  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is currently on your mind?

European settlement started here with a penal colony. I don't think either the prisoners or the guards found much to be thankful for in the early years!

Indeed, very sad times, very sad.

Ahhh.. it doesn't matter... Thanksgiving can just be a generic Holiday... and excuse to get time off work.

Even North Korea can celebrate it, I don't care... lol.

And yet the First Sermon preached by Richard Baxter was on the theme 'How Good Lord to be here'.

This may have reflected of the discomforts of the voyage, so recently concluded, or perhaps we beat the French, or perhaps reflecting of the beauty of Sydney Cove. Given that the glorious liberty of the Gospel was first proclaimed here accompanied by men in chains, one can but wander what the convicts thought of the sermon.

I do not think Paidiske was being ungrudging, but they were sad times,

Back in Ireland, potatoe famine and British rule and being sent away, is sad.

Have some turkey and stuffing and don't think about it too deeply.

Buy a turkey and throw it in the oven... I don't know how stuffing is made because I'm a degenerate... but I think it has to do with croutons and potatoes being mixed together. With an unhealthy dose of sodium to keep them together.

Indeed. It was not a time in which the Establishment commended itself to the hearts of the most vulnerable. I have often pondered the irony of boy choristers singing the Magnificat, evening after evening, in stunningly beautiful cathedrals and fine robes and exquisite musical settings, while outside the doors of those cathedrals the very people the Magnificat names as the locus of God's concern were ignored by the great and the good...

I have never dared try to cook turkey, but I am quite fond of duck. Do you think I could get away with that as a substitute?

That's interesting. I've heard Canada has their own version of Thanksgiving.
Yes started in the 15oo's. Something to do with an early English explorer and a sermon and meal of thanksgiving, and a few years later more traditionally French settlers created the 'order of good cheer' and dined with the natives.

We but the turkey roast in the foil tray and cook it on the BBQ. Great result, minimal effort, and the boys say they don't eat turkey, but as yet there has been none left for sandwiches on the Feast of Stephan.

That sounds like a suitably enculturated Australian Christmas. :)

Sigh. It's my daughter's birthday tomorrow, and the present she requested was to have her ears pierced. It is proving difficult to find somewhere willing to pierce ears given the Covid situation.

Perhaps she will settle for a certificate promising said results when conditions change?

I found somewhere. I was hoping to get it done at a pharmacy, but I've had to book in at a hairdresser that also does piercings. At least I didn't have to resort to the tattoo parlour!

I think I can honestly say I've never had the urge to do any Christmas baking.
