Please read your history. Whether you like it or not the constitution, the supreme court housing the ten commandments are there for a reason. Because this gov was formed under the influence of the Hebrew law. I could site you verse upon verse to prove this. I'm personally so sick and tired of atheists and left wing nuts trying to change history to suit their beliefs. You have all had your time in the sun. Now its time to get back to the truth about history, God and the bible.

The supreme court has many examples of ancient laws on it's walls, including the code of Hammurabi which predates the 10 commandments by centuries. It is explicitly stated that the 10 commandments are there as a decorative piece only, as is every other display of ancient legal codes.

So, I restate my case, and it's you that needs to read up on your history... American Law is based on English Common Law. English common law descended from Roman Law.

The ironic thing is that you're the one trying to change history to suit your beliefs.

Mr Ellis, read the bible learn about the cultures back then. God chose to change slavery by changing mens hearts. You keep bringing up the same arguments and when given explanations you do not even try to learn or research from the information. what are you afraid of? Are you afraid that a Christian will come along and crack your wall of denial?

Where did God advocate changing slavery in the Bible?

The fact it was allowed in the first place makes him an immoral being, however he certainly never disallowed or outlawed slavery... it's clearly condoned under biblical law.

god is morality..... morality is defined by whatever that god is and whatever that god does

So, drowing the world in a massive act of genocide is something moral? Is this something we should do?

No, I'm asking you who you believe in? What you believe in. Who and what is it that you learn about life from? And this slavery thing?
Me? People, empathy caring for others, freedom, opportunities, leaning new things.
People on this site have tried to explain to you about slavery in the bible and you will not listen or read or study so you can understand. You are like a broken record with this slavery thing.
I apologise if I seem like I can't communicate on this issue, but the slavery content seems blatant. The Old Testiment allows for and even encourages killing civilians on conquered countries and taking slaves. Slavery is a great evil to me, and this is one of the issues that most of the Christian world agrees with me on.

Note especially that steeling a man TO SELL is indeed the whole point of the capital crime in direct contradiction to your continually inaccurate and insulting claims.

When you and yours come up with an economic system even a tenth as forward thinking and egalitarian as this, you feel free to spew some more filth about the Old Testament and slavery. As it is, your China and Mexico enslaving, backbiting, bank controlled non-democratic hierarchy is no moral high ground from which to be spewing your utter nonsense.
I don't claim that modern society is free from the evils of the past. I agree that people in the modern world and even in our cultures are still forced into unfair situations.

Shem.

What about them being able to leave AT ANY TIME. WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE?

What about the redistribution of ALL LAND, every 50 years, not to the government but as a moral imperative TO THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS, so as to minimize the need for any sort of servanthood to begin with?

Again, when you come within a thousand miles of this sort of progressive, democratic, individual-rights-promoting plan, you let me know.

The rest is just you popping off out of context claptrap trying to pretend the modern world does not have people being beaten and killed to force them to work harder for western interests. Your judgements are hypocritical in the extreme.
Can you point out to me where this information is coming from? Do these laws only apply to Israelites or to strangers as well?

I'm no bible scholar, but I do remember reading about kings with riches, armies and concubines... and no just among Israel's enemies.

But, to trientje and Shane both... please show me how the contexts of quotes I posted changes what they mean. I read that a master can beat his slaves, and that he owes the slave nothing once free.

If I'm wrong, please demonstrate it. Show me the biblical context which doesn't make owning and beating someone legal.

people say i contradict myself

I think the problem is that you don't explain yourself.

You seem to mostly post single lines with limited context, so people can't really tell what you mean; whether you understand; or if you are attempting to joke.

Who are you voting for & why?
I have already placed my vote for Obama. I vote for Obama because I believe in the social policies and ideologies of the Democratic party. I think that Obamacare is a wonderful concept - and yes, big fat liar Mittens saying he will repeal that act on his first day, does anyone believe that? Because he can't. Such arrogance. It is against my most deeply ingrained beliefs to ever vote for social conservatism, also known as the party of the millionaires. They have no concern for the non-millionaires in our society, which would be 99% of us.

That'll happen when someone comes and starts spewing anti-Christian hate filth and bile while the rest of you act like you don't realize anything is going on.
I jumped in and out of this thread. Quite often, I read the forums on my cell phone. I do realize what is going on in this thread. Ergo, my post to which you responded.

Do you wish for me to join your discussion on what The Bible has to say on human worth and slavery?

To be quite honest, I am not interested in getting into a General Apologetic discussion.

Using your logic that the Republican Party is for the 1% (i.e. millionaires), why do you think that a large percentage of the 99% are for Romney?

Those of the 99% who vote for Mittens are the same ones who post (or used to post) on my Facebook those ridiculous comments about how people on welfare should .. be drug tested .. shouldn't be allowed to vote .. shouldn't be allowed to eat ding dongs (that one is almost funny). They despise and loathe the poor, weak and needy. While I am fully cognizant that some who claim benefits do abuse the system (as do some who work for the government and also waste public funds), the vast majority who need benefits are clinging desperately to some kind of decent life. While they are clinging on, trying to find work, or whatever their circumstances - perhaps they are on disability benefits and cannot ever work - why should they undergo yet more humiliation (drug tests) and have the more fortunate members of the society decide that they cannot ever have a treat of any kind (ding dongs)? I pity those people who would like to humliate and degrade others. They evidently place no value on the poor, and they are always, always, always Republicans. It is a groupthink that disgusts me.

Thanks for the response. I have encountered that mindset from some Republicans.
