Two sidelined after protesting altar call on ban on gay marriage | Cantor fired for comments against petition, organist quits in protest

By Maria Cramer, Globe Staff | October 27, 2005

At the pulpit of St. Gabriel Church in Brighton, an official from the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston was telling parishioners how to sign a petition to ban same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.

As he looked on, said Patrick Kilduff, the church's organist for 28 years, he grew angry that the archdiocese had chosen a Saturday Mass to make what he considered a political statement.

So before he was supposed to play the closing hymn of the Mass on Oct. 8 , Kilduff walked away from his organ in protest. His cantor, Colleen Bryant, stood in front of the congregation and told them that they did not have to sign the petition if they did not want to.

You know, some people just do not understand what being a Catholic means. These cafeteria Catholics really get on my nerves. You either follow Church teachings or you don't. If you don't why come to mass, they take the eurcharist in mortal sin and comit the worst sin imaginable. I remember when I professed the Catholic Faith two years ago, and I remember saying " I believe and profess all that the Holy Catholic Church teaches, believes, and professes to be true." They should just get with it. Homosexual marrige as well as abortion is an abomination to God. and If i offend anyone I'm not sorry. The Truth hurts sometimes.

Was the problem that the organist and cantor had that they actually supported homosexuality or that they felt the mass was being made too political and that people were being pressured to sign a political document as a loyalty test? I think it's very possible that both the organist and the cantor actually were against same-sex unions, but were upset about the way the petition was being presented. I could be wrong, though. :)

Regardless, if they had a problem, the proper thing to do would be to talk to the priest following the service or during the upcoming week. I admit priests can make mistakes, but there are better and worse ways of communicating about possible mistakes. As leaders, they have an added responsibility.

I am also assuming there is more to the story than what is reported and that those involved know more than we do.

I hope all of the folks who think that Catholic leadership in the US isn't doing enough to reaffirm and uphold Catholic teaching since Vatican II have a gander at this thread. Someone resigned as a result of and someone was else was fired for publically contradicting what the clergy was saying in this matter, that being that same sex marriage is wrong. This archdiocese, the bishop and the priests involved all need our prayers.

They should have been fired. No one should work at the Church and hold views contrary to the teachings of the Church.

Exactly my point. Except that they both weren't fired, one quit in protest of the firing.

But my point was for those who think that most of clergy in the US has no backbone. This shows backbone.

Who says their views are contrary to those of the Church? Maybe they just don't like the Church making political statements, which they're not supposed to do in the first place.

If you are Catholic, and you believe in a heresy, the penalty is excommunication. A heresy is something against Church doctrine. There are some common heresies in this day and age. The Roman Catholic Church doctrine states excommunication for heresy is automatic. It doesn't have to be pronounced by anyone. If you profess, or abet a heresy, you are excommunicated by Jesus from the body of His legitimate and legal Bride; The Roman Catholic Church. I am not going to list any heresies here, but you know if you are a heretic. If you receive The Eucharist in this state it is stealing Christ's Body and Blood.

Oh really? We're not supposed to do that in the first place? On who's authority, exactly?
