I’ve been looking for an icon of Nathan the Prophet. But I’ve never been able to find one. Do any exist?

probably, although since he doesn't have a book, you might find him in the dome around the pantokrator

You have St. Xenia! And you sell prints! I might have to be contacting you soon. My current icon of St. Xenia is about 1/2 x 3/4 " paper glued to aluminum, but I love her so she rides in my car with me. :)

I wanted to ask about one of your icons? I think it's the Archangel Michael, and it looks like he's holding a swaddled infant (a soul?) in his right hand, a sword in his left, and it looks like he's standing in water with a bottle with a piece of paper in it floating by his feet? Can I ask what that is depicting? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. Thanks!

This question popped into my head earlier whilst I was working.

How do iconographers create icons of saints from which we have no known images or records of how they appeared during their time on this earth?

(I don't know the answer from an iconographer's point of view, but I know sometimes they have been given faces through dreams.)

Strange I replied to your post yesterday and it disappeared...so I'll try again...

If you're interested I make pendants/ keyrings/ magnets etc on Zazzle. If you're interested in a particular icon on something let me know and I can make it.

That icon is a copy of the miraculous icon of Archangel Michael Panormitis on the island of Symi. You can throw a bottle into the sea anywhere in the world, with names and a "Tama" (vow) and it will reach the monastery. That is why I painted the bottle in the icon. He is holding a soul in his hand because he is known to help at the hour of death.

Oh I like Zazzle. If I remember right it's the invitations that come printed on nice paper.

Thank you for the info about the icon. I've never heard that story before. I think I'm going to have to read more. Very interesting!

Hello everyone!

My sweet wife is quite gifted by the Lord in her artistic ability. She is also very much drawn to the idea of developing her iconography skills. She has participated in 1 iconography workshop and she absolutely loved it! She has expressed her interested in finding someone to teach her iconography in a more intimate setting such as in an apprenticeship. We are currently located in Colorado but are not tethered here since we are renters. Relocation is not out of the question at all. I am not gun-ho about all of this since it's important to consult wise counsel and acknowledge the Lord in all our ways before making any decision, especially one such as this. Nevertheless, I would like to know what our options might be.

Anyone have some valuable information for us?

I also have a friend who is interested, and lives in a very remote place. She first became interested by attending a workshop. She has continued with workshops on a regular basis since then. One of her favorite teachers being a member who sometimes posts here on CF (but I'm afraid I sometimes get real names mixed up). I'll see if I can find an online link for you if you are interested. :)

If this is any help, I'm making iconography tutorials starting from drawing (which is the foundation of iconography, but is usually completely ignored) and progressing to painting. You can either study or support the project here. The tutorials will also eventually be available on Udemy and Skillshare.

Does anyone know what the name of this picture / painting is called at 1:43 of Mary ?

I'm wondering where he ever got the idea that St Anthony was Greek prior to learning that he was Egyptian? Perhaps the Serbians mistakenly thought he was Greek, but the synaxarion says no such thing.

It's a painting of a Roman Catholic Statue. I think entitled, "Our Lady of Graces"? It is not Orthodox, neither Eastern or Oriental.

Yeah, it’s the black and white picture on the floor.

Can the icons be painetd in any medium or are there specific acceptable mediums and supports?
Are there rituals and prayers involved in producing icons?
Are the icons believed to be charmed in some way or do they bestow something on the viewer?
Do you have to be Orthodox to create an authentic or acceptable icon?
Are the portraits of specific saints based on anything concrete (ancient interpretations of the same portrait?) or is there artistic license?
Can anyone model for a specific saint or should the model be Orthoodox?
Are there guidelines for any included symbolism?
Are there any Christian subjects or themes that are off limits?
Thanks in advance!

Haha ... I know the answers to a few maybe - but I would also create a thread of your own to discuss this. You could get into many nuances. I think you did well to place it here. Just make a duplicate thread as a new post in TAW if you would. Looking forward to replies. :)
