  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Parents are funny.
They have a whole life before you were born that often you have no idea about, cos they wont tell you.
I know some parents write memoirs so that their children will know what went down. ITs kinda like the Bible in a way. Lol

Perhaps your parents have some skeletons in the closet? I know my mom was a contortionist when she was young but otherwise not athletically inclined. I know she watched the cars float by when she was in Jr. High or late grammar school during the flood that lead to the Los Angeles river becoming concrete sided. I know she had a part in the production of Pirates of Penzance when she went to Hollywood High. I know Hollywood had a competition where they awarded a cup for the best student in chemistry and physics. Mom was the second woman to win the chemistry cup and the first to win the physics cup. She was the second person to win both. I know mom graduated Phi Beta Kappa in Chemistry at UCLA and went on to do grad work there. I know she met my father when she was the TA for the chemistry class he was taking. I know dad was a bit of a slacker in High School and enlisted in the Navy as a Machinists mate in WW II. I'll leave out the more gruesome war stories and only mention that it is painful to trade away half your beer for ice and then have your Australian guests wait for it to get to room temperature before drinking it. Oh and I know exactly how one of my dads friends in Dental school scared away the Jehovah's Witnesses forever when they were neighbors!

Heck I know more than a little about the courtship of my maternal grandparents.

sounds complicated. Did you notice the age gap between your parents affected how they related to each other?
My parents are close in age, I think mum is only few months younger than dad born 1945.
I don't really know what its like to have step brothers and step sisters there's just four children in my family. But I have many aunties and uncles, as both my parents came from large(ish) families, mum had 7 siblings and dad had 4.

I never knew one of my grandads on mums side, never met him and he died when I was 8. Mum never had anything good to say about her dad, so..I kinda wonder what that meant for her.

Im a boomerang kid apparently.
But its common these days. My own parents wouldnt go back to their parents but its like filial duty to visit them every week.

I remember being quite close to my grandma when she was alive and always going to visit her and sometimes my mum didnt want to go with me. She lived just down the road but when she got ill and needed looking after my mum didnt want her around.

Maybe they got on each others nerves.
My dad, on the other hand, ran away from home cos of his mother. Didnt like visitng her so much because she didnt relate to me at all.

I often wonder what it be like to have christian parents, but then from what i can tell being a pastor or preahers Kid isnt much fun either as their parents are so caught up in ministering they neglect their own, it can happen.

Was reading a bio on selwyn hughes who wrote the every day with Jesus devotionals. He was a great minister but I think his minstry took its toll on his children because he was away so much on engagmentd and evangelisng. He had two sons and they both died before he did as well as his wife.

One son had a heart attack and the other had a drinking problem.

Another christian couple I read about the schaeffers francis and edith had an interesting marriage as fundamentalist evangelical christians and their son reacted to that by becoming eastern orthodox. He thought his mum was quite crazy and wrote a whole book about it.

I read a little bit of Francis Sahaeffer when I was younger. I found it both good and bad as I remember. So I wasn't as attracted to his writing as others.

In looking at my two boys, I notice they don't approach life they way I do. I came to approach life from a very intellectual way for much of my life. My two boys have not done that.
So many of the things I hold dear from all my studing, they could care less about.

I now have some parenting books for the church library.
One is called 'the christian parenting handbook' so I thought maybe I'd read up on it just in case.
I read one called 'mothering heights' it was written for christian mothers, but for some reason it kept quoting things out of novels. Ok I have read a few novels but not every novel out there and its seems like some people think that women just sit round reading novels all the time. Couldn't they find any quotes out the Bible?

Anyway. If I recall, the bronte sisters who wrote 'wuthering heights' actually had no mother. Well, Emily was three when their mother died.

According to jewish custom, you became an adult at 13 when boys had their bar mitsvah and then your parents werent responisible for whatver sins you might commit. As girls didnt get circumcised, im not sure if that extended to girls.

Im not sure if it explicitly says in the bible what age one becomes an adult, but it does say for men when they marry they leave home and cleave to their wife.

But Paul does write to the corinthians about giving up childish things and becoming a man.
When Jesus was age 12 he went missing in Jeruslem and was found in his fathers house...he says, teaching the doctors there. Did he disobey joseph and Mary by disappearing? Or was he obeying his Heavenly Father?

If dads today are to be like our Father in Heaven then they arent to provoke us to anger, I cant recall ever being provoked by God, He is not like that to me. He loves me. He can chastise me but he doesnt make me angry.
