Interesting. You do this to improve health and increase spiritual vision I guess.
Yes, I drink only water, and try to make sure that I drink enough, sip some every once an awhile. Actually from my records, it was day 5 and not day 4. The rough period was day 5 to day 9(the worst day). After day 9, it was wonderful. It is done for health. My faith is helped some and I am thankful of God. Our real health is to do the will of God. It is hard to do with an unhealthy body, for we are bothered by our burden on others, yet we can still obey Jesus and shine.
We are told to fast and pray, yet not to do this openly. I have to admit that I don't fast and pray. I fast for my health, yet in a sense, I am receiving the benefit spiritually for doing without the world for awhile. It seems pleasant to cook, clean and serve others to the fullest and not to yourself. I take pleasure in them really enjoying their home cooked meals. My family seems puzzled by my concern and service to them while doing without, knowing that I am serving them the very meals that I really have enjoyed. I would say that this is an education for me about service to others and a brief separation from the world. My oldest sister told me that she fasted every Monday. She is so pleasant to be around and firm joyful follower of Jesus. I would say that her fasting is very helpful for her faith. If a woman was to fast for one day, it would be fairly easy to do, but to fast like a man could for 3 days would be difficult because of the way that God designed our bodies (see paragraph below). I would think that the spiritual benefits of fasting would be to obey God and fast and pray through the commands & teachings of Jesus. Obedience is paramount to all other things. Jesus gave us a pathway to great joy and full life, only adding to our souls. This world only keeps us alive till the real one. We ought to obey Christ and not waste our time here. Yes, fasting is very healthy for our spiritual growth. That may explain why it helps our physical as well.
Ketosis for men (women is 1.5 days) starts in 3 days. That is to say the body has enough energy reserves (liver) to last that long, then when the body runs out of this stored energy source, it latches on to muscle tissue to dissolve them (for muscle is an excellent and easy to obtain source of energy), then the brain recognizes the need for energy because of this conversion of muscle tissue and starts a process that is called ketosis to convert everything in the body that can give us energy, especially fat, plague and other tissues
that aren't essential like our muscle tissues can be. That is why our blood vessel walls become free of plague and our blood pressure falls all the way to normal again, which is permanent. This process allows a full clean up and natural rebooting of the human body. Many parts of the body are healed. Yet cancer is pervasive and may actually be unfortunately benefited, instead of destroyed. However, healthy cells are cleaned up, removing many dangerous contaminates in their fatty outer cell membrane layer which might have the possibility of leading to cancer, because it is located so close to the cell's nucleus where the Chromosomes are located (the actual starting point of cancers)).
Water fasting was the medicine for health for thousands of years, until the pill pushing process that we have today came about, which allow us to not have to suffer, or ever get healed! The problem is that pill pushing increases dramatically over the years until the combined toxins in them alone can and does kill us. So much healing procrastination and being ignorant about our health. Nutrition starts with whole foods and stays there, period! Manufactured vitamins are dangerous, for they only mimic what God perfectly designed for our bodies. They can attribute toward cancer (a proven fact by many research experiments). Whole foods are loaded with what we need and is right from the Maker, our Father. I love God!
What are whole foods? Think about the garden of Eden and you are thinking correctly. Whole foods that are beneficial are plant based, not the meats. However, we need the natural vitamin B12, which is abundant in meats, but missing in commercial produce (on account of pesticides etc.). Organic produce may have sufficient quantities of B12 due to no pesticides being used and thus not killing the beneficial bacteria on the plant's leaves, fruits and stems (don't over wash, just use a little water to remove the dirt on organic plant based whole foods). If you don't think that you get enough of this vitamin, then by all means enjoy a great baked or grilled fish (other meats are ok, just keep them 12 oz. per week to get your B12 requirements met (beef, chicken, whatever, keep it low on the more notorious ones; pork, lobster, shrimp, etc.). The healthiest of plant based foods are the leafy greens with Kale as best, then there are spinach, collards, turnip greens, cabbage, ......, just keep this in mind to eat a handful of raw nuts to release the full nutrition from these greens (nuts help to release up to 1000% more nutrition (the antioxidants in all greens)). All plant based foods are loaded with nutrition and the beloved antioxidants that God gave us. There is no reason for cancer in the Garden of Eden, for if you stay within it, in almost all of your eating, you are too strong for cancer to mess with, except for the influences from our more extreme environmental pollutants. Certain combinations of foods like onions and mushrooms are excellent in preventing cancers. Salads with lite dressings and cooked greens should be the main stay of a plant based whole food diet (a handful of raw nuts should be eaten with each). Processed foods are just too nutrition deficient to be considered whole foods. In manufacturing them, there is very little nutrients left. I tell my oldest son that one might as well eat poop, since it might have more value than what is left in a most of our processed foods; very sad.
A short water fast is beneficial. A longer 11 day fast cures high blood pressure and a few other things (my hemorrhoids for one). A longer still 25 to ? days would basically reboot the whole body and cure about anything within it, except cancer or such things as number 1 diabetes. A water fast is superior to other types of fast, because it starts up ketosis. Ketosis is activated by the lack of sugar in the body.
First world nations are very much hooked (yes addicted) to what is commonly referred to as the Standard American Diet (SAD). Everything and everywhere is the SAD deficient diet that causes starvation within our cells of the nutrients that they need to survive. What a shame! Go back to God's garden! Grow one in the back yard. Enjoy.
An excellent and reliable book to read is Dr. Joel Fuhrman's, "Eat to Live" and his Fasting book that he wrote in 1995. He has written many new books lately, all are good to read. His daughter is also writing some. He is a wonderful doctor. I think that God would be proud of him. Jesus wouldn't include him in those cursed doctors that he spoke of in his ministry.

PS: It is extremely important to see your doctor before attempting any fast longer than 1.5 days for women or 3 days for men. I am not on medications and can not afford a doctor, so I research constantly to know what I am doing and what to expect, especially if trouble should come during a water fast.
