  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why I Don't Believe In Atheism's Creation Myth

Since you don't believe God exists, what difference could it possibly make to you?

So, you answer one question but not this one? Not surprising.
So, I ask again, is it possible for me to pick a choice other than what this deity KNOWS I WILL PICK?

AV may drive me nuts with his fundamentalism but at the same time, his (usually) consistently unabashed and unapologetic belief makes him a little more pleasant to debate with (mostly.) ;)

Now, the question is this: If you cannot select a choice other than the one you will pick, how do you have a real choice?

He knows what you're going to choose. He's not making you choose anything.

Strawman. I never said nor implied he made you choose anything.

What I am saying is that choice only exists when you CAN select ANY of the choices available to you. If you cannot, then it's not a choice. If I cannot select something other than what he knows I WILL pick, then I have no choice in the matter.

Of course you have a choice. You choose what you are going to do. You choose what you want, or you choose something else. He knows, that doesn't mean you don't have a choice. He created you, He knows you better than you know yourself. Of course He knows what you're going to pick.

If we truly have a choice, then God cannot know what we will choose. If He does know, then we do not have a choice.

If God knows what I am going to have for dinner, can I choose to have something else?

If you choose to have something else, He knew you were going to do that.

If you choose to have something else, He knew you were going to do that.

But I can't choose to have something other than what He knows I will have, correct?

It's just around lunch time where I am. But God knows what I am going to have for dinner. He knows that I am going to have pasta. Am I able to choose to have something else for dinner? Yes, I can "choose" something else, and He would know that. But he absolutely, in His omniscient way, knows exatly what I am going to have for dinner. If He knows absolutely, in His omniscient way, that I will have pasta, is there any way for me to choose to have something else?

From that perspective, you don't; but if you want to look at it that way, then what you are actually saying is that you have no choice but to be able to select a choice.

No -- from God's perspective, you already had it.

Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
Isaiah 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

Right, so I have no choice. Merely the illusion of choice.

I think AV understood my point. If you can't select other than what god knows you will, you don't really have a choice.

Well, to be precise, we don't have a choice but to select the choice God knows we will.

No -- from God's perspective, you already had it.

This is pretty interesting. In a sense, if we were omniscient, we would know everything that's happened and ever WILL. So, in effect, it'd be like watching a movie. The characters in the movie act as though they have a choice, but you already know the choice they will (did?) make.

In a sense, God would be the ultimate wave function 'collapser' and he would have already observed the true state of Schrodinger's cat. =Pwe

You're not logically drawing this out. If a god exists, and he created us, and he knows what choices we'll make, ... then we don't have a choice, do we?
Yes, we do - the "choices we'll make".
Put another way, no matter what we choose, god knows we'll choose it, because he created us.
But we did "choose it".
If you can't see this, then well. Carry on.
What I am seeing is that no matter how you try to swing it we still "choose it" and the "choices we'll make" are optional.

set two brand new dollar bills side by side, tell him he can choose just one, which one does he take? This is a little harder to predict, and impossible to know.

This logic is so flawed it's embarrassing.

Why not?
If God knows what I am going to have for dinner, can I choose to have something else?
Yes you can, you can choose something else He knows you will choose. You have options, therefore choices.
