Focus on getting to know God/the Lord Jesus through "heart" experience, more than getting to know
about God/the Lord Jesus through "head" knowledge.
Pray as Jesus did "forgive them Lord, because they don't know what they're doing" whenever you feel wronged (immediately), so you never allow bitterness or vengeance or anger to grow cankers in your own heart. This includes all the things you think someone
should have said or done.) Live in the forgiveness you have received and pass it on freely as you received it. Never wait for a time when you think someone
deserves it.
Practice "your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" daily, as one important way to materialise the heavenly kingdom of God here and now, rather than dreaming of eventually "going to heaven" when you die.
Know that God loves you, he trusts and believes in you, his long term plan for you remains firm, even if you have to start moving on from a new point after every time you mess up - he never ever gives up on you. He has already gifted you beyond measure, and definitely beyond your comprehension. Now he wants to partner with you to make you all you can and were meant to be. Let him take the lead. Do not be afraid - he will never ask you to do something he thinks you cannot do, with the resources he has made available.
And if you believe that he loves everyone in the world as much as he loves you, then he is already ahead of you working in the lives of those you meet, and in some way you are part of his plan for them. So listen listen listen to them, and listen listen listen to the Holy Spirit to guide your speech (or silence) and your body language as you interact with others. Gain heart experience of your Lord by responding appropriately and immediately to what the Spirit says. If you are uncertain that the voice is the Spirit's, repond in faith. The result will confirm one way or another if it was. And you will be better able to recognise that voice again.
Promise yourself, and practice "
life-giving conversations" at all times and with all those you communicate with. Practice the art of encouragement.
Give people "flowers" before they die or move out of your life, rather than at their funeral. This is one important way of practicing a live-giving conversation.
Let the "joy of the Lord be your strength." This is not
your joy in him or in what he has done for you. This is
his joy in you. The Lord
delights in his people. Let that motivate you. Rejoice in the Lord always (that
is your joy) - because he rejoices in you. You love him because he loved you; you trust him because he trusted you. He has always been the initiator of every good thing. If God is for you, who can be against you?
One thing that really shook me and my priorities when I was almost 50 was when I read the question "Do you know of anyone who, on their deathbed, said '
I wish I had spent more time at the office?" * People and relationships are far more important than financial or career success or even fame.
Don't be discouraged by the constant stream of bad news. God is
still on the throne. And he will always find a way by which
all things (even the bad stuff) will work for the benefit of his loved ones. The only catch: he defines the benefits. But hey, if he gave his only Son for you, what would good would he possible deny you?
These are all things I wish I had understood in my heart, rather than only giving academic assent to in my head, when I was young. I would have been less dogmatic, more sensitive to others, and probably more effective in all aspects of my life.
