The 7th day and the sabbath day aren't the same thing. If it were Moses would have used the word "sabbath" in Genesis 2. The 4th commandment says "wherefore" in Exodus and "therefore" in Deuteronomy. Both indicate cause. Neither say "is."
Could you please post the scripture?
If God created everything in 6 days AND RESTED on the 7th day...The seventh day is the day of rest. The day of rest is the Sabbath.

Sabbath [N] [E]

The origin of the Hebrew sabbat [t'B;v] is uncertain, but it seems to have derived from the verb sabat, meaning to stop, to cease, or to keep. Its theological meaning is rooted in God's rest following the six days of creation ( Gen 2:2-3 ). The Greek noun sabbat [savbbaton] translates the Hebrew noun sabbat [t'B;v]. The noun form is used primarily to denote the seventh day of the week, though it may occasionally refer to the Sabbath week ( Lev 23:15-16 ) at the end of every seven Sabbaths or fifty days, or the Sabbath year ( Lev 25:1-7 ) in which the land was to be at complete rest.

The Old Testament. The observance of the Sabbath is central to Jewish life. Of the eight holy days (Shabbat, the first and seventh days of Pesach, Shavout, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the first and eighth days of Succot) proscribed in the Torah, only the Sabbath is included in the Decalogue. Though not holier than other holy days like Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanah, the Sabbath is given special attention because of its frequency. Yet despite any significance that accrues on the basis of its frequency or inclusion in the Decalogue, its importance rests ultimately on its symbolic representation of the order of creation. For, according to the Genesis narrative, God himself rested on the seventh day, thus making it sacred ( Gen 2:1-2 ). For the pious Jew, keeping the Sabbath holy is a mitzvah, or duty, before God. Indeed, The Old Testament takes Sabbath observance so seriously that profaning it results in the death penalty ( Exod 31:14 ; 35:2 ; Num 15:32 ).

The meaning of the Sabbath institution comes to light against the background of several key facts. First, Exodus 20:8-11 makes a clear connection between the Sabbath day and the seventh day on which God the Creator rested. Sabbath observance therefore involves the affirmation that God is Creator and Sustainer of the world. To "remember the Sabbath" meant that the Jew identified the seven-day-a-week rhythm of life as belonging to the Creator.

Sabbath (n.)

Old English sabat "Saturday as a day of rest," as observed by the Jews, from Latin sabbatum, from Greek sabbaton, from Hebrew shabbath, properly "day of rest," from shabath "he rested." Spelling with -th attested from late 14c., not widespread until 16c.

The Babylonians regarded seventh days as unlucky, and avoided certain activities then; the Jewish observance might have begun as a similar custom. Among European Christians, from the seventh day of the week it began to be applied early 15c. to the first day (Sunday), "though no definite law, either divine or ecclesiastical, directed the change" [Century Dictionary], but elaborate justifications have been made. The change was driven by Christians' celebration of the Lord's resurrection on the first day of the week, a change completed during the Reformation.

The original meaning is preserved in Spanish Sabado, Italian Sabato, and other languages' names for "Saturday." Hungarian szombat, Rumanian simbata, French samedi, German Samstag "Saturday" are from Vulgar Latin sambatum, from Greek *sambaton, a vulgar nasalized variant of sabbaton. Sabbath-breaking attested from 1650s.

Question: "What does shabbat mean?"

Answer: Shabbat is the original Hebrew word for our English word sabbath. It comes from the root Shin-Beit-Tav and means “to cease, to end, to rest.” The word is invariably linked to the seventh day after the six days of creation, and that is how we see it used in the Old Testament.

Shabbat is the most important holy day on the Jewish calendar, though it is kept every week by observant Jews and some others, and not just once a year. God put great emphasis on the Sabbath, as it is referenced in Scripture numerous times, such as in Exodus 20:8–9—“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work” (see also Exodus 23:12 and Leviticus 26:2). Shabbat was so important that God imposed the death penalty on those who refused to observe it (Exodus 31:15).

Two themes govern Shabbat: to remember and to observe. It is a commemoration of God’s six-day creation of the universe (Exodus 20:8–11) and of being led out of Egyptian captivity (Deuteronomy 5:15). So, the Jewish observer also remembers that freedom comes with following God.

Part of the problem some may have in this issue about the 10 is understanding that the 10 or even 613 can tell us how to love our neighbor and love God. There is not a book large enough to enumerate the many variables involved in our daily walk in which we should love. The one and only way to learn how to love is to let love, God, live within us.

