Chip and Joanna Gaines sat down with Oprah. Some Christians are in an uproar over it. They had a popular show on HGTV called Fixer Upper and were discovered through Joanna’s decorating blog.

Joanna once said in a previous interview, "Getting the intention right helps make all other decisions going forward that much better and changes your perspective." While speaking to Oprah, Joanna elaborated on what she meant by that quote—especially in the context of their hectic schedule as parents and business owners.

"We think about the time we have. We have five kids. We have this business. Anything we say yes to, there has to be a meaningful 'why' behind it. It's not just to add to our portfolio or tackle bigger dreams," Joanna said.

For both Oprah and Joanna, the key to decision-making comes down to identifying and committing to your "why" question. Ask why you want to do something—and be sure you like the answer. "When we can align with the 'why' and get passionate about it, then that gives us the fuel to get across the finish line. The intention part is the most important," Joanna says.

They’re returning with a new show this year. Fans are looking forward to it.

Because they appeared on Oprah’s show and she isn’t a Christian. It’s my personal belief that God is using them to reach the lost and demonstrate a Christian ethic to the world. He doesn’t need to make someone famous to help you decorate your home.

They acknowledge their faith openly, they’re family oriented, and the show is wholesome. Believers are comfortable with missionaries engaging with the lost and unchurched. But public figures are chided for doing the same. They don’t want you to go outside of the fold.

The Sunday School group I go to had a game night on Saturday. It was fine.

I know. I wonder what's behind that. It's probably complicated. Cultural anxiety? She's not one of us, might taint the pure? I don't know.

They’re very hard on women. Most of the criticism and judgment comes from them. The reasons vary. Lack of adversity, too much difference, or too much comfort will set them off. They acknowledge their disagreement publicly and it isn’t pretty.

Oprah triggered them. She interviews the best and rising stars. It’s a signal you’re heading for stardom. There isn’t a Christian equivalent. We haven’t infiltrated every industry. Especially entertainment.

But God is changing that. He’s raising up Christian Martha Stewarts, fashion designers, and so on. To impact the world for His glory. Not to create a Christian Club Med.

There’s a need for light and He’s sending it. But few see the positions with spiritual eyes. They’re stuck in the natural. The first time I watched their show I was amazed. Because the Lord did it. Their story confirms it.

They inspire me. They’re living their faith under scrutiny. They aren’t beating you over the head or shoving scriptures down your throat. When you watch them you see love and togetherness. You see family on display. And we need that now. More than ever.

It’s easy to judge when your flaws are under wraps. Nobody sees them or calls you out in front of others. It breaks my heart to see Christians tearing down His servants. We should be praying for them and celebrating what He’s done.
