  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is currently on your mind?

Thinking about deleting my old manuscripts. I'm porting over data to a new computer, and sorting through it looking for duplicate files. It's the manuscripts that give me pause. I look at the dates on them and realize if I can't break into the pro market by now, it's never going to happen.

And no, that's not as depressive as it sounds.

There you go mother dear,

Why do you care who's president of Ireland?

She is anti for all the right reasons, though even if limited to a certain degree, she won a landslide.

My mother of blessed memory spoke often of where she was born, she never got to see it again this side of life,

But now I would think her dreams have come true..

Listen carefully to the text of the song.

HodgePodgeCollection from the past, fwiw:

For a cup-a-joe, go to a 'Cheers' / restaurant. Find one with a fireplace if possible.
Waiting for the cold weather to warm up.. was about -20 (not including the wind chill) for parts of the day. Although I am grateful snow wise it's been a pretty mild winter thus far.
============================
Hot and cold, wind and rain and ice and snow, warm days , hurricanes, tornadoes,
all designed by and sent by God. Seasons God Stated will continue (how long??) .....
Spoiler alert. So far spring has managed to come every year for quite some time.
===========================
When do toes and fingers grow back ?
I suppose it is more difficult for those who haven't had time to acclimatize as is the case when cold air rushes south. The one thing they need to remember is toes and fingers usually do not grow back. But neighbouring on you I know you are aware of that. Helps keep the mosquitoes at bay also, but slows production of chainsaw sculpting..
=============================
Never hurry, never worry. Rejoice in the Lord Always. Pray always, for everything and everyone you think about.
So also do what God Grants you to do.
When I was young I never worried about if the heater works or water lines or car will start. I took it all for granted. And I could enjoy a winter's day. now I think about all those who have no power.
================================
Find out what to do about infections and you won't be worried about them.
My cracked tooth (caused by a trip & fall last year), and how much this is going to cost, how much more pain I am going to be in, will the infection come back before I can get to the dentist next week etc.

There’s a seed you can plant to aid with toothaches. I purchased it a few years ago from Baker’s Creek. You chew a piece of the flower and it has a numbing effect. They ship globally and I’ll include a photo below. It’s more potent than clove oil.

How to replace a board on a wooden ramp. I think it's decking. I used to work construction in the summer, but that never involved decks. The hand rails are set on a plate like studs on a wall on 24 inch centers (60 cm centers would be a close equivalent). Was on the way home, dreading finding the screws holding the handrail in place, then remembered how we repaired stud walls. I think we would have cut out a section of plate over the bad board; removed the screws that are under the plate and in the center; cut a new board to fit; drill pilot holes; screw down the board; then cut new plates to replace the cut-out sections.

At least, I think that's how we would have done it.

Intend to use pressure treated wood for the plate. Maybe decking is pressure treated. The reason I think the board is decking is that it's an odd dimension. It could have been 1 1/2 x 6 inches before dressing, Have seen 1 x 6 and 2 x 6, but never 1 1/2 x 6.

Also debating whether to chance a circular saw (which I have), or use a reciprocating saw (which I'd have to buy). We used both repairing stud walls.

You have far more expertise on that than I do, Tuur, so I don't think I can add anything to that!

What's on my mind is the complexity of relationships, institutions, systems, and processes. And how complicated it has become to navigate all of those.

Blame the Babel tower project, I have no idea what the terms you are using mean, :)

After using a micrometer to measure the shafts on a damaged clock motor, then ordering a replacement, that I get involved in some strange repairs. The clock, BTW, happened to be a keepsake, and picking up a replacement in a crafts section taught me that no, they aren't all made the same. Will see if the motor will fit another clock that's a sort-off keepsake.

Is it a keepsake or an heirloom/antique? If it’s an heirloom or an antique, you’ll probably need someone familiar with those type of pieces. Jewelers usually have staff that know about those type of pieces. New stuff is nothing like the quality of the old stuff.

He's talking about manual labor.

Yes, good for him, but was trying to picture his project.

I have never understood where the saying, "The devil is in the details," comes from.

I think of Moses when he noticed a bush burning, the details was the bush was not devoured.

This spoke to him.

Keepsake mostly. Close to an heirloom. Antique? Maybe closer to it than I'd think. It's one of the early saw blade clocks. Just a saw blade with a printed face and a quartz battery movement. These types of movements have been around for a long time. It's just a quartz oscillator controlled stepping motor, which sounds fancier than it is. You have a simple solenoid with a U shaped piece of metal run through it, and that makes a pulse that turns the rotor a precise amount. You can make the things run backwards by carefully disassembling the motor and flipping over the U shaped piece of metal. That's handy for making gag clocks that run backward. Have made two or three, along with a mirror image clock face, but, like a Billy Bass (tm), it gets old. The rest is plastic gears that turn three shafts nested inside each other. A plastic kitchen clock that we got when we married almost forty years ago had such a motor, and they weren't new even then.

I dropped this clock taking it down to set the time. It broke the minute hand shaft and bent the second hand shaft. Straightened the second hand shaft and was wondering if a certain brand-name epoxy would work, but lost the broken off part. Gluing a nested shaft like this would be iffy, anyway, and that's if it adhered to the plastic.

Really, the only way to repair it is to replace the motor. Were it not for the metal saw blade, might would have tried a radio controlled clock motor where I wouldn't have to worry about setting it forward and back each year.

Really, if it was a cheap plastic clock, would just replace it. But it has sentimental value.

I'm a teacher in alberta. Our conservative government has revoked our constitutional rights to force us back to work (right to collective bargaining). They played her base by saying "they were going to hire x number of teachers"; and as soon as teacher's were forced back to school, they revoked that and indicated any money given for that purpose can be use for a multitude of OTHER purposes too.

Now they are putting into our Education Act policies we have been doing for DECADES and trying to make it look like they're doing something new.

I lost about $7000 fighting to make the classrooms in my province less complex and reasonably sized. And now folks are calling teachers' greedy.

It's always the way for teachers, nurses, and others in serving professions. They fight mostly for things which will benefit those they serve, but it's made out to be about personal greed. I'm sorry it's such a rubbish time for you, though.

Thanks "P-dawg" :)

My first day back I was really, just sad. I actually cried in front of the kids...and that's not ideal.

That said, we are going to be studying the "Charter of Rights and Freedoms" as our next unit in Social. I have to be "Balanced".....so I'm hoping I can generally do that. We'll see.
