Wildlife officials move to feed Florida’s starving manatees

A federal judge rejected a state attempt to end a lawsuit involving manatee deaths in the Indian River Lagoon last week.

The lawsuit involves wastewater discharges there, alleging it has led to seagrass dying, and manatees dying from starvation.

The judge said a trial is needed to determine whether the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has violated the Endangered Species Act.

Experts said that it’s important to consider if there is a continuing ongoing violation of federal law.

Florida agency asks court to overturn judge's decisions on protecting manatees in northern Indian River Lagoon

Describing the case as having "exceptional importance," the Florida Department of Environmental Protection this week argued a federal appeals court should overturn decisions that required the agency to take a series of steps to protect manatees in the northern Indian River Lagoon.

[What's the name of your department again?]

Mendoza in April ruled the department violated the Endangered Species Act and followed in May with the order that included a moratorium on new septic tanks in the area and other measures, such as requiring the establishment of biomedical-assessment and supplemental-feeding programs for manatees in the area. Septic tanks discharge nitrogen that can cause harmful algae blooms in waterways.

Trump's Warrior Board

Hegseth (in the service of his boss) is purging the Senior ranks of the military.

In the spring, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth decided not to promote a senior Army officer who had led troops over five tours in Afghanistan and Iraq because Mr. Hegseth suspected, without evidence, that the officer had leaked sensitive information to the news media, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

When Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Sims II was cleared of the allegations, Mr. Hegseth briefly agreed to promote him, only to change course again early this month, the officials said. This time, Mr. Hegseth maintained that the senior officer was too close to Gen. Mark Milley, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff whom President Trump has accused of disloyalty.

Mr. Hegseth’s sudden reversal prompted a rare intervention from Gen. Dan Caine, the current chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He urged Mr. Hegseth to reconsider, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Well, we wouldn’t want the military to become politicized, would we?
So, only those loyal to the President should oughta get the good jobs!

Behold, the Lamb of God!

”The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” “Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ They said to Him, ‘Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’” (John 1:29,35-39 NASB1995)

Under the Old Covenant God had with his people Israel (Jews only), lambs were sacrificed for the atonement (payment) for sins. And this was something that had to be repeated over and over again. But when Jesus Christ, God the Son, gave his life up for us on that cross, he was the final and the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the world. For in his death he became sin for us so that when he died, our sins died with him, so that by faith in him we will now die to sin and live for God and obey him.

And John the Baptist had this revealed to him by God the Father that Jesus Christ was that sacrificial lamb of God sent by God to take away the sin of the world, i.e. to deliver the people of this world out of their slavery to sin so that, by faith in him, they will now die to sin and walk in obedience to the Lord in daily practice, in God’s power. And John the Baptist was called of God to prepare the hearts of the people for the coming of Jesus, so that by faith in him, they would forsake their sins and now walk in the ways of the Lord.

And because John the Baptist believed God, and he was faithful to the call of God on his life to be “a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said,” people began to follow Jesus, not many at first, but some, some of whom became his close disciples who then ministered along with him for about three years, the time of his ministry on the earth prior to his death, resurrection, and ascension back to heaven to be with God the Father, whereby he sent us his Spirit.

And I just love the progression of this here. One of the first to follow Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. And he said to his brother Simon, “We have found the Messiah” (the Christ). And Andrew brought Simon to Jesus, and Jesus named him Peter. The next day Jesus found Philip, and he called him to follow him, and Philip did. Then Philip found Nathanael, and he told him about Jesus, and he invited him to come and see the Lord. And on and on it went, and people believed in Jesus Christ as their Lord (vv. 39-51).

And as I was thinking about all of this, what came to mind is how we don’t really know how what we do might impact one person who then impacts others for Christ who then impacts others for Christ. We may reach one person who comes to Christ, who then is on fire for the Lord, who then shares his or her (their) faith with someone else who then may share their faith, and so on and so forth. Especially if our ministry is on the internet, we may have no knowledge of how God is using us, but he is, if we are of him.

