Death came into the world in the garden of Eden through sin, and since that time all of us are spiritually dead because of our separation from God, until we receive the life of Christ (the word of God, the same word that Adam and Eve rejected) and are born again.
Genesis 2:17
you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord
Ephesians 2:2-6
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live ... God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

When you follow Jesus you are no longer counted among the dead, for you have been resurrected with him and are no longer separated from God.
