Universalists have always believed and taught the irresistible and eternal Love of God, such that all will be saved..
That's true.

They do not believe that everyone will be saved at the same time, however, and without undergoing something remedial, perhaps even a kind of hell, prior to being allowed into God's presence, AKA heaven, or however one envisions the condition of the saved in the afterlife.

I Love You Charlie (True WWII Story)

I’d like to tell you a true story about several Americans who “believed” in a German named Franz Stigler.

In the middle of WWII – Dec. 21st, 1943 a squadron of American bombers were over Germany. One of those B-17 bombers was piloted by 20 year old Charlie Brown. Charlie was on his first bombing mission piloting a plane known also as the “flying fortress” due to the on board machine guns and plexi-glass turrets that enabled the plane to defend itself from enemy fighters.

The allied planes were attacked by German fighter planes and there were many casualties. Charlie’s plane was severely damaged and literally shot from the sky. As it fell from sight, the German pilots must have gone on with the task destroying other bombers.

My friend : My world is the One who called me in His love & grace many moons ago. I have absolutely no worry regarding what the Glorious One does best with this wee dimension of this part of His creation. His Essence (described in Scripture) is completely up to the task of dealing with the fallen wrecks of of our species on this side and the other side of death!

God In Redemption


The closing verses of Romans 5 have been the standing perplexity of theologians.

Yet nowhere has the Holy Spirit written for our learning plainer conclusions, and never has tradition been blinder than in the treatment of this magnificent passage. Believe the passage as it stands, and the divine logic is irresistible.

It contains a comparison between the first and the last Adam. What the first Adam was, and is, to the whole human race, the last Adam is, and will be also, to the whole human race.

This is the simple and grand logic of verses 18 and 19.

"Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation, EVEN SO by the righteousness of One, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life." Then there follows a reiteration of the comparison with its Divine logic, so that the fact might be stated again, not only as a climax in the purpose of redemption, but as a future goal in the history of the working out of the redemption of all men. "For as by one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall the many be made righteous." The insertion of the definite article, which the Authorized Version unwarrantably leaves out before the word "many" in each case, emphasizes the fact for which it was originally placed there, viz.-- that the company of the righteous is identical in person and number with the company of the sinners to which the passage refers.

So that we have two phrases in these two verses, by which we can establish beyond question the identity of those under discussion.

These two phrases are "ALL MEN," and "THE MANY."

Of this company it is declared in the first place, that "all men" and "the many" were made sinners and come into condemnation; and in the second place, that "all men" and "the many" will be made righteous, not simply saved but made righteous. If this plain simple language-- and God could not have made it plainer-- does not mean what it says, but infers something quite the opposite, so that the comparison used is not a true one, then we may well pause to ask how ever it came about that on such a subject, and at such a climax in his argument, Paul did not tell us exactly what he meant.

If he meant that all men would be influenced by Adam's sin hopelessly and completely, but only some of the race would be affected actually by Christ's cross, here was the place to make this difference once and for all clear.

Instead, however, he uses universal terms, and logical comparisons, which, if the last suggestion is true, are not only bewildering but positively untrue, without the faintest hint to the contrary.

The apostle does more than this.

He introduces a vivid contrast. "But NOT AS the offence, SO ALSO is the free gift. For if through the offence of one the many be dead, much more the grace of God and the gift by grace. which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto the many." (Again the definite article should be placed where the Authorized Version has omitted it, before the word "many" in this verse). Let the reader note that the contrast here is in an absolutely opposite direction to the conclusions of ordinary theology. Most of us were taught that there was such a contrast between the effect of Adam's sin and Christ's righteousness that by the fall all were lost, and by the Cross some would be saved.

The contrast here in verse 15 is the antipodes (direct opposite) of this conclusion.

It is between the effect of the acts of the two Adams, and is such a contrast that the grace of God hath "MUCH MORE . . . ABOUNDED" in the Cross over the act of the first Adam. "If a human act was effectual for ruin, how much more shall a Divine act be effectual for salvation." The Apostle repeats this contrast later in the closing verse of the argument, when he sums up with the words, "where sin abounded grace did MUCH MORE ABOUND."

It is incomprehensible that such reckless language would have been chosen, if the Apostle did not mean just what the words declare; especially in the entire absence of any modifying or cautionary phrases. "The compound word here implies, 'not only abounding,' that is bursting forth round about; round about all ages, round about all nations, round about all sorts: but 'superabounding'-- that surrounding all those rounds, and with surplus and advantage over-flowing all: not only abounding grace, abounding unto all, to the whole world, but grace superabounding: that is, if there were other worlds, grace would bring salvation even unto them." The argument reveals the principle upon which God is working out His purpose with the human race. It declares that the principle upon which God is working to the redemption of all is the same principle by which the universal fall of man came about. Through one man's sin the whole race was involved surely and hopelessly. Only a traitor to His person and character would deny such a God this certainty."

Dear friend: A new day breaks across our planet: already 1/2 over "down under". I have being contemplating the wonderful words of Jesus Christ, mentioned in your post. I will make no further comment on them, but let them speak to our beings ONLY.

When Jesus finished placing this charge before his twelve disciples, he went on to teach and preach in their villages.

