There are plenty of people, like the original poster, who think that it's all a waste of effort because Jesus is going to swoop down in the near future and take them away to a better place.
As they say:

You don't polish brass on a sinking ship.

I'd also remind them that God appointed humans as stewards of the Earth, and the role of a steward is one of sustainable development, not unrestricted unsustainable plunder.
Yes, we're stewards of God's creation and should act responsibly; but that doesn't mean we should jump every time a shrewdness of scientists comes up with a doomsday plot.

No? Well when WOULD you suggest jumping to do something? If not when scientists tell you something is wrong, then when?

When scientists tell us something is right -- like abortion.

Uh, what? Science doesn't determine morality. While statements from science can and should inform, and that information may be used to make moral decisions, science itself has nothing to say one way or another on the matter.

Of course not.

When has any scientist ever made a claim about the ethicality of abortion, or anything else, for that matter, and expressed it in scientific terms?

However, the fault here is partially mine, as I used the word "wrong" when I should, perhaps, used a less ambiguous phrase. Allow me to try again...

No? Well when WOULD you suggest jumping to do something? If not when scientists tell you something is amiss, broken, damaged or defective, then when?

Let me try another way... let us assume, for the sake of argument, that anthropogenic climate change is real. What would it take to convince you of this?

As Blackwater Babe mentioned, the ship has allegedly been sinking for an awfully long time now. There are passages that seem to indicate Paul thought the end times would occur in his lifetime.

Isn't there also a passage somewhere saying something to the effect that nobody knows when it's going to happen?

Exactly; it is societies that define morality not science!

You don't polish brass on a sinking ship.

Better to desecrate our Father's creation than to take care of it. Especially if we know Jesus is coming soon. If we wreck our Father's creation enough, perhaps Jesus will take us up into Heaven just to stop the damage.

Give me a break.

I've heard this Club of Rome junk ever since my college days in the late '70s.

Overpopulation, earth running out of resources, syzygies, Y2K, radon gas in the basement, lead paint on the wall, asbestos falling from the ceiling, greenhouse effect, Hale-Bopp, Red Scare, killer bees ...

I'm going back to bed.

Perhaps you might consider getting scientific facts from the actual scientists studying those problems rather than the media. It kind of helps when one is able to separate the wheat from the chaff.

So, what scientists, that is climate scientists, the people who actually do the science, not the media and politicians; are coming up with a doomsday plot.

The Club of Rome is the world's most prestigious think tank -- (or it was back in the '70s, anyway).

Does it matter? a scientist is a scientist is a scientist.
