I don't think they even CAN drop that now, can they? Kind of painted into a corner, so to speak?
It would have to happen. It is one of the main factors that lead to schism in the first place.

UB said:
what is that?
The current Catholic mass.

UB said:
musical instruments? or something else?
Musical instruments. Only one's voice box is used and for a reason.

UB said:
don't bishops have to be celibate in EO though? ( I remember seeing that ONE level of the heiarchy had to be, anyways.
Bishops yes, priests no. Married men can be priests, provided they are married before ordination.

it's been defined as infallible truth. They CAN'T back away from that one, I don't think.
Unless somebody spoke "ex cathedra"!:D

Or they could just reexamine it.

Yeah.... I just don't know if they CAN drop it, regardless. They've proclaimed it as infallible truth, and all.

What is the distinct differences that would be cause for concern/problems?

So, the EO position is that it's wrong to worship using musical instruments?

cool, thanks.

another interesting hypothetical. Could an ex cathedra undo a previous ex cathedra.... hmmm.

yeah, but could they drop an "infallible" truth.

East and West "officially" went their separate ways in 1054 AD, whereas John Calvin denied the papacy in the 1530's and Calvinism was born. You are much closer to Rome than the Orthodox.

Love,
Christina
Oh, you mean "close" in terms of how many years it's been since a split. Okay, I thought you meant close as in terms of alliance and doctrine. I was about to say, hold on there! ^_^

but in some ways, doctrine too ... though these days there is such variation, its hard to tell. But, for example, there is not original sin in EO doctrine. (Its technically called ancestral sin, and is much closer to the Hebraic undersatnding of Adam's fall...)

Sorry man, it’s not that - I have problems understanding your quotes with all this original Hebrew and Greek words and some numbers (at least I think these things in your quotes are original Hebrew and Greek words) and I don’t have a Bible at hand.

Well, apparently we have some doctrines in common with you all as well. EmperorConstantine named a few things that both Orthodox and Protestants reject such as the authority and infallibility of the pope, celibacy of the clergy, Immaculate Conception. I'm sure there are more. :)

LOL They can be hard to read at times, but since I enjoy looking up the original words I can appreciate the effort.

Maybe we can find a cool way to do those posts and help the folks that don't have a Bible etc handy at the moment?

Actually, I'm sure there are A LOT more :)

some of the basic "stuff" (like original sin, the influence of Anselm in the west) may have very different basis -- so thats why it can be hard to tell...

It helps if we know how eachother defines things. Just looking at the issue of praying to saints is evidence of that.

We must, above all else, remember that our unity is in Christ. He needs to be at the center of any and all discussions. This is something I know I need to remember.

God bless

Cool. I'd love to hear what all y'all believe in to see on what issues we have common ground.

Let me just say this, if I weren't Protestant I would be Orthodox before I would be Catholic. :)

Well, yeah all Christians are catholic ultimately. Even us heretic Protestants! :D ^_^

Thanks. It is my favourite icon of Christ. Simple yet beautiful.

I just love how it captures both the loving Shepherd and the righteous Judge all at once. Very powerful.