So, the encouragement here is to be faithful to the call of God to be sharing the truth of the gospel with the people of the world, and then to trust God with the results. And the truth we should be sharing is what Jesus taught and what his New Testament apostles taught, in their full and correct biblical context. For so many people today are teaching a diluted and altered “gospel” that makes no requirements for death to sin and walks of obedience to our Lord as part of faith which saves. So, please know the truth.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]

Ellen White: Meat eating weakens moral powers

Over two years ago there was a thread looking at statements by Ellen White regarding the Israelite diet. This thread is a more focused part 2, looking at one aspect--the claim that meat eating weaken's moral powers.

Here are the statements:

The Signs of the Times, January 6, 1876, Art. A

God did not withhold meat from the Hebrews in the wilderness simply to show his authority, but for their good, that they might preserve physical and moral strength. He knew that the use of animal food strengthens the animal passions and enfeebles the intellect. He knew that the gratification of the appetite of the Hebrews for flesh-meats, would weaken their moral powers, and induce such an irritable disposition that the vast army would become insubordinate, that they would lose the high sense of their moral obligations, and refuse to be controlled by the wise laws of Jehovah. Violence and rebellion would exist among them, making it impossible for them to be a pure and happy people in the land of Canaan. God knew what was best for the children of Israel, therefore he deprived them in a great measure of flesh-meats. Satan tempted them to consider this unjust and cruel. He caused them to lust after forbidden things, because he saw that through the indulgence of perverted appetite they would become carnally-minded and could be easily brought to do his will; the lower organs would be strengthened, while the intellectual and moral powers would be weakened.

Councils for the Church, 228

Upon their settlement in Canaan, the Israelites were permitted the use of animal food, but under careful restrictions which tended to lessen the evil results. The use of swine's flesh was prohibited, as also of other animals and of birds and fish whose flesh was pronounced unclean. Of the meats permitted, the eating of the fat and the blood was strictly forbidden. Only such animals could be used for food as were in good condition. No creature that was torn, that had died of itself, or from which the blood had not been carefully drained, could be used as food. By departing from the plan divinely appointed for their diet, the Israelites suffered great loss. They desired a flesh diet, and they reaped its results. They did not reach God's ideal of character or fulfill His purpose. -CCH 228

As can be seen from the above, Ellen White indicated that eating meat reduced moral power among the Israelites. She indicated they departed from the plan appointed for their diet, and suffered loss, not reaching God's ideal of character or fulfilling His purpose.

However, these claims do not match up with Scripture

God indicated the Israelites may eat meat, according to the blessing of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 12:15 “However, you may slaughter and eat meat within all your gates, whatever your heart desires, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean may eat of it, of the gazelle and the deer alike.

God said that if they were faithful He would bless the Israelites with grass so that the Israelites might eat the livestock and be filled.

Deuteronomy 11:15 And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled.’

God required the Israelites to eat meat in the Passover.

Exodus 12:8 8 Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. (NKJV)

God gave regular portions of the sacrifices to the priests.

Leviticus 7:31 And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. 32 Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33 He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. 34 For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ”

God outlined the peace offering which involved eating meat from the animal.

Leviticus 19:5 ‘And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord, you shall offer it of your own free will. 6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, and on the next day. And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire.

God provided Elijah meat.

1Ki 17:6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

Jesus provided fish to His disciples, and to the multitudes.

Joh 21:12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

Jesus ate the Passover, and had His disciples arrange for it, and eat it with Him.

Luke 22:14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer

Jesus fed the multitude with fish.

Matthew 15:35 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. 36 And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. 37 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.

Jesus called a fish a good gift, which it would not be if it weakened moral powers.

Luk 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

It is unbiblical to claim that Jesus would give food to people that weakened their moral powers, and had "evil results."
Wow!!!!

I did read some of Ms. Ellen White's books thirty or forty years ago and basically I was impressed.

At that time I could not leave the WWCG and join the SDA but I do thank you for these very interesting quotations from her.

