact that a believer will always bring forth fruit (i.e. to do the right thing). For the warning says that we are not to be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin whereby it can cause us to have an evil heart of unbelief so as to depart from the living God. To put it to you another way, why warn us of something that is not possible?

The Bible also says,

"And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful" (Titus 3:14).

"His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." (Matthew 25:21).

"And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 25:30).

"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12).

Essentially you claim 1 can't know the voice of the Holy Spirit and we need to follow a written prescribed set of rules. The Holy Spirit won't lead 1 to evil.

Do you believe the Holy Spirit had written through men to write the New Testament and that we can 100% trust every word of it in what it says?

If so, then the many commands in the New Testament should be your guide and not your own thoughts alone. In the early formation of the church (while the Scriptures of the NT were being formed), I believe the Spirit was working closely with those believers who came in close contact with Christ. Eventually, the Word of God spread in written form more and more. I believe today that if a person is not following the New Testament commands in the Bible, they are going against God. We cannot do our own thing outside of what the Word of God says. Granted, there are liberal Christians out there who believe otherwise (of course). I surely hope that you are not one of them who says that we do not have to obey the New Testament (Which would naturally include obeying the Commands in the NT).

Jesus says,
"If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love" (John 15:10).

Most people today.... they really hate that verse above here. I have seen a street preacher use it once and it upsets many (Including Christians of the popular churches of today).
