I would like to clear it up. As I said on another thread, To me how can you not believe in it?
We don't believe in OSAS because Scripture teaches against it on practically every page in the New Testament.
There are many ways to demolish OSAS (Once Saved Always saved), Eternal Security, and or Perseverance of the Saints (POTS) by reading and believing your own Bible. Click on the following links to take you to posts within this thread to learn more (with the Bible).
- Fall Away List of Verses.
- Serious Sin can Separate Us From God Verses.
- Verses on Sanctification Being a Part of Salvation.
- Obeying God’s Commands as a Part of Eternal Life Verses.
Bonus Point Verses.
If these lists are still not good enough for you, check out this general list of evidences that demolishes OSAS.
Long List of Verses Refuting OSAS or Eternal Security
Side Note:
I have provided a list of verses for each of these numbered points mentioned above; Just click on the link(s) (above), and you will be taken to the post that lists verses for that topic.
Side Note 2:
Oh, and in my experience: OSAS proof text verses ignore the context. For example: Many love to quote John 10:28, but they fail to point out that the kind of sheep that cannot be snatchd out of his hand are the kind of sheep that follow Jesus mentioned in verse 27 (John 10:27).
You said:You have to keep being saved over and over again otherwise?
If one struggles with mortal sin, then yes. But a believer needs to eventually in time overcome mortal sin so when they do, getting saved over and over again will not be an issue. Galatians 5:24 says that they that are Christ's have crucified the affections and lusts. 2 Corinthians 7:1 says, “...let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” Somehow I get the impression you don't believe 2 Corinthians 7:1 in what it plainly says. If you do, then explain to me how you actually believe it. What do you think it says? What do you think Galatians 5:24 says?
You said:So once isn't enough for you?
The 144,000 were found without fault before the throne of God (See: Revelation 14:3-5).
If you read the context, this was in reference to their behavior or in regards to how they lived a holy life. They are future Messianic believers. So it could very well be that a believer can potentially be saved once and then live a holy life and not justify sin or think they can sin and still be saved by having a belief alone on Jesus. Believers can sell out to Jesus and walk holy only by God's power. But you may ask, “Where is the Christian who is living righteously?” We are living in the last days. 2 Timothy 3:1-9 says in the last days perilous times will come. It says men will be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. It says that they will have a form of godliness, but they deny the power therof. Jesus said as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the coming of the Son of man. The world was destroyed by a global flood as example to all who will live ungodly thereafter according to the words of Peter.
What power can those who have a form of godliness be denying in 2 Timothy 3:1-9? The ability to overcome mortal sin by God's power. So it is today in the popular candy coated Christian world today that says one can sin and still be saved all because they have a belief on the finished work of Christ.
You said:That would seem to say that being saved is meaningless if you can't count on it to stick around.
Things are not as we wish them to be. A person is only to blame themselves if they do not want salvation anymore. Salvation is not lost like unintentionally losing a pair of car keys. A person has to rebel against the Lord by justifying sin in order to do that. But God's grace is there for a person to seek forgiveness with the Lord Jesus Christ and to receive mercy again.
You said:Any theories, thoughts, etc?
There are no theories of thoughts when it comes to establishing the truth in the Bible.
The Bible alone is our authority for all matters of faith and doctrine (Especially on the topics of sin and salvation).