If we love as God called us into, the law has been fulfilled. Don't look to a list, look to the Spirit of God.

Good! I was hoping these would be what you meant. So many refer to the Ten Commandments and keeping the Sabbath Day.

If you look at what Jesus says what we are to do, it's the same thing the law tells us to do, even Jesus takes it even further, that it's not only what we do but also what is going on in our heart.

  1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shall not have any gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, wife, or property.

Commandment 1 "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Matthew 4:10). "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and the great commandment" (Matthew 22:37). "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment" (Mark 12:30). "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Luke 4:8).

Commandment 2 "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Matthew 4:10). "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve" (Luke 4:8). "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). "But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam...to eat things sacrificed to idols" (Revelation 2:14). "Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, because you allow...My servants to...eat things sacrificed to idols" (Revelation 2:20).

Commandment 3 "pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name" (Matthew 6:9). "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men" (Matthew 12:31). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts,...blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts ... blasphemy, pride, foolishness" (Mark 7:20-22).

Commandment 4 "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:11-12). "And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath" (Matthew 24:20); there would be no reason to pray this if the Sabbath was not going to be in existence. "And He said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath'" (Mk 2:27); this verse tells all who will see which day is the Lord's Day. "And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue" (Mark 6:2). "And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read" (Luke 4:16). "Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths" (Luke 4:31). "The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath...Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?" (Luke 6:5,9). "But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath...The Lord then answered him and said, 'Hypocrite...So ought not this woman...be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?'" (Luke 13:14-16). "'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?'...And they could not answer Him regarding these things" (Luke 14:3,6). "are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?" (John 7:23).

Commandment 5 "For God commanded saying, 'Honor your father and your mother' and 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death'" (Matthew 15:4). "Honor your father and your mother" (Matthew 19:19). "Honor your father and your mother" (Mark 7:10). "Honor your father and your mother" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Honor your father and your mother" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 6 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder', and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment" (Matthew 5:21-22). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not murder" (Matthew 19:18). "...murders...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:21,23). "Do not murder" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Do not murder" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 7 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery'. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:27-28). "But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 5:32). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...adulteries, fornications...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9). "You shall not commit adultery" (Matthew 19:18). "...adulteries, fornications...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:21,23). "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery" (Mark 10:11-12). "Do not commit adultery" (Mark 10:19). "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery" (Luke 16:18). "You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery" (Luke 18:20). "'Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery'...And Jesus said to her...'sin no more'" (John 8:4,11). "Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation" (Revelation 2:22).

Commandment 8 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...thefts...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not steal" (Mat 19:18). "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer', but you have made it a den of thieves" (Matthew 21:13). "...thefts...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:22-23). "Do not steal" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:... Do not steal" (Luke 18:20).

Commandment 9 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord. But I say to you, do not swear at all" (Matthew 5:33-34). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...false witness...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "You shall not bear false witness" (Matthew 19:18). "Do not bear false witness" (Mark 10:19). "You know the commandments:...Do not bear false witness" (Luke 18:20). "And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars" (Revelation 2:2).

Commandment 10 "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on" (Matthew 6:25). "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20). "...covetousness...All these evil things come from within and defile a man" (Mark 7:22-23).

But everyone feels they can just follow God by their own thinking.
Yes, but their own thinking is not the Holy Spirit. At some point we will all have the answer for what we have done, our own thinking won't help much.
However, there is a way that seems right to a man but the end thereof is death.
Trying to obey a list of laws.
Many people just do their own thing and think God is leading them. But we have a more sure word of prophecy. The Spirit of God had written the New Testament through men of God and there are many, many many NT Commands given to us directly from Jesus and His followers.
The list doesn't scratch the surface of what we face in our Christian walk. Just as the Spirit led men to write certain things down, no one can understand without that Spirit's guidance.
One can make a list of these commands and obey them. In fact, the Lord our God wants us to obey them.
If one would love by the Spirit, one would know without the list, just as Abraham did.

For Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15).[/QUOTE]
Then embrace the Spirit of God and let him lead you to all truth.

No. God does not choose who goes to Hell, directly or indirectly. Since man is naturally born with a sinful nature, man is already condemned. What is amazing is that God saves anyone at all.

