You know, in reality, we only seem "Pope-centric" because people talk, talk, talk about the pope all the time. Its kinda like how people blab about Bush all the time when in reality the Federal government has basically no affect on their day to day life.

The fact is, every Catholic bishop is virtually autonomous in his own diocese. It would be an extremely rare day indeed if a pope ever interfered in the doings of a diocese other than his own.

Kath, that is encouraging to hear.

Can you imagine what a task it would be (especially in the USA) to get all the dioceses (?) in order if the churches were to unite? Not impossible, but certainly daunting.

We ARE united in Doctrine - no bishop can stray from THAT - and I am not trying to downplay the authority of the pope. But it IS TRUE that in the normal functions and daily routines and administrations of a diocese, the pope really has no practical say in the matter: Ministries, schools, churches, budgets, publications, ordinations of priests.. ..the list is endless of things the pope has no function in

LOL that's actually pretty funny. My birthday is actually on Christmas, but we had to change the day to celebrate to Christmas Eve because my brother and sister used to think that Santa Claus favored me because I had more presents
Santa claus? I think you mean satan clause! NO single legend has ever done so much to eclipse the view of the true meaning of Immanuel than this one...

Oh brother!!!!!! My family as millions of others had no problem of making sure Christ is the center of Christmas. By the time you become old enough to truely understand the true meaning of Christmas, Santa Claus has become what it is a fable.

We commemorate St. Nicolaos (Nicholas) :)

a 'warrior' of Christ against heresy and an example of Christian charity.
The Incarnation was more than an event; Immanuel continues also in the witness of those who "love and live" Him.

AMEN!! Saint Nicholas is no "fable". How insulting. Saint Nicholas is alive and well, beholding the face of God as are all others who have died in God's friendship.

Saint Nicholas, pray for us.

Couple things
1. I said LEGEND not fable
2. unless he's omnipresent he ain't hearin ya.
3. I said santa claus...NOT Nicholas

And what that legend has grown into sickens me.

Wow I would hate to be a child in your household, what else do you ban, Trick or treating, Harry Potter, Snow White, Lord of The Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Sleeping Beuty?
I rather like all of those myself. :)

Matthew 12:14 And the Pharisees/far-isaioi <5330> having gone forth, held a consultation against him, how they might destroy Him

Revelation 9:21 And not they reform out of the murders of them, nor out from their Sorceries/far-makeiwn <5331> ,...........

5330. Pharisaios far-is-ah'-yos of Hebrew origin (compare 6567); a separatist, i.e. exclusively religious; a Pharisean, i.e. Jewish sectary:--Pharisee

5331. pharmakeia far-mak-i'-ah from 5332; medication ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extension) magic (literally or figuratively):--sorcery, witchcraft.

5332. pharmakeus far-mak-yoos' from pharmakon (a drug, i.e. spell-giving potion); a druggist ("pharmacist") or poisoner, i.e. (by extension) a magician:--sorcerer.
