  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The "un-derailable" thread!

Lol my kitty enjoys doing "tricks" and being told what to do. She absolutely delights in being told to "jump" to a particular spot and fussed over a bit for doing it. She comes when called. The only things she is not thrilled about is being told to come inside (she tends to walk more slowly and every 10th or 20th time I must actually go get her) or being told to stand back when I am going out and she is not to come (she will verbally "yeeerrrrrr" at me to let me know she is not pleased). But she does it.

She is, however, the first cat like this I have had. I'm spoiled. This is the sort of pet I want from now on.

Oh, and if I can find a link, THIS is cool. Kitty agility. I may teach her some. She would DEFINITELY enjoy this.

I've wanted a kitty, but my dad would never be able to visit us if I had one. He is horribly allergic to cats. :( When cats are loving, they are awesome. I've seen both though! I have wanted a pet, but having a dog so soon after we lost our family dog seems to be hard to do. A cat seems like a good option, with the exception of what I mentioned above. She passed back in September, but it still seems pretty recent!

Gurney lives with 2 male cats---one orange, one tabby, and two female older cats---one tortoise shell and one grey....

Then there's the spritely hyper and zany Shih-Tzu 8- month-old puppy....wow is he and hand-full!! Mix a Shih-tzu with a Pug and a poodle and you have my Baxter. Crazy dog... Constant animal drama here at headquarters!!

Speaking of guard cats - I really like this one.

That one was on the news a while back, I swear Cats are tough.

A while back we had a terrible racoon problem, as our next door neighbors had them living under there house. Well it turns out one night I heard the racoons fighting with cats, I was worried for the cats, turns out the cats beat up the racoons :D

Cool!

And then there are those videos of cats chasing off bears. And alligators.

Cats are awesome.

I don't know if my cat would protect ME - she would probably run if someone strange came in. But if she thought her TERRITORY was being invaded (by another animal) she turns VICIOUS!

Oh, actually I remember - it was a bad scenario. My dog (German Shepherd - a metabolic issue actually caused a little brain trouble :( ) got confused because she caught a paw in the cat door, and she screamed - so he came after her, got her by the tail only, thank God - and I came running and got him off her - it was mass confusion. She didn't know WHO was hurting her, and she came at me. She had me scared to death - she was downright dangerous! She was going for eyes, and ran at my legs. Eight pounds, and she was WAY more dangerous than my 100 pound German Shepherd! That was some years ago. I hope she doesn't even remember. Yeah - cats are tough!

Lord have mercy!

I've always favored German Shepherds. Great dogs, but they have an EXTENDED "teenage" phase. I've pretty much wanted to kill every one I've ever owned at least several times.

I've read they can be difficult personality-wise. My sister likes them and has had a few. Hers were pretty settled, but I always saw them when they were older. And by "settled" I mean .... not having to be locked away to keep them from going totally nuts, LOL. They were still pretty active and funny.

Busy keeps away lonely though... ;)

My last dog, Cassie, was my favorite dog. Mutt. Sweetest, most quiet, obedient, loyal, loving. When she died, it shattered me to the core...

This will probably tickle some people and upset others, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity of bringing what someone posted in the Eschatology forum to your notice :p

Putin Takes the Throne?
Russian President Vladimir Putin was visiting Karyes, the administrative center of the Orthodox enclave of Mount Athos. The above photo, of Putin standing at an ancient throne alongside Greek officials and Orthodox dignitaries (as is the local custom for greeting visiting Orthodox heads of state on Mount Athos), was described by various Russian news outlets, both within the country and abroad, as Putin standing at a place which had until now been reserved only for Byzantine emperors.

Well I was at church today, talk about depressing, it seems we have four years to turn things around, and grow or else we are in deep doo-doo. The worst part the parish council president, and our priest seemed to be pretty much arguing for close to a hour over the same details, and points. I pray for our church because we are trying to be mission-minded, yet reaching out to bring people in, especially in a secular society like America is hard. I pray to GOD for guidance, and help in this area.

Is the parish renting a place? You can downsize. Other than through births and married couples remaining in the parish, I dont see any kind of missionary outreach working. People are just not into it.

Yes we are renting a place, we have gained more guests visiting, since moving to our new location. I try to remain optimistic that once people know about Orthodoxy they will convert, especially young people who will have children. I also hope those fleeing Mainline Protestantism, and post-vaticanII Catholicism will turn to Orthodoxy, yet I'm finding those folks aren't coming to any Church at all.

Putin is for sure thinking long-term, definitely not the short-term here and now. You had this picture of him on the throne along with Russia defending Orthodox in Ukraine, and Syria, and him hinting at liberating Constantinople over the tensions with the Turks, I think he will be seen as a important figure in not just Russian history, but Orthodox Christian history, and faith.

They can become such a part of our lives.

I don't think I'll ever have another dog like my German Shepherd Kai. He was my buddy - I used to take him everywhere with me. We had many happy hours trekking around lakes and woods and bluffs. He used to kind of play jokes on me sometimes - a dog with a sense of humor, LOL. He was incredibly loyal and protective and just a wonderful companion. He lived to be about 12 years old - his hips actually went out when he was younger, and back then there wasn't much to do. I thought I would have to put him down (and he actually wanted to give up that first day, but I wouldn't let him). I made a sling with a loop of strong fabric, passed it under his belly and lifted his back end for him. I'm not that strong in the arms, but you should have seen him - once he got used to it, we sometimes RAN down the street with me holding up the back end of a 110 pound dog. He never got perfect range of motion back, but all that exercise seemed to help. He was up on his own after some months, and lived for years after that with just a bit of stiffness and having to pull himself to get up. I loved that dog so much. He was beautiful too.

He lived until after my daughter was born, until she was about 6 months old. Otherwise, without a new baby, I am sure I would have taken it much harder to lose him. I've had a couple of dogs after him, but they didn't hold a candle, though Ryker was a pretty awesome puppy. Kai was once in a lifetime. He's been gone 20 years now, and I still kind of miss him.
