  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My daughter will sit down in the computer chair, play her educational games, then call out "Log in to Dungeons & Dragons, and kill some kobolds."

However, I'm teaching her to tabletop. It's learning math skills...yeah.
! I never thought of that. My best friend has a 6 year old, she'd love that stuff.

He's got her character in WOW's UI setup where there is no chat at all. For your little one did you do something like that in DDO? I realize it's nowhere near as bad as it is in wow, but still. Strangers.

Oh, no. She doesn't play, she likes watching me play. She played Wizards 101 for a while (which is a very strangely fun game...like playing a kid-friendly online game of M:tG), but as she's 6 most MMOs are still a little tricky for her.

I'm totally teaching my kids to tabletop. I am hoping by that point in human history explaining to them how much of a satan worshiper you are considered for playing DnD was an actual thing in the past, and not a thing at current. :p

Granted it's been a long time since I've been in a Fundamentalist environment, but I don't think the D&D moral panic of the 80's is as strong today as it was then. I could be mistaken, though.

I started playing a few years ago (3.5 edition), though my friends and I have recently switched over to Pathfinder. We switched mostly because the sheer number of 3.5 books was a heavy load, and since WoTC had already gone to 4th edition it just seemed like a good change of pace. Paizo keeps pumping out high quality books, and 3.5 to Pathfinder conversions are pretty easy to do since Pathfinder essentially is 3.5.

In fact I'm currently putting together a fantasy-western(ish) campaign. I was aiming for a "cowboys and castles" kind of feel, just for something maybe a little different. Takes place near a large, corrupt casino town located at a large oasis (probably influenced by my having been playing Fallout New Vegas recently).

Ok your kiddo is about the same age as my buddys, and yeah WOW is too much for her right now, she still loves playing it though. She played Wizards 101 and some pirates game for a while.

I sat around with her dad one day and watches her play while we chatted, lots of dying, and as a warlock she didn't like sending her little pet demon to fight because she didn't want it to get hurt.

That was actually one of the things I loved about 3.5! So many books so many choices. I loved the "modern" fantasy settings they had.

Fantasy western, first thing that comes to mind is Stephen Kinds "Gunslinger" series.

That's one of the things I like about Pathfinder, you definitely don't lose out on options. You can play as a human, get your bonus feat, bonus skills (and a +2 to any ability score with the default Pathfinder human), but you can also choose from a good number of alternate racial traits, such as instead of a bonus feat, and bonus skill points, you could get a +2 to any two ability scores representing a stronger specialization. Additionally instead of just being a fighter, you could take one of almost a dozen fighter archetypes which changes how the class is played--and with favored class options (any race can choose what their favored class is), a human fighter could get unique bonuses. I also like Pathfinder's streamlining. Instead of something like a trip attempt being a set of complex roles, things like trip are classified as "combat maneuvers" and simply require rolling a CMB (Combat Maneuver Bonus) check against someone's CMD (Combat Maneuver Defense).

Streamlining without dumbing down or reducing the options available is, really, one of the things that really sold me.

You know, I hadn't even thought of the Dark Tower series, but that does seem pretty close, setting-wise.

Been playing some Shadow of the Colossus and (as always) Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Ive recently beaten some amazing indie games such as Lone Survivor and the spectacularly awesome Hotline Miami. Honestly, the latter gave me the same sense of self-shame of my own sadism that Man Hunt did years ago.

Question for gamers: If the game you are playing has a difficulty level what do you usually play at?

I'm more interested in story than anything so I usually go normal/easy.

I go for the hardest difficulty when playing a story-driven game. I find the immersion greatly suffers for me if the big bad evil/empire is such a push over that my cat can beat it by me coaxing it to run across my controller now and again.

Sounds like fun. I learned and spent high school playing 3.5 and have recently adapted to playing Pathfinder for the reasons you describe. I am in the midst of working on a pirate or island-hopping oriented game with a really dark feel. I wish had more time.

Also, trying to get my friends to play my horror campaign and Call of Cthulhu. So much happiness. <3

I'm the same way. I'm not a power gamer.

To me, D&D is still first edition AD&D, though I do have the 3.5 books and had played once (as DM) using them. I've never tried Pathfinder, but it sounds good.

I ran Call of Cthulhu campaign a few years ago. Lots of fun indeed!

AD&D aaaah. We don't speak of it! Pathfinder is basically like 3.6 or something....Not 4th edition but an improvement on 3.5 which is still the favored version of my generation.

I wanted to do a World of Darkness campaign eventually, just haven't decided what yet.

I have officially started Infamous, will report progress.

I usually play the game at the hardest setting you can start off at.

Halo Reach was probably the hardest game I beat on that setting. Halo 4 was much easier on legendary then Halo Reach.

I usually play story on Normal first time then hardest difficulty the second time.

Halo Reach was balls difficult, I agree completely that Halo 4 on Legendary was much easier but I've only done that co-op. I am on and off doing Spartan Ops missions on various difficulties.

Hopefully tonight I am going to try the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod because it is open beta tonight.

What does everyone think of the rebooted Devil May Cry game concept? Yay or nay?

Looks good to me. I'm going to wait till t's get's way cheaper though.

Yeah I don't mind it, its gotten a ton of flack but I think it looks pretty neat. However, it isn't high priority on my purchasing list so I will wait until it drops in price. I have too much other stuff to play in the meantime.

I got my copy of Mass Effect 3 in the mail last Friday, and started a Fem Shep character that I had played in Mass Effect 2. I've gotten up to the Citadel, and am enjoying the game so far. The art is wonderful. They did a much better job with the Citadel, making it look less like a shopping mall as compared with Mass Effect 2.

eudaimonia,

I think the idea of the "shopping mall" feel in ME2 was because most of your time was spent in specific wards, and I feel that those wards were all about middle-class living on the Citadel, which involved lots of shopping. Still, I agree that it feels much better. There are so many satisfying moments in that game.