John 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

What you say is: There are 100 fishes dying on the beach. I pick up one and put it in the water. Then I go home and watch TV. I choose one fish right, but what about the others? Did I och didn't I choose them to die in the sun? Thinking the way you do, then I didn't choose those to die, since I only choose the one that I wanted to save. But really, I did choose death to the other fishes since I left them dying. Not doing anything is a choice.

Take a peak at John 13:34.

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Where is this found in the OT?

I will agree that Jesus not only wanted us to keep the 10 commandments but he also added this commandment to the 10, to love fellow Christians like a family. Like someone said, before the law was of the letter, now the law is out of love.

I don't get your point, unless you mean we are still wicked and not redeemed. I'm redeemed and declared righteous by God. See Romans 4.

If you are redeemed then it shows though your obedience of the commandments. If you live in sin you are not redeemed. It's not until we are born again we are redeemed.

Hebrews 7:12 says the Law has changed.

Jesus is primarily referring to His New Covenant teachings or commands and not the 10 alone. Yes, 9 out of the 10 Commands in the 10 Commandments (Minus the Sabbath) have been repeated in the New Testament for us, but the Lord was referring to the commands given by Him and His followers (like Peter, James, Paul, etc.).

Also, the Old Covenant Commands was more than just the 10. There were 615 Commands in the Law of Moses. At the time Jesus said these words in John 14:15, they would have been a mixture of certain Old Covenant Laws that were still in effect and the Pre-Cross teachings He gave us. Some of these OT Laws were changed even before the cross by Jesus Christ Himself.

For example, Jesus said,
38 "Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:38-39).

But after Jesus died upon the cross, the Old Covenant was no more and many of it's laws (not all of them) do not apply anymore. For the Old Law (as a whole or package deal) is dead and no more.

"we are not under the law," (Romans 6:15).
"ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ;" (Romans 7:4).
"But now we are delivered from the law," (Romans 7:6).
"In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away." (Hebrews 8:13).
7 "But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious." (2 Corinthians 3:7-11).

But just because the Old Law is no more as a whole or package deal does not mean we are not under laws from God. We are under a New Covenant, with New Commands.

"But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter." (Romans 7:6).

3 "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing," (1 Timothy 6:3-4).

14 "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie." (Revelation 22:14-15).

Jesus's sacrifice and or blood started a New Covenant. We are now officially under the New Covenant commands. Granted, there are some "Moral Laws" like inappropriate behavior with animals, etc. that are not mentioned in the New Testament (But it is condemned in the Old Testament Law) that still applies obviously. But we as believers primarily look to the pages of the New Testament to obey God and not the pages of the Old Testament. The Old Law is only good if one uses it lawfully (See 1 Timothy 1:8).

I see what you say, but which of the 10 are we not keeping if we are keeping the commands of Jesus?

Quit flirting Jason...jk :)

Well, I am happily married to the woman of my dreams (Who is a Christian). I said that poster: "God's Grace 101" was my sister. A sister means they are family and not a romantic interest. I also send blessings to my fellow brothers, as well. In my opinion, the joke is not nice, funny, and nor is it appreciated. Jokes in my opinion is when they can be funny and yet not cause harm to another in any kind of way.

I see what you say, but which of the 10 are we not keeping if we are keeping the commands of Jesus?

The Saturday Sabbath is not repeated as a command in the New Testament. Sure, we may see some believers keep the Sabbath, but it is never given to us as a commandment in the New Testament. In fact, Paul says that we are not to judge according to Sabbaths or holy days (See Colossians 2). Yet, in the OT, a man who collected sticks on the Sabbath was stoned to death. So if this command is still that important, surely it would be re-stressed in the New Covenant. Granted, I am not saying that you cannot keep the Saturday Sabbath (From sundown Friday to sundown Saturday); It is simply no longer a binding command anymore.

Also, again. There are more than just 10 in the Old Covenant. There were 615 Commands in the written Law of Moses. Many of these laws conflict with the commands given to us in the New Testament. Granted, some folks are imaginative and they find a creative way to try and resolve in seeking to obey all of the Old and all of the New, but it honestly does not work. Yes, it is true that the Moral Laws (like: "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not commit adultery," "Do not covet," etc.) are carried over or repeated in the New Testament, but that does not mean the ceremonial laws or judicial laws from the Old Law are carried over into the New Law. There is simply no indication of this. Many verses say the Old Law is no more. Hebrews 7:12 says the Law has changed. So we follow primarily the commands in the New Testament and not the Old.
