You have some time yet before you can say you've been here multiyears :D
I just found this post from 2018. I've been on CF for six and a half years now, so I can now say I've been here multiyears! :ahah:

...Wow, that feels like a long time! I totally forgot about some of the posts I made in this thread. :p

People always think I lack faith because of my anxiety. I don't worry because I don't have faith, I worry because I know that God sometimes chooses not to act. Being a believer doesn't mean nothing bad will ever happen to you or you'll be happy all the time.

I don't remember 2018, it was a sort of "nothing" year. On the whole, anyway.

I had a decent trip across America; I froze to death in Chicago then was boiled alive in Dallas literally a few days later... Ha, both climates were tricky for a Londoner to get their head around. We're stuck at 13 celsius year round.

Two cities, less than a thousand miles apart, yet from two completely different worlds. God bless America - literally.

It was a good birthday. Tired and more celebration this weekend and next.

Had some good conversation with a friend at a brewery after going to a salt cave. Also discovered a new cocktail bar. Everywhere we went everyone was young college aged. She said it's not usually like that but it is a college town. Young girls next to us dressed to the 9s were a bit loud. I had yakisoba and a Tokyo comic mocktail. Also a mocktail at the cocktail place since it's a 49 minute drive.

First year to not be on social media for my birthday and hide my birthday before taking a 6 month break. I'll see in the summer if anyone sent wishes. I was more available for those that text or called. I miss the wishes, but I feel more present without it.
I don't regret getting rid of my active Facebook account years ago. I do technically have an account now, but I hardly ever post and I've less than 30 contacts. I only caved and remade the account a year or 2 ago for the messenger portion. I discovered during the period of having no account at all that I really liked being private. It's also nice to not be bombarded with everyone else's opinions as well. I found that Facebook became very political and divisive. It can be hard though to find a good replacement for the messenger portion of Facebook. I like Whatsapp, but not everyone uses that app. Messenger is still one of the easiest ways to group chat and to plan group activities with some others from church. I do have an Instagram account, but I use that to mostly follow artists, special interest pages and to share some of my art as well. I think a lot of stress and negativity can be brought into our lives from using social media (I found that to be the case personally, anyway). I also do find that with forums too. I regularly feel like I need to take breaks from all of it.

I don't regret getting rid of mine either. I deleted it back in 2020. I have no intention of going back.

What's hard is getting friends and family to join alternative social media. They just don't see the point. I guess they don't value freedom or something. Do they like seeing lies on the Internet all the time and being told what to do?

Always? I wouldn't say that to you!

I would've deleted Facebook a long time ago but agreed, the Messenger on it is invaluable & my best friend & I text primarily that way. I also follow a lot of Christian pages on Facebook. There's a misunderstanding that social media is all negative & secular & rude people & designed to make you upset, but there's some God-fearing people out there & good pages if you're willing to find them. But I have noticed a lot of inappropriate Valentine's Days ads on it lately.

Valentines Day... To be honest, I don't know that anyone takes any notice over here. Most people are still too terrified to look at their account balance from Christmas to enjoy doing anything until at least the May bank holiday.

Best distraction is the first day of lent - which incidentally falls on Valentines Day this year.

Yes on the politics. That change came around 2011-2012.

Interesting that you deleted your account. I just had lunch with a friend that I also work with and she said she only has a Facebook account because her husband tags her. She's 31. I propose that she delete her account, because we were talking about the friends that aren't really our friends but you can't get rid of them from work without hurt. But when I propose that and she liked the idea, she said that she's struggling right now working with a health coach on her screen time. She has a habit that she doesn't think that she could cut it out.

I take breaks rather than deleting all of it. But I am thinking about when I get back on in the summer of purging most of my photos because of the new AI threats. I've gained too many frenemies (plus great friends) in the workplace through social media.

It is!!!! Hence my sister just text me a crying emoji because she missed my birthday but.3 days. Social media cont act as a calendar, news, video chats with my niece and nephew (she's two states away) and updates on what's happening with family and friends. And coworkers. I never would have the strong relationships I've built sinc 2020 without it. My running adventures and gardening has been the main talking point, besides cooking.

I had an Instagram account that was hacked, once I created a new one. I've not let many people in. It's been my retreat place from the masses. My sister shows photos on there that she doesn't on Facebook.
regularly feel like I need to take breaks from all of it.
Yes! Yes! And yes!!!! It's hard initially.
I don't regret getting rid of mine either. I deleted it back in 2020. I have no intention of going back.
That's great! And great that you stuck with alternatives. Not many people have.

Interesting perspective. I will start fine Daniel. Fast 3 days after that. And for the lent season I'm giving up caffeine. It's going to be hard.

I had probably been told this story before as a child but did not remember it at all, so just tonight I heard from my mother while she was telling it to her neighbor Sandy as she was visiting, how my maternal grandparents first met. It almost sounds like something you'd see in romance movies that take place in the 50's and 60's.

So it is 1957, and my grandfather had just come back home from the Navy. He's at a drive-in with his friends, hanging out as i can only imagine people in their late teens and early 20's did in that time, catches the eye of my grandmother with her friends some distance away, she whistles at him, he brushes it off like "eh, whatever", and, ever the fiery 5'10" redhead, she's not having it ignored. ^_^ She marches over to him, demands a date, and they are married ten weeks later.