How people choose a church

The Pew Research Centre conducted a poll a few years ago asking people why they chose the church they did, after for example moving to a different area. The most common reasons were the quality of the sermon, the welcome they got, how much they liked the style of worship, and the location of the church. Well behind these was the specific teachings of the church.
So what I’d like to hear people’s views about is whether “doctrinal purity” is, or even ought to be, a consideration in people’s choice of a church. If it’s not, doesn’t that make the religious wars of past centuries quite pointless, and no church should claim to be “the one true church” or whatever?
I’d like to start of my POV with the fact that I used to belong to an unorthodox Christian church for most of my life till I came to CF 21 years ago. After a year of being here, and with the help of drstevej, who became a good friend, and God, I was able to see through the false teachings and became a Bible-believing Christian. And shortly after that went on staff here for 8 years, being assigned as manager of the Theology section of the board (yep, they chose the newest Christian on staff to head the Theology team), but that forced me to quickly learn many “…ologies” as well as heresies, etc. (All of this does factor in.)

When I started looking for a church, drstevej advised me to find one that focused on teaching, and that led me to one of the largest churches in my area. The pastor grew his church of 30-40 into a church of about 1500. Between working at CF and attending this church, I learned a huge amount! But the elders wanted to take the church in a different direction, they wanted to become a seekers church, so they bid adieu to the pastor and hired someone more interested in their new direction. I left at that time (I had been there about 11 years at that point). I briefly went to an independent Baptist church that kind of absorbed the people who left around the same time I did, but then I moved far enough away that I couldn’t attend on a regular basis.

I looked around my new neighborhood to see what churches were there, and thought about what I wanted out of a church, and selected another independent Baptist church and made an appointment to talk with the pastor about who I was, what my background was and what I wanted out of a church, and decided that I would attend there. I believe that if you have specific beliefs, they should blend with the church’s beliefs or you might get frustrated with what you might believe to be less than Biblical teachings being taught. It is a church I can be active in, compared to the mega church where I just went and sat in the back and left immediately and nobody knew me. I needed that for a while, but now I need to participate in an active way.

ABCs of 5 letter words (10)

Curiously, heaven has six letters. Given the negative association of the number six in the Bible, it is interesting that the English word for heaven has six letters (hell, of course, has four letters which is equally negative, but not in a biblical sense, but in relation to the Chinese culture where it is the most unlucky number because the word for four in Chinese sounds the same as the word for death).

So, in order to fit the parameters of this thread, which requires five letter words, we can convert heaven to -

Redefining The Middle Ages

Part one (of two) I seek to argue the Middle Ages proper ended during the 14th century. The 14th century was the most transformative since the B.C/A.D divide and placed us on the path to modernity. This article explores the changes in the treatment of women, heretics, and witches, along with issues of racism and the plague. All these groups were negatively affected during and after the 14th century.
Often overlooked in our Western vacuum is the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire which played an important role creating an eastern church diaspora of sorts and a giant download of Byzantine scholars and texts with it. This and the earlier printing press and subsequent critical Greek NT helped jump start the reformation movement something that was still brewing in 14th century. The printing press is invented mid-14th century but major cultural shifts and the reformation I think are too bound with the reformation that the place marker should be the 15th.

Venezuelan Baseball Team denied entry into US

Olympic teams are official representatives of nations. In many of them they are supported by a ministry for sport. Nerd-fest is not the same kind of event unless there are international Bat'leth teams sponsored by nations attending.
Seems like a bit of an unhealthy attachment to sports
(if governments are going to have ministries dedicated to it and it's considered so important that it supersedes other diplomatic interests)

...but hey, I was never really all that into sports.

Make Straight The Way

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” (John 1:19-23 NASB1995)

This was God’s calling upon the life of John the Baptist in preparation for Jesus’ ministry. But truthfully, this is God’s calling upon all of us who believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives. We are all called of God to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. We are all to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth in taking the message of the gospel to the people of the world, and via us setting the example before them as to how this life should be lived.

We are all to be the Lord’s witnesses and those who are sharing the message of the gospel with the people of the world, and in teaching them to repent (die to sin) and to obey our Lord’s commandments. And we are to be those who make straight (upright, righteous, godly) the way of the Lord, i.e. the way of salvation from sin and eternal life with God. We are not to be those who cheapen the message of the gospel to make others feel good about themselves, but we are to teach dying to sin and walks of obedience to God.

[Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 28:18-20; John 4:31-38; John 13:13-17; John 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 26:18; Romans 10:14-15; Ephesians 5:11-14; 1 Peter 2:9,21; 1 John 2:6]

Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:27-30 NASB1995)
And Jesus said to Paul (then Saul): “I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’” (Acts 26:17-18 NASB1995)
And Paul wrote: “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19-21 NASB1995)
Paul wrote: “If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” (Ephesians 4:21-24 NASB1995)
Paul wrote: “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” (Titus 2:11-14 NASB1995)
And John wrote: “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” And “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected.” (1 John 1:6-7; 1 John 2:4-5 NASB1995)

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]

My sheep hear me. They know me.
They listen to my voice and obey.
I call them and lead them.
They know my voice, so they follow me.
They will never follow strangers.
They will run away from them.
The voice of a stranger they know not;
They do not follow him.

So, I tell you the truth that
I am the gate, so you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever enters
Not by the gate; other way,
He is the thief and a robber.
Listen not, the sheep to him.

Oh, I am the Good Shepherd,
Who laid his own life down for the sheep.
I know them. They know me.
They will live with me eternally.
The thief only comes to steal and
Kill and to destroy the church.
I have come to give you life that
You may have it to the full…

They know my voice, so they follow me.

UN rights office says Israeli settlements in Occupied Territories amount to a 'war crime'

Hours after President Donald Trump rescinded American sanctions on far-right settler groups and individuals accused of involvement in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, dozens of “Israeli civilians,” some of them masked, raided the Palestinian village of Al-Funduq. There, they “instigated riots, set property on fire and caused damage,” the statement said.

Health authorities in the region said at least seven people were killed and dozens injured.

Trump administration lifted sanctions on Israeli settler, who is now accused of killing Palestinian activist

Yinon Levi is accused of killing Palestinian who worked on Oscar-winning film.

Yinon Levi, the alleged shooter according to Israeli officials, faced financial sanctionsimposed last year under then-President Joe Biden after being cited for allegedly inciting violence against Palestinian civilians and burning farmland.

Levi's name appears at the very top of the list of those who had sanctions lifted, released by the Treasury Department in January.

Local officials confirmed that 31-year-old Awdah Hathaleen was shot dead in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair on Monday.

The father of three was an activist who worked on the film, "No Other Land," which tells the story of a West Bank community through the lens of a Palestinian activist. The movie won an Oscar in March for best documentary feature film.

"Lifting sanctions on the very individuals who perpetrate these unacceptable acts only emboldens violent settlers and sends a signal that the United States won't hold violent actors accountable," [Rep] Garamendi said.

Epstein-Barr

....For the last 18 months, it's been nothing but conservatives posting pics of "Here's Epstein and Clinton hanging out", and progressives posting pics of "Here's Epstein and Trump palling around"...

The reality is, if you comb the list above, you'll see a broad mix, and some who donate heavily to both, and even one that's a member of the UK Labour party.
Just pictures of people hanging out in group social setting is not worth anything and everybody knows it. On the surface level a lot of these people ran together because of money. The salient question is: how far up the ladder of intimacy with this creep did a particular person climb?

Trump definitely invites that question with his own naked female note of "may every day be another wonderful secret" and his own admitted proclivities.

It's not a matter of which is a greater crime, we are dealing with a national disaster. Many countries dumped their criminals, spies, and terrorists into the U.S. while one political party here looked the other way. The candidate supporting their quick deportation has won the presidency, campaigning on deporting all of those here illegally. We certainly can notify their countries of the situation and leave justice up to those countries. But To answer your question specifically about the "greater crime," I live in a progressive state where I disagree with the governor, Tim Walz, on most issues. Crime is a big one, our state is soft on crime. Last I heard it takes SIX burglary CONVICTIONS before jail time is recommended. Good burglars can pull a lot of jobs before they get caught, and when they get caught there has to be enough evidence and a willing prosecutor to convict them. So burglary is seen as a relatively minor crime.
