The Status of Secular Music Forum

Except for a few trolls, (which are not limited to non-Christians), how exactly would non-Christians be a detriment to the discussions of secular music? I'd really like to hear this.

The same way they would be a detriment to a forum about sex, for instance. What can they offer that can't already be found here? There is obviously a huge spectrum of musical tastes represented here.

BTW, in the suggestions forum Erwin said he would not make 2 separate secular music forums. That's why ps139 started this thread.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't equate the discussion of secular music with the discussion of sex. What moral standards or spiritual principles are being discussed, for example, in the "Battle of the Bands" thread, or the "U2 Fan" thread, or just about any other thread here? None.

How would statements like "I love that guitar intro...", or "My favorite 80's hit is...", or just about anything along those lines, (which make up the bulk of the posts in this secular music forum), have any difference in meaning if they were coming from a non-Christian?

I was going by what was posted in the past few threads. Ya'll wanna keep it "specifically for Xians" when it should be for everyone.

Why should it be for everyone...because you believe so? This is completely a preference issue, I can't see how there could be a true right or wrong.

I guess then that only people who have memorized the Bible can come to church.

This argument is fallacious on so many grounds that it isn't even worth evaluating. However, I believe you are referring to christians who enjoy fellowship with one another. I believe that Charles Spurgeon only allowed christians to attend his church services (and it should be noted that God used him for a great revival in England). Having separate times for evangelism and discipleship is not bad. If not, the message will either be meat to the infants or milk to the mature.

It's my job to come dangerousely close to lines. It ticks ppl off and makes them think for a moment. I appriciate that people agree with me sometimes when I say something. It shows they are using their brains instead of just doing what the church tells them to do and what not to do. Too often does a church mislead its people. I've seen it too many times to be able to put up with it. They follow blindly because if the pastor said it, it must be right..

I'm sorry Terrasin if the churches you have encountered have all resulted in negative experiences. However, using your brain rather than what is taught in scripture can be dangerous. Logic would say that Jesus is dead. The Holy Spirit tells me that He is very much alive!

And blackwasp, I was under the impression you were taking sides for a while with Fergy. Please let me know if I took that the wrong way.

I think Brettnolan summed up my stance well on that issue -- our responsibility as christians to judge other "christians". My main argument was against U2 being a christian band.

As I mentioned in my first post in this thread, it is my humble opinion and honest belief that sharing interests in different secular music can be a powerful tool to establish commonground, build trust and raport, and develope genuine relationships with non-Christians - difficult to attain in the other forums. For me, discussion of music is on the same par with discussion of food. Neither is intrusive or offensive to another's beliefs or world views. The discussions of secular music have a greater tendency to unite, not divide, Christians and non-Christians.

Since Erwin said he would not make two separate secular music forums, and since Christians and non-Christians alike enjoy a lot of the same music, I see no reason for Chiistians to be hoarding the discussions of secular music for Christians only. That seems a bit selfish.

There are a plethora of forums here for Christians to enjoy the fellowship of other Christians, exclusively. There are also plenty of opportunities for us to interact and be witnesses to the non-Christians in the open forums.

Frankly, Larry, most of the posts I've been making in this forum are specifically about the beliefs that secular music is sinful for a christian. Grover, I never said there were not any discussions of spiritual matters. I even pointed out a thread where the discussion was about people like you who do not 'approve' of secular music. Those discussions, however, are few and far between. They are the exception to the rule. By and large, most of the threads and posts in this secular music forum do not speak to those matters at all. And, just because you personally have spoken about the moral implications of secular music, does not change the vast and overwhelming nature of what is being discussed in this forum. Look for yourself. Except for those scant few threads you contributed in, do you see any other threads discussing the moral implications of secular music?

BTW, I was refering to what is going on in this forum, not what you personally posted here. That lump on your head is self-inflicted.

I don't remember reading this before, but this is a good point. Doesn't change my mind, but a good point nonetheless.

Don't forget that redjosh changed his vote to Christians-only, and I am still seeing both sides - I guess that's a firm "undecided". Here's my tally in light of that:

Christians only: 20
Move it: 24
Undecided: 5

That's pretty close IMHO.

Larry the best way to keep it as it is would be for me to not have started the poll in the first place. Complain to Erwin if you want, I'm sick of your whining. We do not even know whats going to happen, already you are attacking my honesty. I do not appreciate it, and its uncalled for.