John, meanwhile, had been locked up in prison. When he got wind of what Jesus was doing, he sent his own disciples to ask, "Are you the One we've been expecting, or are we still waiting?"

Jesus told them, "Go back and tell John what's going on: The blind see, The lame walk, Lepers are cleansed, The deaf hear, The dead are raised, The wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side.

"Is this what you were expecting? Then count yourselves most blessed!"

When John's disciples left to report, Jesus started talking to the crowd about John. "What did you expect when you went out to see him in the wild? A weekend camper? Hardly. What then? A sheik in silk pajamas? Not in the wilderness, not by a long shot. What then? A prophet? That's right, a prophet! Probably the best prophet you'll ever hear.

He is the prophet that Malachi announced when he wrote, 'I'm sending my prophet ahead of you, to make the road smooth for you.' "Let me tell you what's going on here: No one in history surpasses John the Baptizer; but in the kingdom he prepared you for, the lowliest person is ahead of him.

For a long time now people have tried to force themselves into God's kingdom. But if you read the books of the Prophets and God's Law closely, you will see them culminate in John, teaming up with him in preparing the way for the Messiah of the kingdom.

Looked at in this way, John is the 'Elijah' you've all been expecting to arrive and introduce the Messiah.

"Are you listening to me? Really listening?

"How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, 'We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.'

John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a lush, a friend of the riff-raff. Opinion polls don't count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating."

Next Jesus let fly on the cities where he had worked the hardest but whose people had responded the least, shrugging their shoulders and going their own way.

"Doom to you, Chorazin! Doom, Bethsaida! If Tyre and Sidon had seen half of the powerful miracles you have seen, they would have been on their knees in a minute. At Judgment Day they'll get off easy compared to you.

And Capernaum! With all your peacock strutting, you are going to end up in the abyss. If the people of Sodom had had your chances, the city would still be around. At Judgment Day they'll get off easy compared to you."

Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly. "The Father has given me all these things to do and say. This is a unique Father-Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge.

No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does. But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen.

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

'Nonsense"; Does it mean that he saves others “without” believing?
Who is the Saviour of all men - This must be understood as denoting that he is the Saviour of all people in some sense which differs from what is immediately affirmed - “especially of those that believe.”
There is something pertaining to “them” in regard to salvation which does not pertain to “all men.” It cannot mean that he brings all people to heaven, “especially” those who believe - for this would be nonsense.
And if he brings all people actually to heaven, how can it be “especially” true that he does this in regard to those who believe? Does it mean that he saves others “without” believing?

But this would be contrary to the uniform doctrine of the Scriptures

Specially of those that believe - This is evidently designed to limit the previous remark. If it had been left there, it might have been inferred that he would “actually save” all people. But the apostle held no such doctrine, and he here teaches that salvation is “actually” limited to those who believe. [BARNES]

It may be asked how it can be just in God to condemn men forever for not believing the gospel? I answer:

1. God has a right to appoint his own terms of mercy.

2. Man has no claim on him for heaven.

3. The sinner rejects the terms of salvation, knowingly, deliberately, and perseveringly.

4. He has a special disregard and contempt for the gospel.

5. His unbelief is produced by the love of sin.

6. He shows by this that he has no love for God, and his law, and for eternity.

7. He slights the objects dearest to God and most like him; and,

8. He must be miserable.

A creature who has no confidence in God; who does not believe that he is true or worthy of his regard, and who never seeks his favor, must be wretched. He rejects God, and he must go into eternity without a Father and without a God. He has no source of comfort in himself, and must die for ever. [BARNES]

How is it that God's warning, "...for in the day you eat thereof, you shall surely die," has, by strange inference, effectively morphed into "...for in the day you eat thereof you will start down the path toward everlasting damnation?" (As an aside, the more accurately translated Hebrew has the original statement as "...for in the day you eat thereof, dying you shall die.")

How is it that somehow the wages of sin has been supersized from being death to being abandoned to a tortured "Christless eternity?" (Among imbecilic phrases, that's one that's got to rank high, since without Christ, there can be no eternity.) Scripture is clear: Sin's consequence is simply death. Now be careful, reader; it's death, not annihilation, not cessation of existence. Probably the summary go-to Bible-explanation of what death is, is found in Romans eight where Paul explains that creation is suffering from its "bondage to decay," groaning in travail for "the revealing of the sons of God." Creation, as J. B. Phillips paraphrases it, is on "tip toe" awaiting that triggering moment when the children of God "come into their own,", i.e., the liberty of their glory, taking all creation with them.

Words like "Perish(ing);" "lost;" "decay" are three of the descriptions of the effect of death.

Yet millions of professing Christians, when they come across those words in their Bibles, rather than reading what's there, they read "hell," eternal damnation and torment. Death, as the consequence of the entrance of sin into the world, causes rot. Death is soul-rot and body-consumption. It burdens our spirits, like a heavy blanket laid over us, with all that is alien to us as God's children. It is the dissolution of our creaturehood. It is the pathetic fraying of the fabric of our humanity. It is malevolence, dis-ease, and distortion of being, in contrast to God's gospel message of goodness, ease, and well-being in Christ.....

Death? Yes; Hell? No
