The Age of Dragons

Danny Glover does an admirable job as the mad Ahab in a movie that adapts Moby Dick... with dragons. It's far from a great movie but it has some creativity. It also really struck me how this story can be viewed as Cain versus Cain. Ahab, scarred by dragon's fire, has the symbolic Mark of Cain. He's consumed with rage. The white dragon is the violent apex predator whose seemingly impossible to kill.

I don't know if this more or less present in the book. The book does compare the whale to Cain, "...this leviathan seems the banished and unconquerable Cain of his race..."

Batman: The Long Halloween
This is the best detective Batman story I’ve watched. He ends up solving it pretty easily like he usually does, which is unfortunate, but the viewer is given many suspects & the web gets more complicated as the story goes on. The story being 2 parts helps that. I loved the mobster/noir feel to this. It’s hard for me to say if I liked Part I or Part II better. Part I is almost too mobster/noir, & Part II is more of your standard Batman w/ your usual cast of supervillains. The Joker is in this, & I never like how they try to do the Animated Series Joker in these darker toned stories, always makes him feel out of place. I also don’t like it’s another origin story, this one being 2 Face. I get tired of origin stories. How many times have I seen 2 Face’s origin too? I don’t mean to sound overly critical, as I really liked this. I would say it’s my favorite Batman cartoon movie I’ve watched. I recommend this even if you’re not too familiar w/ Batman.

Just finished Austinland.. I thought it was pretty good even though it got a low rating. I laughed a few times and I felt myself caught up in the romance. Very few films have made me feel that way. I think I like the fact that it was dealing with two worlds, what people present to you and what actually is.

If you think the movie was good, read the comic. You will not be disappointed. It's written by Jeph Loeb, and the art is done by the spectacular Tim Sale. 10/10, easily my favorite ever graphic novel.

My Friend Dahmer
The movie is basically Jeffrey being weird w/ his friends. It doesn’t really get into what makes him tick. It doesn’t really explore him too deeply. There’s very little horror or suspense. It’s a high school misadventures drama. Take the Napoleon Dynamite movie & add a couple animal killings, & that’s this movie. It makes the movie drag, b/c you keep waiting for the suspense or horror to ratchet up & it never happens. What it is, is good, the guy who plays Dahmer does excellent. His friends, not as much. I don’t think I ever really learned their names, but this movie isn’t about them so no big deal. It may feel like I have a lot of negatives on this movie, but I did like it. Just be aware of what this movie is (a teen drama, specifically a goofy teenager being goofy w/ his friends) before you watch it.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron
I remember this came out when I was in elementary school. The class voted on seeing this or Kangaroo Jack. Everyone voted Kangaroo Jack. I remember not liking that that much. So did we make the wrong choice in elementary school outvoting Spirit 26 to 0?
I liked Spirit! It’s no talking animals. It’s just Spirit narrating once in a while. The horses talk by neighing. I give this movie a lot of credit for doing that. The movie is beautiful to look at. The action scenes are good. The heart is there. I found myself cheering for Spirit, especially when he’s loaded onto the train. I didn’t know if he would find his family or not. A downside is it got a bit slow in the middle of the 2nd half. Dreamworks needs to go back to making these kinds of movies & not just dumb children’s comedies.

NFL – Lions/Packers
Lions won. Lions have won both games I’ve watched this season - their only 2 wins. Low scoring but very good / entertaining game. Every time a team drove down the field, they’d get stopped or turn it over in the redzone.

Run-away inflation. The Bank of Canada is upset that people have jobs and causing prices to come up. They think more people should be unemployed so people would spend less. The head of a union has called this Class Warfare. I can't believe I'm hearing this. I'm in a first-world democracy right?

I was reading on Reddit that's what the US is going to do to fight inflation too.

Layoffs have started. We should see more next month and a big wave in January.
